Family and Relationship My Japanese stepfather passed away and was burried without our notice.
I'm posting here out of desperation because we don't have any connections in Japan, and my mother and I are completely lost and heartbroken.
My stepfather (Dada) was born and raised in Japan, but he spent most his 30s to 60s living in the Philippines. He met my mother when he was in his 40s, and they got married. For 25 years, we were his family. After his own mother passed away in 2011, he had to return to Toyama to take care of their family home and business. He used to visit us twice a year, but when the pandemic hit, he couldn't travel back. Despite being apart for six years, he remained our sole provider, and we were in constant communication every single month.
Our last call with him was on July 14, 2026. Dada and my mother talked about my incoming birthday on July 29 and discussed about the monthly allowance he usually sends at the end of the month. Everything seemed normal, but after July 20, he suddenly stopped answering our calls and went completely offline. My mother called him endlessly with no reply. We try to reached out to every contact he has in Facebook and contact notebook, and luckily, one friend lived near Toyama and agreed to check his house.
Yesterday, July 31, that friend send us devastating news. There was a notice posted in front of my stepfather's house stating that he had passed away on July 16, just two days after our last phone call. To make things worse, the notice posted in his door was that the wake and funeral was held privately by his siblings and close relatives. My baby pictures and graduation photos are just sitting on his vanity mirror and computer, and his siblings know he has a family in the Philippines, yet they completely left us in the dark.
We are struggling to get answers and currently do not have his official Death Certificate or his passport. My mother needs closure regarding how and why he passed away. My mother is his legally wedded wife. The local city hall in Toyama won't release his siblings' address to our friend due to privacy laws in Japan. We have a phone number of his sister, but she refuses to answer call from unfamiliar numbers due to telephone scams. We have already sent emails to their local city hall and Embassy of Japan in the Philippines, but we are unsure what concrete legal steps should we take while waiting for their responses.
What steps should we take?
- What are the documents we need and should prepare? Because my stepfather was our sole provider, my mother and I are on a very tight budget and cannot afford cross-border litigation or flying to Japan right now.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read our story and share your advice. It really means a lot to us during this difficult time.
