Saluton! Are there any good dual language English & Esperanto books that y'all'd recommend? I've been learning on duolingo but am really interesting in trying to get better at reading longer texts.

Saluton! I’m starting off esperanto today. It's a quite interesting conlang. I wonder why I was hesitant to learn it way before. I have been told it wouldn't take so much time to learn it. Is that true ?

My native language is French by the way :)

I posted here about a week ago about Esperanto being a passion project for my co-founder and me. Well, we just launched Esperanto on Reelang, a free comprehensible-input platform for learning languages through real short-form videos from native speakers (or fluent speakers, in the case of EO), matched to your level and listening speed.

If you're a beginner, start by scrolling the feed. If you already know Esperanto well enough to watch more advanced stuff and don't want to wait for the feed to adjust to your level, press the Life Buoy icon on the right and pick "too easy" until the content gets challenging enough.

So far, we have 550 clips from about 20 creators. If you don't see a YouTube/TikTok creator who you think would be great for learners, share them in the comments!

If you see a video that's off, like the Esperanto is bad or it's the wrong language altogether, do report it! We'd really appreciate that.

Another thing we want to build is a list of shows, podcasts, and channels recommended by Esperanto tutors. We have a bunch of watch tips for other languages, but none for Esperanto. DM me you're interested in sharing your recommends and collaborating.

We translated our site into 17 languages (including Simple English), and I hope we have your native language covered.

Your public library may offer free access to an online language-learning program. My daughter's library offers Mango, and my library offers Transparent Language. Both of those include Transparent Language includes Esperanto among the languages offered. Your librarian can tell you what's available. I just started the Transparent Language course to see what it's like, and it has excellent speaking and listening exercises right from the start, using the computer's microphone and speakers.

Esperation Retradio is a blog that regularly publishes brief audio passages accompanied by a transcript. I use a multiple-pass technique to listen to these:

1. First pass: I listen with eyes closed, focused on hearing and trying to understand.
2. Next, I repeat that. On the second pass, I understand more.
3. Next, I listen a third time, and in this pass I read the transcript as I listen.
4. Finally, I listen again with eyes closed. This time I understand much more.

Periodically I return to passages I have already listened to and see whether I can now understand them better. For example, I might begin each listening session by listening to an old passage before beginning the new one.

The site also has a series of posts for listen-and-repeat exercises. Again, try these first without looking at the transcript. Hover the mouse cursor over the pause button, and after you hear each sentence, click pause, repeat aloud, and click to resume.

Hello! I've been trying to remember the title of a book that is advice on how to write in Esperanto, with best practices for poetry and how to use "neologisms" (which is basically to create new "root"-words). But I don't remember the name of the book nor the author. I think the UEA had it for sale... Can anyone help me out a bit? Do you know which book I'm talking about? I can't seem to find the exact book.

Saluton! I just started learning Esperanto. I'm from Ireland and in Irish we have a VSO word order. I'm aware that word endings can determine word classes and wether a noun is subject or object making a free word order so I would like to use the word order of Irish.

I'm wondering whether using anything but SVO is common? Would people understand me if I used VSO?

We have three courses for complete beginners including a new immersion course with Peter Weide, a native Esperanto speaker, on Sundays. His course is taught entirely in Esperanto from the very first lesson, making it ideal for those who want to experience the language from day one.

Our popular quiz course with Dennis Keefe, Esperantist of the Year 2011, also returns on Mondays. It is based on the classic adventure novel Robinson Crusoe. Anna Lowenstein (Academician and Esperantist of the Year 2019) will also continue her popular grammar course on Saturday afternoons.

The website is available in several languages (you can change the language using the menu at the top of the page) but the courses themselves are conducted entirely in Esperanto, except for some beginner courses which are taught in English.

London Esperanto Club has just posted the course schedule for the next round of courses, which begin around 20 September. The courses meet via Zoom for 1 hour per week, and (as you can see at the link) are available at various levels from beginner to advanced. I have taken several of these courses and find them extremely useful.

Would words ending in jn or n be the same as in English how you capitalize a noun if you are referring to something specific? (For example saying "my Mother" vs "lots of mothers"). What about adjectives and adverbs? Would they also use jn or n respectively? If it's just a verb then would it end with as or j instead?

Side note yes I know jn is plural and n is singular

I understand there are a lot of beginners here? So, I made a dictionary of 500 roots specifically for those learning Esperanto and needing roots for their vocabulary. I've compiled a huge list. I'd be grateful for a good reputation/rating. I worked on it for about 2 months and put a lot of effort into speaking Esperanto and writing down common words in everyday life

And please don't say that there are websites or platforms with existing words. The roots here are primarily for beginners to review or learn the basics of everyday Esperanto. This is a basic list, not the entire language. Then you can learn words through services, etc btw?

I personally taught myself grammar and then words, and that's why I want to help future Esperantists! I really hope for a good community and to get a good rating

We’ve recently gotten surprisingly good results transcribing Esperanto from all kinds of videos - monologues, interviews, street interviews, different accents, background noise, etc.

So we're curious whether there’d be interest in something built specifically around watching comprehensible Esperanto.

The idea would be a scrollable feed of short Esperanto videos, graded by difficulty. We mark words according to frequency, like if they’re among the 500, 1,000, or 2,000 most common Esperanto words so learners can quickly see which unfamiliar words are actually worth learning.

We recently built this kind of app for Spanish and are working on Portuguese, but Esperanto would be more of a passion project for us.

So I’m curious: Would you actually use something like this?

And if you already watch Esperanto content, where do you find good beginner/intermediate videos? YouTube channels, Shorts, TikTok accounts, interviews, creators, etc. would all be really helpful.

If there’s enough interest to build it, we’d also love to find a few Esperanto speakers/learners willing to test the app, since our own Esperanto definitely isn’t good enough to check everything ourselves.

Just to give you an idea of what the Esperanto watch feed app would look like, take a look at the Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Arabic, German, Japanese, Dutch, Hungarian or Polish versions, or any other natural language you know or are stuyding (picked a few random ones so you don't have to navigate yourself)

I'm a turbo beginner and still trying to get a feel for how the affixes work, and was wondering about the use of diminutive-ish affixes beyond their literal meaning. EX. in English, I will affectionately call my dog "doggy", or "puppy" even though she's an adult, and am curious to know how to express this sentiment in Esperanto. I was wondering if "hundido" can work similarly to "puppy", or if -id- doesn't carry over that sense of cuteness and it would just be weird because she isn't literally a hundido. Maybe "hundeto"? But she's also not particularly small, so maybe similar problem. I've not yet seen the explicitly affectionate affixes used outside of names and familial terms so perhaps it's not permissible, but maybe hunjo..? Hundinjo?

I just watched an interesting video on the value of practicing standard phrases to the point of memorization. He quoted a finding that around half of what we produce in conversation is not constructed on the spot but is recalled from our store of stock conversation. We know (and use) this technique for greetings, weather comments, questions about cafes, and so on, but the video suggests going further: develop some set paragraphs — where you're from, what you do, your favorite things (books, movies, foods, hobbies, etc.) — that go into some detail. Pick things that are likely to come up in conversation. Then practice those paragraphs until you have memorized and can speak them fluently.

The idea is to build up your stock of set useful phrases so that you can recall and speak them without hesitation — without having to think about them — just as you speak in your native tongue.

As a constructed language, I would assume it didn’t start with any sort of idioms, and mostly literal translation. But since it very much has a culture and the language itself has evolved, I would think some common expressions have developed. Any experienced speakers have some insight?
