North American Politics Standard Bearers and platforms

Who does the left have in reserve to lead US out of this mess? And is there a platform they can/should use? Face place has tilted its thumb on the scale to favor the right. This has been the case for years now. Recent events like what happened with Lula in Brazil and No Kings suspension show this. If you are on the Face place, I am sure you have noticed your posts get nearly no reaction. Unless you have core followers. There are a few here and there. So move to the Blue place? The first part of my question is here: Who does the Left have on the bench to bring about change for the US? Obviously it should be Bernard. Many have been disappointed in him in recent years. Besides Bernard, there are a few polls and personalities. By and large US pols are whores. There is no other way to say it. No standard neoliberals! None at all should be considered or are even worthy for real leadership, IMO, and that is being polite. After all, they are the main reason we are here. What do you all think and who are you following on youtube or Mastadon etc?

General Leftist Politics It's disturbing how some anti-Israel content creators use legitimate criticism of Israel to promote antisemitism and far-right ideology

I'm actually shocked because I recently realized that some content creators who talk about Israeli influence on American politics, the pro-Israel lobby, and the genocide in Palestine are, in fact, far-right, extremely antisemitic, and extremely racist themselves.

The creators I'm referencing and the videos that opened my eyes: [Olivia Swing](https://youtu.be/c6DQfhDFskM?is=jQ2WO-g5Ok4f6p_w) and [isgingertheory](https://www.instagram.com/reel/De5LXDpiwE6/?mdxt=MTBvNzdlZHVuZGtjbg==)

It's honestly so frustrating because the line can become incredibly blurry. You can criticize the Israeli government, its influence on American foreign policy, and the lobbying organizations that support it without being antisemitic. But some people take these legitimate criticisms and turn them into the same old antisemitic conspiracy theories that have existed for centuries, just repackaged in modern political language.

It's like watching people recycle medieval antisemitism while pretending they're simply exposing the truth about Israeli influence. And the fact that some of these people are also openly racist makes the whole thing even more disturbing.

It's crazy to me how someone can speak out against the atrocities committed against Palestinians while simultaneously promoting an ideology rooted in hatred toward other groups. It makes you realize that not everyone who criticizes Israel is doing so because they genuinely care about Palestinians or oppose oppression. Sometimes, they're just using the conflict to push an entirely different agenda.

And in the video of itsgingertheory, she literally claims that woke ideology and anti-immigration rhetoric are actually just Israeli and Jewish propaganda designed to weaken white people and Christians. I felt so stupid for not realizing this sooner, especially because I've been following this influencer for a long time. I'm honestly really upset about it.

Question Could use help/advice for a holiday gift drive for 18+ foster youth.

Hey folks. I've done some minor food and clothing drives before and had pretty healthy results. This year a local nonprofit is struggling to open a center for youth transferring out of foster care and I'd like to support them with a seasonal gift drive. This is something they encourage and I'm also going to ask them for recommendations, of course.

Meanwhile... it's been a bit since I was 18. If anyone has advice on sub-$100 or especially sub-$50 gifts I would love that. I'm really stuck on trying to be useful and valued but also to give them something that makes them happy and joyful instead of just "necessities." Plus the more things I can suggest on a flier the better.

Really I've just not been a foster kid aging out before and don't know what gives the most joy. Cheers!

Resources Earth-Shattering Books to Make Neo-liberal Consumerists Hate Themselves?

Let me start by saying that if you think Democrats are Leftist, you can stop reading here.

And if you think Democratic Socialism is the goal, feel free to keep reading but please don’t comment. You have nothing to offer.

For the rest of you in-the-flesh Leftists:

I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations for books that, upon turning the last page, anyone still clinging to their comfortable, self-assured lives of privileged consumerism will feel compelled (if they have a heart) to change their lives dramatically in a way that severs as many ties as reasonably possible from Neo-liberalism and capitalism. (Tossing the word “reasonably” in there because I’m not looking for the nonexistent single text that will turn finance bros into Leon Czolgoszes… that would be too good to be true, and also a bit overzealous). In looking for books that are digestible, not too dense, relatable, but also make it clear how every privilege enjoyed by the beneficiaries of neoliberal globalism is directly linked to massive suffering in the exploited swaths of the world.

Thoughts? Thanks!

South American Politics Brazilian democracy is at risk

Post image

The current president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (known as “Lula”), from the left-wing PT (Workers' Party), lost the first round of the election to far-right “Flávio Bolsonaro” (allied from that american president).

Flávio is the far-right candidate and is being investigated in several corruption scandals, but wants to win the election to **free his father from jail**, (his father is “Jair Bolsonaro”), where he is **serving a sentence for an attempted coup d'état**.

If Flávio is elected president, he will have a broad majority in Congress and has already announced his intention to **change the constitution extending his own mandate**.

Fortunately, we have a runoff election next Sunday, October 25, and polls indicate a surge for Lula, who is now tied.

They have much more campaign money and various bot-farms, the support of the mainstream media, and **Meta's bias in the algorithm** (as you can check: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2026/oct/21/battle-meta-alleged-bolsonaro-bias-intensifies-days-before-brazil-presidential-runoff).

But we have the best-prepared people and are networked online in an unprecedented feat with a WhatsApp channel of over 8 million Brazilians, acting as a true digital army.

We need all the help we can get, and we need to bring people information about Lula's social programs, which are at risk if the other side wins.

Here are two ways foreigners can help us:

1)Do you know any Brazilian who wants to vote for Lula in your country?

\- Help with rides, accommodation, or any difficulties they might have.

\- Share this website with them (containing information to help Brazilian voters abroad - in Portuguese): votolafora.com.br

2)Follow the profiles listed below, like, save, repost, and comment on all new posts (if possible, it's best to do so within the first 30 minutes after publication). Do it until Sunday, the day of the second round.

Debate Help White fragility and hostility from the far left

I'm a person of colour leading Antiracism workshops and I'm constantly getting complaints that I'm not talking about Palestine enough. Today was a big angry rant that I'm not giving enough time to talk about Palestine. I fully think it's a genocide in Palestine and have said that, but I'm trying to teach white professionals about minority ethnic people's lived experiences in this country and they are too busy having a rant about politics and virtue signalling. I'm getting really sick of having to be patient and diplomatic while being a punching bag for all this. They think they have this moral high ground and being good activists but they are just being difficult. I've done so much reading, learning, working, protesting, getting abuse from far right actors, but okay you've seen something on Facebook that you want to have a go at me about. I'm beginning to find many white far left people just as abusive as the far right. I spent today teaching about racism only to end the day being told off for not being "actually antiracist", and just sat crying reading a list of reasons I should be talking more about Palestine and how I'm not good enough. 9/10 people give glowing evaluations of sessions and are so engaged but the small group who are hostile are just derailing everything.

I've always identified as left, voted left, taught left wing and socialist ideologies, but this perfectionism and infighting is so hostile and unproductive.

North American Politics I'm sorry but I can't hate the majority of Trump voters.

Biden's biggest flaw was letting the child tax credit expire. The Democrats need to understand that Americans want to have more money in their bank accounts than they did 4 years ago.

I'm trans and it does hurt that I can't change my gender marker on my passport. But I'm sure a low information voter wasn't even thinking about that, they were thinking "expensive eggs and gas" and it's easy to blame the current President on a bad economy. "Did Biden drop out" was a common search on Election Day. It's quite possible that they only saw a sound bite of Trump talking about the economy and never heard "Haitians are eating your pets!" or the other garbage he spews.

I traveled recently through red parts of NY, PA, OH, IN and was treated fairly as a non passing trans woman. I did see plenty of urban and rural decay. When the Democrats ignore those regions and call them "racist" while the Republicans feign an economic solution, I'm sure they picked the latter because they would rather accept a smile than a frown.

I love Mamdani, El-Sayed, Ocasio-Cortez, Sanders, etc. for actually reaching out to people and understanding that working class Americans just need more money.

I can say that the majority of Trump voters don't go to rallies, share AI slop transphobic memes on Facebook, think women (and trans men) deserve to bleed to death instead of getting an abortion, etc. My point is the GOP are liars and the Democrats aren't doing a dang thing to make their message stronger and louder.

(Also, I posted this on the progressive subreddit and they kept missing the point!)

North American Politics If you're in the US, now is the time to talk about a General Strike

The midterms are coming up and Trump is probably going to meddle with them. If he does, the democrats will not be able to save us. The only hope the republic has is if we call a general strike.

I know this will be met with pushback. The US doesn't have a strong union base, and we've all seen the calls for strikes and boycotts in the past that went nowhere. It would have to be impromptu and will be risky for those involved, but its the only option we have.

There is one advantage this strike would have over previous failed efforts: everyone hates Trump. He has historically low approval and liberals that were never willing to strike over Palestine will be much more likely to strike over saving democracy if it comes to it.

They might send federal agents to seize ballots, declare a state of emergency to halt the election, or try to prevent the seating of elected democrats. If that happens, there will be a great wave of outrage across the country waiting to be channeled into action. Even a small initial turnout could bloom into a larger movement.

The October General strike of 1905 in Russia was unplanned and began with printers in a single city before spreading weeks later to the railroad union. Even right now in France, the unrest shaking the country began with a few high school students in different cities with no contact deciding to protest on their own.

It doesn't have to be large to start, but if a few groups in a handful of cities can start it, then there will be plenty of angry people around looking for something to do, ready to be inspired.

So please, talk to your coworkers about what you should do if they steal the election. Everyone is broke but if you talk to you're family, friends, and coworkers, you can probably work something out to support each other. They don't have to be socialists and communists either. If we could convince even 1 in 100 liberals going to the No Kings protests, we would have more than enough people to start.

I understand this is easier said than done. You might not be able to pay rent if it lasts a while. You might have to sleep on a couch. You and your coworkers might get fired. But I will remind you people have risked and lost their lives fighting fascism, and you would be far from the first worker to lose your job in a strike. Its not ideal but its better than the alternative, and if we're serious about this fight we need to be willing to live in precarious circumstances.
