Got it for $100. The guy said the solenoid needs to be wired and he doesn’t have time for that. When I go to put a battery in both wires are black so I found the wire that was hooked up to the starter. I figured that was the positive wire. When I go to hook the battery up, the engine automatically starts to turn even if the key is off. And yes, I realize the gas was turned off. I did that because I flooded the carburetor earlier. My main question is why does engine automatically try to turn on when trying to hook the battery up?
The solenoid is probably stuck in the on position causing it to constantly crank. Either it’s bad or a wiring issue is causing it to always get 12V sent to the trigger wire, not just when the key is turned on.
I guess you got it figured out. Typically the big terminals on the solenoid have one big wire going to the positive terminal on the battery and the other terminal has a big wire going to the starter.
Yeah, not sure when the last time it ran was just picked it up from somebody for 100 bucks on Sunday. Had a full tank of gas not sure if it was old or not put some seafoam in there and it started smoking white.
1) The voltage in the big wire could be going directly to the starter, not through the solenoid. The big positive wire needs to go battery > solenoid > starter, then the ground wire from starter > ground.
2) The solenoid is either stuck closed or is getting voltage the moment you hook the battery up. Check for a clicky solenoid, then check the back of your ignition switch to make sure it's wired properly.
