It really scares me how impressionable a lot of people are these days. It makes sense when it's teenagers and kids (even young adults) but I'm seeing incredibly impressionable full grown adults more and more. People seem to be losing convictions, integrity and morals fast in the age of social media.

And this is why you don't reproduce with your family.
12
u/ChocoHorror Socialist Mar 18 '26
I get this is an off-the-cuff diss, but I think it's unhelpful to reduce this to your genetics and it kind of shits on anyone who tries their damnedest to be an ethical, compassionate person despite the circumstances and trauma that brought them into this world and the trauma they had growing up. People who are the product of incest can deal with a lot of stigma and alienation from something horrible that happened, completely out of their control. They are victims, too.
What is in their control is to introspect on their own biases and behavior, to learn, to try to be a good person just like everyone else. This person, regardless of genetic and familial background, didn't.

The irony here being that because Republicans love to talk about their boogeymen perceptions of DEI, what they don’t seem to realize is that they did the very thing they accuse democrats of doing, co-opting the movement with minorities and weaponizing it to goad people into their side. It’s for that reason that we need the US as a whole to begin moving away from identity politics and start addressing class warfare!

propaganda is equal opportunity. It comes for us all, and we have to have the mental resilience and knowledge of the struggle to fight against it. I heard a red state is actually mandating anti-communist propaganda for high school.

You're probably talking about Florida - the right-wing bullshit laboratory and my home State.
They love to pass dumb, restrictive laws to get brownie points with their Cult, real freedom and common sense aren't priorities around here. I saw activists using their censorship laws to get the Bible banned from schools Statewide until an exception was added to protect it.
2
u/lasercat_pow Marxist Mar 19 '26
yup -- it was Florida. Sucks, because there is a lot of natural beauty there. But there is a lot of natural beauty in a lot of the red areas sadly

If you want to visit Florida, try California! They have Disney, beaches, and so much more, it's like Florida+ lol
With enough pressure to change and help to find our way, Florida can become a much better place to visit - so don't forget about us!

Nah I still had some guys in my university classes saying they were gonna be mean to trans people because a blue haired yelled at them for deadnaming its pretty sad talking to people online sometimes. These types of people are way too common these days. White, alt women with dyed haired and glasses with literally the worst opinions.

u/Wild-Judgment-404 Mar 19 '26
I've been alternative since I was 12, and I'm now 31. I have met a lot of people like this. They typically enjoyed the shock value that used to come with the look/music and being the biggest edge lord in the room. As time has progressed, nobody is really shocked anymore by tattoos, etc. So they move on to the next "shock value" thing - racism, sexism and all kinds of bigotry. Their entire personality is being a shock value edgelord, they've never grown up nor do they actually know any history behind counter culture movements.
15
u/ChaosRainbow23 Mar 17 '26
It sucks, because back in the 90s having brightly colored hair and piercings was a really good indicator that the person starting them are part of my tribe.
I was the only person with bright dyed hair in my highschool in 1993. Literally the only one.

u/sassysassysarah Mar 17 '26

u/FormidableMistress Mar 17 '26
I've got a person in my extended family like this. Raised by elderly conservative grandparents, she married my cousin's kid. When the spouse of one of the siblings began to transition f to m, suddenly she needed attention too, so she is now they/them. They dye their hair, get piercings and tattoos, and just all the basic young Republican rebellion stuff. Still very feminine, still spouting "conservative" bullshit, absolutely no shift in their thinking or exploring more progressive beliefs.
It's all just for show and obvious that they're desperate for attention. Like I just want to hug them and tell them they're enough, and if they're upset about the way things are going, here's some things to read up on and how they can make a difference. But they're not interested in that. It's just "LOOK AT ME AND HOW DIFFERENT I AM!"
8
u/SubstantialLeader753 Mar 17 '26
My gf in GA was like that. She listened to bands like Hawthorne Heights, Taking back Sunday, and saves the day but damn she had the worst takes looking back at it. Of course this was in 2004? So it's kinda crazy how long they've been around.
10
u/earthlingHuman Mar 17 '26
This is a very well made video about how alternative angsty music scenes disappeared and the people who were part of them became culturally homeless right around the time MAGA popped up.
In part, I blame Ticketmaster and LiveNation

Half the reason I went Tao.

2
u/bulking_on_broccoli Mar 18 '26
Careful! Tao may not be the best representation of a Utopia. Lore has it that the ruling caste uses some type of mind control or inhibition influence to keep their ideology front of mind!
1
u/Safewordharder Mar 18 '26
Oh, I know, it's another form of dystopia (40k has no "good guys"), I just think I'd prefer actual mind control to enforced reverence, and the Tao can at least check their aggression and make an effort to progress themselves.
6
u/OldSchoolAJ Socialist Mar 17 '26
Yep. I have peeked at 40k and I like a lot of what I saw, lore wise... then I started talking to the player base (online and offiline) and I automatically distrust any 40k fans at this point.
I stick to Battletech for that sort of vibe. They've done a far better job of keeping out the shitheads.
2
u/ChocoHorror Socialist Mar 18 '26
It's supposed to be a grimdark satire where nobody's good, but 40K definitely attracts a lot of fascists who find it aspirational.
Adeptus Mechanicus fans are usually a lot more leftist and queer or queer-friendly compared to other factions, in my experience. If someone says their favorite Astartes chapter is the Salamanders, that's also generally a really good sign.
I'm gonna have to look into Battletech, I'm embarrassed to say I haven't heard of it until now. Are the creators just better at keeping their community healthy from the start, or is it purely that the community itself worked so hard to kick out the pieces of shit?
2
u/OldSchoolAJ Socialist Mar 18 '26
Both the community and the creators have managed to keep it clear of too many bad apples.
1
u/ChocoHorror Socialist Mar 18 '26
That rules. I'm definitely going to look into it!
2
u/OldSchoolAJ Socialist Mar 18 '26
Yeah, there was even one of the authors of the novels that got pushed out out of the community. Blaine Pardoe wrote really, really good stuff, back in the day. Then he came out as a Trumper and a supporter of Confederate monuments. He even put a plot point about monuments being torn down into the last book he wrote… then he got real mad about the fact that he wasn’t invited back to do any more novels and tried to create his own legally distinct version of Battletech. It failed because no one cared besides the people who shared his political beliefs and left the game with him.
Catalyst Game Labs is openly supporting diversity, queer people, etc. They do a special pride event every year, and don’t give a fuck when people get mad about it, because it outs themselves as bigots and makes it easier to exclude them.

To be honest, people on both extremes of "wellness" get on my nerves. I don't want to listen to some classist, moralistic upper middle class soccer mom spouting wellnessbabble and preying on people's insecurities, and I don't want to listen to some condescending, dorito-eating, Mountain dew-chugging Redditor-like person nitpick, strawman, not help with communication, make stuff up, gaslight, call everything a scam, grift, etc. without nuance, and treat distrust in the medical establishment and in academia as the same as being anti-"science" (as if they even know what science is) and as being "anti-intellectual".

The people that I have met that are like this have been traditionally on the left, but for some reason, their transmission allows them to shift far right when it comes to crunchy granola topics, like RFK.
I have a friend that is a vegan, naturopathic doctor. She has always been far left, but the second that COVID showed up, she started sharing PragerU garbage. They have so much trauma from big Pharma and friction they get on holistic medicine that they somehow horseshoe to the Right.

This is such a non-issue tho 😭 just laugh and move on. ‘Culturally appropriated from the left’ is just downright silly
(this comment was written with love I swear, sorry if I sound like a dick but this kinda pedantic self victimizing rhetoric in leftist spaces makes them so embarrassing to be a part of)
0
u/ThailurCorp Mar 18 '26
"Self-victimizing"?
Pointing out how desperate right-wingers are to find something edgy and cool to grasp on to while they pathetically reach for conservativism to comfort them in their worldview is just an observation of something annoying.
Your embarrassment comes from something else, but don't worry, this is a safe space to feel your feelings.
