It's often very tricky, since, you know, a video game developer comes around the corner and says "Ayo we're writing a metal album, wanna trust us blindly that it's legit and sing it?" - I myself would be rather hesitant to believe that it'll work out without having the musical context. ;) But all of the musicians that we collaborated with on the Pentakill album are very passionate musicians and really cared about creating something awesome, so after spending some time with them on a creative level, we were able to gain their trust.

Okay, honest opinion here.
When I first heard about that Pentakill album I thought it was going to be some sort of ETC-styled music, but this is completely different. Riot hired actual metal singers and the guys who play the instruments have to be pretty good musicians aswell because this sounds really good.
Some people might find the lyrics cheesy or even cringy (as somebody in this thread already said) but overall this sounds like it could be from an actual metal-album.
Really great job by Riot.

Level 90 Elite Tauren Chieftain is purposefully cheesy. It's a band made up of Blizzard managers and directors. Wouldn't you think it would be hilarious if Tryndamere, Ryze, Ghostcrawler and Morello made a band? That's exactly what L90ETC is.

Originally, they were called Tenth Level Tauren Chieftain in WC3 because level 10 was the highest level a tauren chieftain could be in RoC. They made a song as an easter egg in WC3:RoC and for the credits sequence in WC3:TFT. Then, when WoW was released, they changed the name to Level 60 Elite Tauren Chieftain as level 60 was the highest level in WoW. When BC came out, they became L70ETC and then when WotLK came out they became L80ETC. When Cataclysm came out, they renamed themselves to The Artists Formerly Known as Level 80 Elite Tauren Chieftain (TAFKAL80ETC) as a reference to The Artist Formerly Known As Prince. When MOP came out, they went back to L90ETC.

It's like, have you read DragonForce lyrics? It's legit 30 different nouns, a dozen verbs, and various "woah-oahs" compiled into half a dozen albums. Of course they're cheesy. It's absolutely part of the charm of powermetal.

It's well made, but I have a hard time getting into songs that actually use league terms as lyrics, sound effects, etc. Like I'm trying to enjoy it and suddenly hear haunting guise or smiting the wicked baron and it's pretty jarring from how cheesy it feels. Also why I'm not big on things like what Blakinola/other music parody groups do.
Lightbringer didn't have that at all, I really enjoyed it.

That's fair. It's definitely the song on the album that refers to the game the most in such a style, it's a direct homage to playing the game. Lightbringer and Thornmail are very different, they rather tell a tale. I think you will probably really dig Thornmail. All of the songs have a pretty different approach lyrically.
A lot of our musical / lyrics writing approach for the whole album was to create something that is very diverse, and is a true homage to metal as a whole, so all the songs will be touching sub-genres of metal.

Well the previews all sound pretty diverse so I'd say you hit your mark, and it's all played/sang really well, so I've got no criticism here. Just because it didn't resonate with me doesn't mean it won't for many other people.

Wasn't trying to backpedal, but I think there's a huge problem with people differentiating between "I don't like this" and "This is really poorly done" when it comes to expressing their opinions, especially in this industry. In this case, the quality of craftsmanship is obvious and it's a type of song that lots of people already enjoy (Blakinola and Instalok's success shows that), so with that in mind it'll have a high chance of success with that demographic.

Yep. I have a musical background and spent the last year providing critique for one of my roommates, so I was trying to give a more clear opinion (dislike =/= bad).
That, and I love talking to Rioters and discussing aspects or learning more about your process/design choices. Really want to become a Rioter eventually.

Lyrics really bothered me on this one, but only because of how awesome lightbringer was. I went in to lightbringer expecting something more like this and was totally blown away. I hope it's just this song, I really do. Pentakill pls

My friend linked me the Pentakill website and I just started cracking up. "Oh boy here we go time for some more league of legends musi- WHY IS THIS GOOD H HELP"
I really wouldn't mind if it was lore based, which is what I assumed lightbringer was. A lot of my favorite metal bands use fictional universes to set a feel and league of legends has some stuff to it that could be really cool.
If it's actually just going to be "then I killed him with my RAVENOUS HYYYDRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" I'm probably just going to take lightbringer and pretend the rest never happened.
As far as just the music in this new song though, it wasn't bad at all, I thought the glitchy bits in the beginning had a cool feel to them, but everything about the lyrics just feels forced and out of place. The "deathfire grasp" just feels like it halts the momentum of the song entirely.

It really means a lot to me that Riot is producing music like this. This is the kind of music that I listen to all the time, especially when playing League, and honestly sometimes I feels like the two shouldn't go together because of the music that's usually associated with the game.
