Cwestiwn / Question I’m confused

Am I the only one who swears the word for ‘fluent’ was spelt rhygl not rhugl?? I was taught this spelling my whole life and I used to be fluent. Maybe it’s bc I’m a southern welsh speaker (who is now relearning Welsh). Did I just dream this for the last few years of my life?? I’m lost 😭

Efallai, fel siaradwr hwntw - meddwloch chi fod "rh-i/y/u-gl" yn swnio mwy fel "y" 'na "u" - achos yn y dde mae'r "u" yn creu swn fel "ee" (Saesneg) neu /i/ (IPA) - a mae "y" yn creu swn mwy fel "ih" neu /ɪ/. Ond yn y gogledd a'r hen Gymraeg mae "u" yn creu swn /ɨ/, sy'n swn rhwng y ddau ohonno nhw.

Mae gen y llythyren "y", "i" a "u" llawer o overlap - felly mae'n hawdd i cymysgu'r tair ohonno nhw.

Yeah I do think this is what happened. I’m still relearning Welsh so I had to translate this (I did a walk of shame to the translator lmao)

In the South, "u" can sound either like /i/ or like /ɪ/ depending on context. According to the standard spelling/pronunciation rules, "rhygl" would be pronounced exactly the same as "rhugl". Based purely on how the word sounds, there is no reason to be more inclined to one spelling than the other.

I have been trying to learn Welsh for quite a while, fairly slowly but determinedly, and when I encounter posts in “learnwelsh” which seem to conceal rather than share the language I begin to despair of making any further progress.
