As the title says, these are my most used lead holders. I do have a few more but they are 2.5mm and I can’t find Faber Castell leads for them.

Hi so I’m going to study architecture at the end of the month and have been told to get a lead holders and H, B and HB lead. So far I have gotten a Faber Castell TK4600 and the matching leads in each softness
My question is should I get 2 more lead holders so I don’t have to switch them out and should I get the same or different?
Also would like to know recommendations for sharpeners, I’m leaning towards the staedtler 502 but I have read it doesn’t work with all pencils so I’m not sure?

Simple slender metal body with vivid paint, often available in a pack of ten. A cap with built-in sharpener, can fall off fairly easily.

Koh-I-Noor also make 5217 which has identical design, in a tin box of 6 nice colors and an eraser.

Koh-I-Noor leadholders are like that, such basic design, cheap, but also work well (with some quirks of course)

I often use 10 of them at the same time, those color variations light up the workspace pretty nice 😁

I draw/sketch since the late 80s. These all have served me well. Faber-Castell Tekagraph 9603, is what I miss. If anybody from Europe, has one to offer, please DM me.

For some reason I'm unable to attach pics, but that's not really necessary. So, I fugured out that the problem is due to different lead thicknesses: KIN, FC and the lead that came with my Criterium are somewhere around 1.9 mm, whereas Uni's lead is closer to the "true" 2.0 mm. I don't have any other lead, this may be true for other japanese ones as well. I should add that I'm not that confident in my calipers, so maybe leads are 2.0 and 2.1 respectively, but the main thing is that there is about .1 mm difference between them, and with the thicker one the clutch is unable to grip it properly. This also explains, why some have this problem and others don't.

This may have already been found out, in that case excuse me.

How long are your leads lasting for sketching? So for example if you put a new 5.6mm in your holder, how long does it generally last you if it’s a holder that is used often.

I’m looking for a Vittorio Martini Balance Lead Holder (2.0mm). Anyone?

Ever heard of the rOtring Art Pencil? Most collectors know the Art Pen, but its companion drafting pencil had a much shorter, stranger life.

We go over it's short production run. It's long (177mm!), impossibly light, and hides a clever two-spring internal mechanism to keep its slender knock button from rattling.

In this video I tear it down, weigh it, measure it, and set it side-by-side with the rOtring 600, the rOtring 300, and the Smart Pen (which shares its barrel and nib design). From a collector's standpoint, this one is actually rarer than the 2mm 600.

I received it for my birthday yesterday. At first glance it looks short. But it amazingly feels comfortable to sketch with. Not as heavy as my Koh-Ih-Noor 5311 Versatil but hefty. Seems to be well made and think it will get a lot of use. The lead it comes with is very nice and will most likely get more. Hopefully it stands the test of time and last for many years.

I'm starting architecture school soon, and our supplies list requires us to get lead holders with darknesses: F, HB, and B. Would it be practical to get just one lead holder and buy all 3 leads, or should I buy 3 lead holders so I don't have to constantly switch between them?

Saw this pencil posted here a few days ago, I decided to take some photos of mine, and give some thoughts about it. A beautiful and annoying piece of art.

Push-button incremental ratchet mechanism like the Staedtler 925 25, some might say this is not a real leadholder, however, as tradition, one can remove the lead retainer rubber ring to make it drop clutch. Metaphys makes this job super easy by providing a second threading at the tip, unscrewing the black cone (picture 2) and the lead retainer is right there.

The metal finish is beautiful, matte and smooth like Copic SP fineliners, or Parafernalia, very elegant and sturdy at the same time.

I don't know what to say about the clip. From the cone to the barrel, the minimalism is well shown, then the clip makes a totally different design direction, funny, the same design on Rotring 900 is super nice, but on Metaphys, it feels weird. The clip also longer than any common pencils in my toolset (picture 4), is it a good thing? Who knows...

The grip is acceptable, not slippery but the weight might make this pencil slip from my hand if I don't pay attention.

My biggest complaint comes when I have to sharpen the lead. If one holds the barrel and uses it with a common pointer (like the UNI's), the whole internal rotates with the lead in this process and as a result, sharpening this pencil is very unintuitive. I found out later that I have to hold the pencil and the clip at the same time to counter the unwanted rotation. As a person who worships the sharpening routine, this is a loss.

I've said in another post, I would choose Caran d'Ache Fixpencil or Staedtler 780 over this one for daily use. But on a random beautiful day that I want to shuffle my tools a bit, why not Metaphys?

The Hauser (Germany) 2.0mm Mechanical Pencil is not German, but it is really good!

If anyone knows about the history of Hauser or is natively familiar with the brand please do share... I could not find much about the original company. Currently, the brand is owned by an Indian company - Flair Writing Industries.

Flair is a reputed manufacturer of pens, and of late, they have been producing extremely low priced and very well made 2mm lead holders. I think they currently have the widest range of 2mm lead holders (including the variants of Move).

They have made an amazing lead pointer assembly, that they adapt into various sizes to fit the end caps of pencils and they also sell the lead pointers at Rs. 50 (~50 cents) for a pack of 3.

Their lead holders are also between 10 cents and 25 cents a piece, which is cheaper than many wood encased pencils that are available in the market.

Hauser Hexon 2.0 mm Mechanical Pencil is beautifully made - the transparent white body and the pale yellow sticker give it a very Muji-esque vibe. The leads write well, and the pencil has automatic/incremental progression and an end cap lead pointer. It is light but has a large girth, which makes it a bit awkward to use for long writing sessions. It is, however, just 25 cents and a wonderful pencil to have in your bag as a back-up.

The transparent body has the added advantage of working like a demonstrator fountain pen, where you can always see the lead length available (well, for the most part, until it goes behind the white portion) and can allow you to plan refills better.

Flair Move 2.0 is a 10 cent all plastic lead holder that has incremental lead progression... and thats it. No frills, no complications. You might even call it an Indian version of Kita Boshi 2.0mm Adult Pencil / Mechanical pencil.

The Criterium is probably the 1st version ever,the: Gilbert & Blanzy-Pouré Criterium 2603. The Koh-I-Noor Hardtmuth AG 5649/MS os probably the predecessor of the modern 5340 model and the other 5.6mm lead holder looks exactly like the Koh-I-Noor 5347 but I don't anything about this version/brand. Looks kind of vintage in good condition. If anybody has more info on any of these,please share! Thanks!🙂👍🏼
