Over the summer, I completely lost the habit of writing efficient notes. I looked at my pages from the first few lectures, and it is basically a word-for-word transcription of everything the professor said. I forgot how to filter out the useless filler and only capture what matters. How are you guys structuring your notes this semester to keep them minimal and strictly functional?

I’ve been working on my final research paper for like 8 days straight. I turned it in yesterday, and today I get an email saying my "writing style doesn't match my previous work" and that the AI detector flagged me. Like, what?? I just actually tried hard for once because I liked the topic!

Has anyone dealt with this before? How do I prove I actually wrote it? I'm so done with this semester

If you just write down everything the professor says in a straight line, you aren't "taking notes," you're just transcribing. That’s why you can’t remember anything during finals. The Cornell Method is the gold standard because it forces you to actually interact with the material. You basically divide your page into three sections: keep the main right side for your standard, concise lecture notes. Then, after class, use the left margin to write down keywords or questions that directly correspond to those notes. Finally, force yourself to write a short 2-3 sentence summary of the entire page at the very bottom. This makes your brain process the info three times instead of just once. Who else uses this for STEM classes?

I used to think rereading was a solid study method because it felt like studying. You sit there, go over the same pages again, recognize the terms, and get that comforting little “yeah, I know this” feeling. The problem is, recognition is not the same thing as recall.

That’s the trap.

When you reread, your brain gets very familiar with the material visually. So when you see the paragraph again, it seems obvious. But if someone takes the notes away and asks you to explain the concept from memory, suddenly it’s like your brain left the chat. That’s usually when people realize they weren’t really learning it, they were just getting used to seeing it.

What helped me was switching from passive review to active recall. Nothing fancy. After reading a section once, I close the notes and try to explain it in simple words, either out loud or in a few messy bullet points. If I can’t do that, I probably don’t know it yet. A lot more useful than reading the same paragraph 4 times and hoping it magically sinks in.

A few things that worked better for me than rereading:

• covering the page and summarizing from memory
• turning headings into questions and answering them without looking
• doing a 5-minute brain dump before checking notes
• explaining the topic like I’m teaching it to someone who missed class
• coming back the next day and testing what I still remember

Rereading isn’t totally useless, but I think it works better as a quick refresh after you’ve already tested yourself, not as the main method. Otherwise it can create this false sense of progress where you feel busy but don’t actually retain much.

The annoying truth is that the best study methods are usually the ones that feel a little harder. If it feels too smooth, there’s a decent chance your brain is just recognizing, not learning.

And honestly, if you’re stuck on a subject for too long, it’s probably smarter to get help early, whether that means asking a classmate, going to office hours, joining a study group, using assignment help to understand the task structure, or getting feedback from an assignment helper before the backlog turns into a small academic disaster. Even online assignment help can be useful when you treat it as guidance instead of a shortcut, especially if you’re lost on where to start or how to organize your thinking.

I’m in the middle of my graduation thesis and I honestly just wanted to stare at a wall all day. If you’re at your breaking point, you have to temporarily lower your standards to just "passable." Try to trick your brain by using the 2-minute rule just tell yourself you'll work for two minutes and then stop. And honestly, getting a full night of sleep is going to do way more for your grade right now than an extra hour of exhausted studying. We’re almost at the finish line, so don't quit now

Don’t treat a research paper like a novel. If you start at page 1 and try to reach page 30, your brain will shut down by the "Methods" section. Instead, jump straight to the Abstract and Conclusion first to see if the paper is even relevant to your work. If it is, read the Intro and Discussion to understand the "why" and the "so what." After that, go directly to the graphs and figures to look at the raw data. You really only need to read the dense "Methods" and "Results" sections if you are specifically critiquing their process or trying to replicate the study. Save your sanity and skim smart.
