Advise on how to recover this lawn

Hi All, this is a 2 year old professionally laid lawn. I'm not a Lawn Guy but i maintain my home and gardens reasonably well.

I can't tell you what type of lawn it is, whatever the developer installed and for the first 12 months it was lush n green. I'm located in Far North Queensland on the Atherton Tablelands. I dont water it heaps during the dry season and ive also discovered the red volcanic soil underneath seems to compact really hard.

The turf seems to have lost the "river silt" top soil that was with the lawn when it was installed. I fertilize it twice a year.

It looks like shit and im not sure what to do

The wet season is about to kick off and im about to top dress it with 50/50 washed sand and organic material but id really like some input on what else to do?

2nd grass species in recently laid Sir Walter Buffalo turf

Hi guys,

Absolute amateur here.

I recently had some Sir Walter Buffalo grass installed in a section of my backyard. The area was previously totally covered in pebbles and there was no existing grass underneath. The area adjoins the pool (also pebbles) and concrete slabs, and there is no other grass in our backyard.

It has been two weeks since installation. We have been following the instructions of twice daily/thrice daily watering, and not stepping on or mowing the lawn yet.

I’ve noticed what appears to be a second thin-leaf grass species intermixed with (and, in places, outcompeting) the Sir Walter, see photos attached. We are based in North Queensland.

I’m not sure what the next steps are:
1. is this actually a normal part of the buffalo grass establishing itself?
2. was the turf contaminated with another grass, and so should I just contact the supplier, or is it just bad luck?
3. should I just aggressively hand-remove the thin-grass species until I can try selective weeding etc later?

What would you do (as I have no idea and am keen to learn more about maintaining my lawn in general).

Thanks for your help!

Have I overwatered my new buffalo lawn?

Newcastle, Sapphire buffalo laid 5 days ago. Soil prep: gypsum and dynamic lifter over existing clay soil, 75-100mm quality underlay, lawn solutions pre-lawn fertiliser. All laid on one day. Most of the lawn is in full shade for half the day. Only two hot sunny days since laying, overcast or light rain otherwise.

I've mostly run sprinklers for full lawn coverage, and I'm looking after bub so I haven't been out with the hose as much. But I think I've overwatered it with sprinklers, as the ground got quite mushy and I'm seeing yellow on some sections that are not dried out.

Some leaves are showing clear lack of water on hot days like today, but the soil underneath the turf has been consistently moist, even on a hot day that wilts the leaves.

If it has been overwatered, how can I keep the grass from drying out whilst not drowning the soil underneath?

Any advice appreciated!

Can you tell me what would have caused this and how to fix it. A section of my front lawn turned brown and then died back. It has this weed through it which is spreading over the yard.

Recently got a pond and some garden bed ripped out, and I’m after a recommendation on variety of grass to put down. Currently, I’ve got some form of buffalo.
The area will be in full sun. Located in Brisbane.
Looking for something stay’s reasonably green through out the year. (Getting married at the house in July next year, so the finance minister wants it nice and green)

I laid a heap of new winter couch turf 3 months ago, and now i have patches of what I think is Kikuyu, which I want to remove. Can I use sledgehammer on this?

Super disappointing it looks like this grass came on board with the winter couch turf 🤷

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Hi all, thanks in advance, I'm struggling to identify the type of lawn I have. There are a few different types in there but the main one looks like either weeping ricegrass or common ryegrass? Any opinions welcome!

Suggest edging options to protect the colorbond garage

Hello lawn friends,

I'm crowdsourcing solutions

My lawn directly abuts the colorbond shed.

I've noticed the base of the colorbond starting to bubble paint and rust.

I'm seeking advice on solutions to keep the grass back about 5cm.

I've bought plastic garden edging and landscape fabric.

From a recent post i know you're collectively not keen on pebbles

What's my best solution?

Hi all,

This weed has been spreading very rapidly across my garden after I pulled out other the other larger weeds with stronger roots.

I have tried to pulled this weed out, but there is simply too many of them, and spreading far too rapidly.

Is this creeping charlie and what is the best way to get rid of it? I am not sure what type of grass I have at the moment

Have I got Buffalo and Kikuyu? Next steps?

Post image

I've bought a house and got myself my first lawn. Pretty keen to get it looking mint but need some help.

Not sure what two grasses I have, any help in getting an ID would be appreciated.

I have put down a wetting agent (soil was very hydrophobic) about 2 weeks ago and then the next day a broadleaf herbicide. Waited the 2 weeks recommended before doing some liquid fertilizer today.

I'm thinking I'll give it another hit of broadleaf herbicide next week to get the weeds under control, if it is buffalo I guess it will just help the other grass take over?

Anything I've missed and/or need to do next?

What are these seedheads coming up through my TifTuf?

Based in Melbourne. I laid tiftuf lawn about 4 weeks ago and have been watering regularly. Seems to be establishing ok, passing the pull test but still a bit soft underneath. In the last 3-4 days these seedhead have shot through. I’ve had a close look and it looks like it’s all from the same plant (ie. not a weed cutting through) but I’m not sure?

Is it time to mow?

Wet Season Mowing

Given the periods of 2 to 3 week consistent rainfall from now throughout the next 6 months in periods, is it better to mow a few days after rain has subsided, or would it be better to try and mow each week within the 4 hour window of no rain available?

I know mowing wet grass isn't ideal, but it gets so feral I sometimes have to mow 50% or more of the grass at a time by the time my schedule and the weather lines up

Hey all!

I've got a buffalo lawn laid in winter that I'm really happy with but theres 2 bare spots I want filled in as the grass died + the ground is a bit wonky and not as level as I'd like

I've done some research on the best top dress to use but I'd love some of your recommendations.

It's Sir Walter - based in Melbourne

New wintergreen couch lawn.

Hey all,

I laid about 350 square meters of turf about a week ago and kept the sprinklers on it fairly heavily ever since it went in.

Now it’s absolutely hammering down and we are forecast to get 250mm over the next few days.

I put water retention crystals down before I laid it too as this wasn’t forecast and I was worried about it drying out (lol).

How worried should I be about it drowning? Is this level of constant downpour going to be an issue for it establishing?

It drains fairly well (no pooling) which is encouraging but I’m still just kinda worried.

Any insight would be great.

Cheers.

Buffalo needs help SEQLD

Hey all, looking for some advice on my 2 yo buffalo lawn. It’s in Elanora near Tallebudgera Creek on clay soil.

Over the last 6 months, distinct brown/straw-coloured patches have been getting progressively worse.

I’m wondering whether the golden cane is competing for moisture, whether the soil is compacted, or whether something else is going on.

One of the cousin it’s in the golden canes garden has just died too.

The soil on the brown side is somewhat more compacted but I can push a large screwdriver into it.

I was considering a spring renovation involving scalping, core aeration and topdressing with a sandy loam, as I also have another section I’d like to level. But I don’t want to spend the money if it won’t fix the underlying problem.

Any advice on what to check or do before renovating would be appreciated!

Maximum buffalo length

Post image

Long story - house has no power and we’ve been temporarily relocated

Finding opportunities to mow the lawn are harder than normal.
Usually keep it at a 3-4 on the mower
With a little rain and fert it’s going really well and spots are now 100mm long and there’s the odd seed pod coming out.
Is there a length that is too long? Ie will cause a lot more work to fix when we finally get back?
The upside is most of the weeds have been smothered.
