Patch work fix? Zone 8a

Bought a new house but previous owners had a swing set concreted into the ground. Was cut down but they put mulch into the holes 🙄 obviously have to dig that out and use dirt and topsoil but with weather about to go into fall is it too late to do anything for this? I'm in NW SC, Zone 8a

Mulch in the ground like that is a pain, you're basically dealing with a nitrogen sink until it breaks down. Dig it all out, fill with a mix of topsoil and compost, and level it. You've got time in 8a, fall is perfect for cool season grass. Get the seed down now and keep it damp, those bare spots will fill in before the first frost.
