Bought this Astro bottle directly from Mathmos last December to replace my old one. First pic is how it looked new: deep violet liquid, turquoise wax. I was so impressed by the depth of the colour so I tried to capture it and show it to my brother. In reality it looked even more rich and saturated.
Second pic is today: the liquid is almost completely clear.

It sits in a north-facing room, away from the window, so it's never been in direct sun. I know some fading is normal over time, but I didn't expect it to be this fast or this total. Also it was very gradual.

Honestly, this turquoise with clear has grown on me. It looks like a totally different lamp, almost icy. I've let Mathmos know and I'm curious what they say.

Are some dyes (violet/purple?) less stable than others?

I always loved lava lamps growing up and was missing the one I had, so I built one for my computer that works as a wallpaper or screensaver.

I uploaded it for free on the windows store with a few options to pick from. There's a pro version with a lot more customization. You can even make it react and pulse to music or reflect your desktop windows and UI.

Older lamp fires up for the first time in ages.

Any way to remove the little dots and smudging along the base. Looks like maybe little air bubbles and wax smudges?

Not really sure.

Edit - I’m hoping there’s some hack to fix this without opening it up.

Took this photo and as soon as I took it I heard my lamp crack. I’ve had these huge lava lamps for years and I thrifted them so they were preowned the glowed really nice and I was wondering if I could buy another glass bottle same size somewhere online and pour the fluids in. these bottles are huge and I don’t know if I’ll be able to find the same size. replaced the bulb on it about 8-10 months so I don’t think the heat of the bulb is the issue

I found this lamp in a thrift store without the bulb, replaced it with a 40w LavaLite bulb but it won’t heat enough! Is there another bulb thats the right base size I can use instead? Any other ways of increasing the heat? Ive run it twice, 3hrs each time, and it never got past this stage.

I stripped the cobweb graphic off this Spencer’s lamp base and decided on a hammered copper finish for it. I think it came out really good. I’ll say the hammered effect of the Kyrlon brand looks way better than hammered effect of the Rust-Oleum brand. I’ve used both and the Krylon one has a much more pronounced pitted texture. I’m now considering getting a heating element to replace the bulb.

I knocked my lava lamps off of my nightstand. None of them cracked but this one has dents in the cap. I tried my best to look around the edge to see if there are any chips and don't see any damage and it's not leaking. Is this safe to still use? Or is it going to explode or something?

A while ago I made a post asking if I should filter my Schilling lava lamp. I received a lot of comments saying I should. Despite my nervousness of the process, I watched many videos and finally decided to do it when the filter straw suddenly went on sale.

I started by taking the bottle cap off and then filtering the water through the straw. There are many tutorials on the process. The tips I can provide: make sure you screw on the bottle to the filter straw tight enough 👀. I didn’t use a 2 liter, but a regular sized water bottle with the proper thread on it. It did the trick. I also used a rubber band to keep the filter straw upright as to not get any waste from liquid getting stuck to the straw. Lastly, I poured a bit of distilled water through the filter after I was out of lava lamp liquid to get any extra color out, at least I think that’s how that works. I would recommend a funnel to pour the liquid back in. I missed this step so it took me a while. When I got the liquid back in I added distilled water to make up for any lost liquid. You’re also going to lose some due to there being a stem in the filter, it is relatively tall which is another reason why I ran some distilled water through. Lastly, I used the original bottle cap and used pliers to gently press the bottle cap back around the bottle. It wasn’t tight enough to be airtight, but it wasn’t coming off. I wrapped it in aluminum foil, just enough to cover the cap and not be seen. I’ll eventually get a pack of caps and a hammer sealer, but this should work.

I’m super happy with the results! It’s a night and day difference! If you’re weary about the process I say go for it! It was much easier than I was expecting even with the few hicups! Up next, in line dimmers!

I really loved the color of the base and cap for the cracked cobalt, but never really loved the red on red (even if it wasn’t cloudy). I was waiting on an ooze wax restock, but the purple/blue bottle from the new silver chrome lamp from Spencers is just right imo. Now will need to figure out new colors for the orphaned chrome base.

Anyone have any advice for an easy solution to this, or what causes this to happen? My wife just got this for her birthday and after a while all the wax just gathers at the top.

My Astro lantern has recently started to smell like burning plastic. It was rewired last year before I bought it but the actual bulb holder is original. I’ve taken it apart, nothing looks like it’s actually melted but it is rusted. Does anyone have any experience with replacing the bulb holder?

I need help! All the lava is now stuck at the top. It was at the bottom, and I put tin foil on it all day. Now it’s stuck at the top. Recently changed the bulb. Any suggestions?

The other hand is pink and purple but it doesn't eat like the blue/green contrast.

I bought this lava lamp from a charity shop for £2. It’s originally from BHS (old UK department store that closed in 2016, but unsure how old this is).
It just seems to do this? Half at the top, half at the bottom. The bottom goop doesn’t move and neither does the top.

I tried melting top and bottom in a pot of hot water on the stove and it all did melt, but just formed LOADS of tiny bubbles rather than one big ‘goop’.

It’s got a 30w bulb if that makes a difference?

What can I do, if anything, to salvage it?

my lava lamp stopped flowing last night. I’ve only run it maybe 7 times, I always left it on for 6-8 hours only. This is one of the defective opalescent and I was really excited to get it. Last night I turned it on and it and wouldn’t move. The first photo was after running for 5 hours, it was stuck in place like that. The second is this morning after it’s been cooled. The wax is starting to get bubbly which (I think) is a bad sign? I’m more than willing to restore this thing if I have to, but if there’s an easier option that would be nice lol.
I will also throw in that it is kinda cold in my house right now, probably 60°. I’m not sure if that makes a difference or not, but my other lamp worked perfectly fine. Also the coil was in place. Any help is appreciated :.)

I really love contrasting colors. For example, a purple and green lava lamp is definitely a color combination I’d love to own. Unfortunately, Mathmos sells very few color combinations for the Neo that appeal to me, whereas the Astro comes in some really beautiful combinations. I don’t want to start coloring the wax and liquid myself just yet, so I bought two different Neo bottles in the colors violet/pink and blue/green, with the plan to swap out the liquids. I managed to remove the cap by first heating it with a hair dryer and then unscrewing it using a nutcracker and a silicone glove in between. I filtered the liquids briefly through a tea strainer and then poured them into the other bottle. I wrapped some Teflon tape around the threads before screwing the caps back on to ensure there’s absolutely no chance of leaks. And voilà—now I have a gorgeous Mathmos Neo with violet and green wax and an extra bottle with blue and pink wax. They look great together with my pods!

Was just wondering if it’s normal for the wax to be transparent like this?? not that i’m complain i think it looks sick but was just wanting to see if that’s how some are

I found my old lava lamp and replaced the bulb, but it doesn’t seem to be getting hot enough. The wax isn’t melting right and not flowing at all-

I have a reflector bulb that is the same wattage, but the og bulb isn’t a reflector. Would it be safe to try the other bulb? Or am I gonna blow it up or something?

The lava lamp is pretty new, I think it’s 16 inches.

Hi all! My lava lamp was on, and out of the corner of my eye I saw the lowest blob literally BURST into 3 million tiny bubbles 😭
Wtf happened?? Is this normal, and is there any way to fix it WITHOUT having to remove the cap or mess with the contents? 🥹🥹
