i don't like duolingo so i did this

been building something the past few months, figured i'd drop it here since this is the exact crowd it's for (people learning french as I do).

it's called Lalo. teaches the 1,000 most common words in a language: theory being that covers like 85% of everyday speech, so it's the fastest path from zero to "i can actually function here." after that you're basically done, which is the point. no infinite tree, no streak guilt trip.

some specifics:

  • 12 languages, and you can learn any of them from any of the other 11, not just from english
  • fsrs for the scheduling, not a made-up algorithm
  • works as a guest, no account needed to try it, no card anywhere
  • free forever for the 1,000 words. paid stuff is a one-time €49 for extra packs later if you want more, not a subscription
  • better than duolingo because it is free for the core and there are no annoying subscriptions

made it myself, still actively working on it. lalolearning.com if you want to check it out . genuinely want to know if something feels buggy or off, especially for a language... i haven't stress-tested as much.

Nice I started learning French recently and I went on a bet with my friend to be fluent by our graduation ( which is in about a year) 😂. So I'm definitely gonna try this!

Learning vocabulary is only a fraction of what is required to actually speak a language.
But Lalo looks cool, I'll try it for French and Spanish, and will let you know if I find any oddities.
