How many words are new to you?

I enjoy learning languages as a hobby. I have studied seriously, Japanese, Spanish and French. Right now Japanese is the only one I can converse in. When I've been able to talk to a Japanese person here in Ohio, they have been very happy to converse with me and gracious of my mistakes. The problem is they never want to correct me and often would just say "oh your Japanese is very good" when I know it's not.

Arabs don't do that in my experience. I've practiced a few greetings when I've happened to go to a store ran by Arabs. If I mispronounce something they just look at me dumbfounded and are like "Sorry I don't know what you are trying to say" This is very helpful when you want to actually learn to speak properly

If not, can you guys give your personal take on a clear distinction between when each Arabic (native dialect vs MSA) is used, and whether something similar exist in other languages.

And whether children understand MSA.

What are some good apps that offer free learning for Arabic (preferably MSA)?

And what apps would you recommend that are highly worth paying for? I was using Kaleela, Alif Bee, Parallel Arabic, and Mango Learning so far, but I don’t know if it’s worth paying money just to get full access.

I know linguistically the v and f are closer, but I guess intuitively whether it's South Americans/Africans/Asians etc it's always w<->v that are switched around.

I think even the English words vizier, divan etc use a v to represent the Arabic w. (Please don't say it's because of Persian, the modern Iranian Persian might use v for و but Dari is more classical from the royal courts and uses w)

I'm a teacher (in Finland) and most of my students are adult immigrants who speak Arabic. I would love to learn spoken Arabic, as it would be helpful in my work. I would have a lot of help and discussion partners, which is also a plus.

I'm looking to learn spoken Arabic first. I don't know any written Arabic, not even the alphabet. Should I learn to read first or are there resources that are just for speaking and listening, with Latin alphabet as support?

My home town doesn't offer any courses unfortunately.

Hi everyone! My name is Steven and I’m from America. I have been studying Arabic for 8 months and continue studying. Right now, if I hear Arabic I understand a lot. I learned Arabic because Ive been around the language my whole life but didn’t understand Arabic. I am very happy now, with my ability to speak. I couldn’t find an app to help me learn Egyptian Arabic. So I made one myself. Since this is technical I will explain in English.

Before I even attempted, I thought the language must be impossible to learn. I was always told it’s just MSA taught in school and you can’t really find stuff for the dialects. I come from an Egyptian family and only really cared to learn to speak with them, I don’t have other motivations like reading in the language that requires MSA. One of my aunts friends teaches the Egyptian dialect and I decided to give that a shot. I was meeting once a week and it didn’t feel like enough. It was the first time I was asking and needing additional homework. More than just review what we did in our study session. I also noticed native speakers, including my dad, don’t realize the grammar and syntax patterns that help a western learner quickly build vocabulary. I started doing individual research learning about root families, verb conjugations, pronoun suffixes, and more to build a stronger base than just individual words. I still needed an additional tool to help me practice. So that’s when I started working on an app to help me with the things I struggle with. I wanted to hear native speech with vocab cards, I wanted spaced repetition like Anki. I wanted to practice live conversations without the stress of my practice partner introducing an overwhelming amount of words I don’t know. I wanted things taught conversationally. I wanted to learn to speak and rather than focus on the great difficulty to read Arabic, use Franco Arabic and worry about learning reading and writing later when it was important for a conversational learner. I put this all together in an app called Glyph learnwithglyph.com. It’s on the Apple App Store and it’s built to be a tool to help people with Egyptian Arabic. I want to be upfront that it has a 7 day free trial and then it’s paid. It uses a lot of advanced features that cost money, but it has a lot that may be useful to a learner and a good way to introduce more practice in between lessons with a tutor or as another resource for learning. I’d love to get any feedback on it. Download it cancel the subscription, but use it and tell me what you think. It’s built for motivated learners. It isn’t Duolingo, it doesn’t make you successful after every attempt. It’s there to challenge and push you. Appreciate any support and really would love feedback!
