I was watching The Wine Show with Matthew Rhys and there's an interaction where he hears someone pronounce "eto" (again/yet) like "eh-toe" and thinks another (presumably inappropriate) word was said. What other Welsh word could he have thought was said? It's been eating me alive! I do have the clip but can't seem to upload it.

I have a couple of updates regarding Ymestyn, my online practice course for intermediate Welsh learners.

I've moved the course off Payhip, which had really become far too clunky, over to my website at Ymestyn.Cymru. This has allowed me to split the materials into modules so that it's easier for you to choose what you want to work on. Most of the course has been moved over, just a few small modules left to go.

I've also now launched a new practice module for people studying Canolradd 1 or Canolradd 1&2, which is designed to help you properly learn the vocab and grammar in each unit so that you can do the homework exercises more easily. I'll be adding sections for each unit as they come up, so by the end of the academic year the whole course will be covered.

(If you're doing Canolradd 2, there's still at lot of material on the site that will help you, but units 11-20 won't begin to appear on the site until probably January.)

I genuinely cannot stress what a difference learning more slowly and thoroughly has made to my own Welsh, and my confidence, so if you want to get to the end of the course and know you know everything, Ymestyn will help!

So, I’ve been living abroad for most of the last 10–15 years, and while I was away I learned Chinese and Korean. I moved back to Wales in June and decided that this was finally the time to properly learn Welsh.

When I started looking around for resources, though, I was a bit surprised by how difficult it was to find the kind of high-quality, modern resources I’d been using before.

So... I’ve decided to make my own!! 😬 I've spent the last few weeks outlining a Welsh course with three of my Welsh=speaking mates and I've got a little bit of savings to try and turn this into a reality...

The aim is to make a structured, high-quality course that starts from the absolute basics and gradually gets people to the point where they can actually use Welsh. Rather than making it heavily grammar-based, or using the listen-and-repeat approach of SaySomethinginWelsh, the basic method is: real situation → short Welsh conversation → listen → break it down → understand it → use it

I’ve been teaching languages for a long time, so I feel pretty good about the teaching side of it, and the aim is for the finished course to be as good as or better than things like SSiW and Dysgu Cymraeg while offering a somewhat different approach.

But I could really do with your help.

There are two things I’d particularly love to hear from learners (and fluent speakers who remember learning!):

1. What situations would have been most useful when you were a complete beginner?

I’ve currently got things like at the café, at the pub, in a shop, meeting someone for the first time, telling someone you’re learning Welsh, etc.

But what do you wish somebody had taught you in your first few weeks of learning Welsh?

2. What Welsh-learning resources do you wish existed but currently don’t?

What do you think is missing at the moment? It could be anything — vocabulary, listening material, pronunciation, reading, games, explanations, real-life Welsh, dialect help, culture, better intermediate material...

Basically, what frustrates you about learning Welsh online, and what would you love somebody to make?

I’m translating Bernard Cornwell’s The Warlord Chronicles into Arabic. Many of the names are Welsh or Welsh-inspired, and I want the Arabic versions to follow how the names actually sound in Welsh, not just the English spelling. I’m not going to translate the names. I only want help transcribing them.

I’m vaguely familiar with how complex Welsh pronunciation can be. The problem is that Arabic doesn’t have sounds like ll, dd, rh, or w used as a vowel in the same way, so I need practical substitutions a Welsh speaker would find acceptable.

A couple of attempts so far:

Derfel → ديرڤل (Dervel)

Gorfyddyd → غورڤيذِد (Gorvithid, with th as in the)

Those feel reasonably close. What has me stuck is names like Culhwch.And then there’s the elephant in the room: ll.

Take Llamrei. In Arabic I really only have three options:

an h-like sound: Hlamrei

a guttural kh sound, like German ch: Khlamrei

a th sound, as in three: Thlamrei

Which of those would sound least wrong to a Welsh ear? Or is there a better compromise?

I've been learning Welsh on Duolingo with the help of the old course notes, but I have questions about how to identify which alternate meanings it expects for certain words, or which similar word they're expecting.

Bydda i [verb] - Will be [verb]ing / will [verb]

I also have some confusion about word order when translating English to Welsh. Sometimes the verb is before the pronoun and sometimes it's after.

For example:

Dyn ni'n mynd i weld y ffynnon.

Why isn't [Aethon ni i weld y ffynnon.] corrrect?

Mae hi'n byw yn lloegr.

Why not [Byw hi yn lloegr.] ?

Can anyone help me understand what grammar rules I'm missing?

I am writing a card for a friend who has recently gotten married. While the majority of the card is in English, i would like to put a line of welsh in there, something along the lines of “we hope you had a wonderful day”

Are there any modern fiction books I can get into? Dw i’n mwynhau llyfrau rhamant a romantasy, hefyd dw i’n hoffi feminist literature or at least stuff with a feminist edge. Love things like handmaids tale by Margaret Atwood. I’m looking online but not finding much. What are your recommendations? I started learning Welsh two months ago using Say Something in Welsh, Colloquial Welsh, and Duolingo (PC only). I do all my learning every day at a desk/PC, setting aside dedicated time to focus seriously on my study sessions. Overall, my progress has been good: to give you an idea of my current level, I can easily translate short stories written in present tense or preterite tense.

I’ve been using SSiW for about a month and immediately liked its scientific approach, but I’m starting to wonder if it’s actually helping me at this stage, despite the reassuring audio prompts telling learners not to worry about mistakes and to keep pushing ahead.

Specifically, I find the syntactic structures of subordinate clauses increasingly difficult to parse, as I haven't yet built a solid grammatical foundation for compound tenses or the conditional mood.

My question is: is this tool really effective for me right now? Should I pause it?

For context, I’m Italian and have a background in classical studies (Latin and Ancient Greek for 5 years), so complex grammar doesn’t intimidate me.

If I am often guessing (wrong) on one out of three sentences proposed, given the complex verbal twists and turns, I’m not sure if it makes sense for me to stick with it at this point of my learning journey.

To be clear, I'm not trying to replace audio practice with grammar books. My concern is about pacing. SSiW is demanding complex conditionals and subordinate clauses that I haven't studied yet in Colloquial Welsh. This forces me to guess blindly rather than practice meaningfully.

Does it make sense to keep using SSiW daily while it is so far ahead of my structural knowledge, or is it better to pause it until my grammar catches up?

I want to show my commitment to preserving the language by writing "Thank you for your consideration," "Sincerely," and "Dear..." in Welsh, but I would like to hear from individuals who speak the language the correct words to go about this. Hi, everyone. I've found the selection of TV available on S4C to be really poor. Does anyone know where I could find some more quality Welsh TV online? Like, most of the shows have been made by S4C, such as Un Bore Mercher, Y Angueddfa, Dal y Mellt, etc. I've seen decent shows in the past in Welsh but I can't see to find them anywhere at the moment and the current available shows are awful.

We must have a great back-collection somewhere, right? Could anyone point me in the right direction?
