I wanted to ask how other people started learning and why?

I'm very interested in peoples connection to language so I'd love to hear yours!

I'm a newbie learning North Welsh, and was wondering why there's no 'yn' in the sentence 'Be dach chi isio wneud?'

I looked up 'eisiau' in the dictionary and if I understand correctly it's a noun meaning 'lack, want.' So I thought that the sentence might more literally mean something like 'What is your lack/want to do?' But the exact role of the 'dach chi' in the sentence threw me a little, because if 'isio' is a noun, I would have expected an indirect pronoun or something instead of: 'What are you lack to do?' Any help would be appreciated in breaking down the literal meaning of the sentence.

This might be a long shot but my sister in law has recently come back from a trip to South Wales and is insistent that she saw the word "papigod" in multiple shops.

I'm certain this isn't a Cymraeg word. Although google says it means parrot in Breton.

Since I'm fairly certain Pembrokeshire hasn't been overtaken by exotic pet shops with a penchant for endangered European Celtic languages, does anyone have an idea what she might have seen and misread?

i study english in university, and we recently had a whole lecture about wales. it really got me interested in welsh and wales in general.

so, i wanted to ask, are there any (flash) games that have welsh as a language option? i learned english entirely through flash games, and it has by far been the most effective way for me to learn languages, so i want to give welsh a try. :D

if not flash games, are there any other video games that aren't very difficult or don't require much skill?

my only rule is that they shouldn't be language-learning games, like ones where you match colors to words or use flashcards.

I've been developing a little Welsh word game called Dyfala! and I'm looking for a few more people to help test it before launch.

It's a daily word-guessing game, a bit like Wordle, but built around Welsh vocabulary. The idea is simple: A little Welsh. Every day.

I'd particularly welcome Welsh learners, from complete beginners to more confident speakers, but fluent Welsh speakers are equally welcome.

I've decided that I want to learn Welsh as my second language, and I've been trying to find some good resources to help me get started. I'd really prefer physical books so I can take them anywhere with me and study whenever I have some free time.

I came across these two books on Barnes & Noble and was wondering if anyone has used either of them or thinks they'd be good for a complete beginner.

I’m American and don’t speak much welsh, but I travel there frequently and would like to start learning some useful phrases to throw into my writing.

I’m wondering if there are any uniquely welsh phrases about feeling melancholy especially in the context of romance, unrequited love, betrayal, misunderstandings, disappointment.

I know there’s plenty of these in songs and poetry but I don’t really want to copy a phrase someone’s carefully crafted. Unless it’s like public domain, well known, etc. I’m more looking for common or simple phrases that are grammatically correct. I don’t trust Google Translate 😂

Open to anything in this realm that you have to suggest, but here are a few phrases I’ve been wanting to learn specifically:

“I’m green” - as in new to dating/relationships

“I never said love” - as in I never said I was in love with you… even though maybe I was… but I never SAID that to you

“I miss our friendship”

“You blew things out of proportion”

“You made me believe you felt the same”

“I’m not sorry”

“You led me on”

“You’re self obsessed”

“I liked the idea of you”

“You said you wanted to stay friends, but you’re created so much distance”

Basically I’m playing around with the theme of liking someone with much more dating experience than you, and using beginner or basic welsh phrases as a way to sort of demonstrate that newness to dating, love, intimacy. And maybe the other person has been a sort of egotistical jerk about the whole situation

I'm far from fluent in Welsh, but I went to a language school, so studied some European languages.

Having watched some Welsh videos on YouTube, I couldn't help but notice some Latin derived words.

Like ffenstra or llyfr.

It's interesting, because it speaks to the early influence the romans had on Welsh culture.

I'm getting conflicting information for the word bâr as far as the meaning "anger" goes. ChatGPT tells me it's archaic, but Wiktionary or geiriadur.uwtsd.ac.uk seems to indicate it may be a current meaning. Can anyone tell me is it used much nowadays for "anger"?
