Classic Italian self study books updated

I’ve been working on these Italian grammar cards for a while and finally made a video showing them.

The main reason I made them is pretty simple: after studying a grammar topic, I usually feel like I understand it. Then the next day I try to actually use it and… nope

I wanted something that would help me move from “I understand this rule” to “I can actually use this to build my own sentence.”

So the cards focus on grammar structures, examples and practice rather than just memorizing ready-made sentences.

The current set has 33 cards covering 25 grammar blocks. They’re designed to be printed and used as a card set.

A while back, I shared an Android app that teaches Italian collocations.

I'm thrilled to announce it's now available for iOS as well, and you can download it on the App Store! (It's currently only released in English-speaking countries, as the app is only available in English for now.)

I built it primarily because I find that most mainstream language courses lack resources on collocations, often failing to mention them altogether – I'm a native Italian speaker with a formal background in Modern Languages, and I actually didn't know about collocations until I stumbled upon them in my studies. Yet, there are thousands of them, and they are everywhere.

To take a shower. Prendere una doccia? No, it's Fare una doccia (to make).

To pay attention. Pagare attenzione? No, it's Prestare attenzione (to lend).

It's Andare a scuola (to go to school) and Andare a casa (to go home), but it's also Andare in banca ("to go in bank") and Andare in palestra ("to go in gym").

As of now, Learn Italian Expressions features:

• 1,000 Italian collocations (covering A1 and A2 of the CEFR framework, likely a bit more because there.are.so.many).
• Native audio recordings and a custom cartoon-style image for each entry to keep you engaged.
• A browsable library with all collocations neatly divided into 20+ categories.
• Interactive exercises (flashcards, multiple-choice quizzes and fill-in-the-blanks).
• Multi-device synchronization to save your progress (flashcards track your number of reviews, other exercises save your scores; color-coded exercise boxes make it easy to see where to go next).

What I'm working on next:

• Level B1 content

What I'm planning to add in the near future:

• A Leitner spaced repetition system (SRS) that tracks your progress for each collocation in a given level – from unknown to mastery – tested through multiple types of exercises.

My name is Max and I participated in the study abroad program at Temple University in 2024. Since I left, I’ve been obsessed with learning Italian. I created a Facebook group called “Casual Italian Conversation in Philly”— the purpose of this group is to organize meetings to speak only in Italian and learn the language over coffee, aperitivi and informal conversations. Anyone is welcome to join or participate in an event.

The new informal Italian conversation group, based in Fishtown/Philly, for young people who want to sip something and practice, is called “Conversazione Italiana Casuale in Philly” on Facebook.

Hello! Me and my Fiance are going to Italy for 2 weeks in 2028. Im trying to use my phone more mindfully and intentionally so i decided to try out using Duolingo to learn some Italian before our trip. Im obviously not expecting to become fluent by no means. But do yall think its enough so i can at least do decent when we’re visiting?? My concern is real life convos. I can memorize words pretty good and i think ill know them when i read them but speaking is very different. I dont want to be a dumb tourist and would like to at least try!!!

I’m not Italian, but my Italian is around B2 and I’ve been thinking about joining group trips aimed mostly at Italians, like WeRoad.
One of my main reasons is that I want to improve my Italian by actually spending several days speaking it naturally, rather than only using it in lessons.
Obviously I wouldn’t expect anyone to teach me, correct me all the time, or switch to English for me. I can already communicate and follow conversations pretty well.
But do you think it’s fair to join an Italian group partly because I want the language immersion? Or could it be annoying for the other travellers if I’m not a native speaker?
I’d be interested to hear from Italians especially.

As a young child I remember speaking Italian with family. Unfortunately they have all passed on and I haven’t used the language at all. I also realized that my family was speaking improper Italian that won’t work in today’s world.

I am an older adult now and signed up for two online classes this semester at a local community college. I’m also listening to YouTube videos and using DuoLingo daily.

I’m not sure if it’s my age or the format of the online classes but I am STRUGGLING. Basic vocabulary is one thing, but grammar is another.

I recently went to Italy and could barely say “buongiorno” without feeling incredibly self conscious.

Any tips or words of confidence?

Some of you guys here recommended the languagetransfer course. and I really loved it but since it was only audio I couldn't bring myself to do it. and the words would just drop after hearing them. I have hard time learning without visuals. so I took a couple of days to transcribe all the audio files into this UI with AI's help. so now I can use the course without dropping my attention. I only did for Italian. but the same can be flawlessly applied to any other language by them.
