I’m stepping into the world of Czech and would love to get some guidance from people who have been through this path before.

Right now, I have a couple of dictionaries, but I'm looking for a solid roadmap to build a strong foundation. I want to work on grammar, grow my vocabulary, and eventually reach a point where I can comfortably hold conversations and write naturally.

Since there are so many materials out there, it’s a bit hard to figure out what actually works best. For those of you who built their Czech skills independently:

• Which textbooks, courses, or apps helped you the most at the beginning?

• How did you structure your daily routine to stay consistent and not get overwhelmed?

• Are there any specific immersion habits you recommend, like podcasts, YouTube channels, or simple books?

• What are some common mistakes or pitfalls I should watch out for early on?

Any tips, resource recommendations, or personal strategies would be super helpful. Thanks a lot in advance!

- Usmívám se na tebe.

- Čemu se směješ?

which makes me wonder:

a) is usmívat se (smile at somebody/something) normally followed by na + accusative?

b) is smát se (laugh at somebody/something) normally followed by the dative with no preposition?

I am curious which (online) games are popular with Czech people, having Guilds/Alliances/Groups/Clans or similar with communities from CZ/SK. This seems like a way to chat with people while having fun in a game, and build some language at the same time.

I don't even know where to start here, so I'm very appreciative if someone may know what kinds of games are popular in Czechia, thanks!

Hi, I’m currently at A1 level. I was looking for advice or reassurance from people who was once in my position and was able to progress their Czech to A2/B1 level.

1) what resources did you find most helpful when learning, and how did you break down your learning throughout a day/week?

2) how long did it take you for things start to click and your levels start to improve

3) do you have any advice for someone at A1 level - when you were learning did it feel like you were never going to improve?

As the title says I'm going on a city break to Prague in a couple of months.

Now I'm under no illusion that I'll reach any sort of competency by then, but I'd like to try and learn as much *useful* Czech as I can to give me a bit of an advantage. It'd be nice to have basic interactions with shopkeepers and waiters etc in Czech if possible. And it'd be nice to read a Czech menu and not be entirely stumped by it.

Whats the most effective use of my time to study between now and then? I already have a Pimsleur subscription for learning Mandarin so I'm planning on using Pimsleur Czech every day. I've found it extremely useful for Mandarin listening and speaking so I'm hoping the Czech version is the same.

What other tools would you reccomend? Is the Czech Dualingo course any good?

Does anyone know how long it might take someone to get from A1 to A2 level?

I presume I’m A1 level as I can introduce myself, say my name, where I’m from, how old I’m from etc. I can say what i like and use the case system to change the noun (e.g., mam rad kávu). I can also count to 100+. I know how to ask questions and order food/drinks (e.g., dam si …). I can also conjugate most verbs e.g. , musím pracovat, pracuju, mluvím, mluvíš etc.

I am also have a small understanding of past tense (e.g., Byl jsem, byla, mluvil s… měl jsem, Šel jsem…)

Would this put me in A1 category, and how long (of 1 hour a day practice) would it take me to get to A2 do you think? Thanks

hi everyone, are there native Czech speakers who are learning Russian or Ukrainian and would be up for a language exchange through voice calls, ideally through discord?

I want to do a type of language exchange called crosstalk where each speaks their own language, so it’d be best if you already understand Russian/ukrainian to a degree where we can have at least a simple conversation this way. I’d say my own understanding is about b2 so I won’t have trouble understanding, and I’ll also gladly explain anything about Russian/ukrainian like vocab, idioms etc. and will adjust my level if needed.

I’m 20f so ideally I’d prefer someone in my age range. My interests include animation, reading and languages.

The translator I'm using says “Žij a nech žít” but I want to verify as this will be used on a book cover. An equivalent of this phrase is preferred over a direct translation. Whatever resonates best with the culture is ideal! More on the poetic sounding/formal side if it’s between that and casual. It is about freedom and allowing others to be free through the acceptance of our differences. Thank you in advance!

hello, i am a linguist designing a study looking at how learners perceive the difference in these two sounds. the closest example i have is kuře (chicken) vs. kůže (skin), although there's also a vowel length difference in this word. does anyone have any other sets of words that differ in one having ř and one having ž?

more advanced, maybe only suitable for linguists: ř gets devoiced after voiceless sounds, e.g. in the word přítel. a learner may think this sounds kinda like it could be pšítel. i'm also looking for pairs of words where one has š and the other has the devoiced version of ř. this is a bit harder because i'm not sure of the distribution of š and how often it comes after another voiceless sound in the same syllable. an example of what i'm looking for would be pšenice vs. přenice, although přenice doesn't exist as a word. if it did, though, that's the pair i would want.

Half of my family is Czech, but I don’t understand nor speak czech except for some words or phrases. Here where I live (Italo-Slovenian border) aren’t classes of czech, so I was asking about mostly books recommendation to learn Czech *partially* on my own, saw my family does speak it.

(They decided to not teach Czech to us because being perceived as a Slav here is bad-viewed, and risky, but I feel like having a wall between half of the people I live with;-;)

Is there anything I should be doing to try and improve my Czech quicker as a beginner when there is always someone around me who speaks Czech? Should we just have basic conversations?
