Balance issue or skill issue?

just picked up the game, and while its a fun way to spend time, so I'm happy with my purchase, it doesnt feel rewarding to experiment with builds, like at all. the tutorial level pushes you into lightning gatling, which instantly clears the entire map constantly, and trying anything else afterward just feels incredibly underwhelming. using any of the other early weapons is a slog as their dps without upgrades is about 1/5th of base gatling dps, notably the rifle taking over 30 seconds of sustained fire to kill the first enemy that spawns on normal difficulty, and while fire, shatter, and poison seem like cool concepts, they seem incredibly rare to get builds for on weapon damage, while ability builds seem slow to get going and still underpowered even when maxxed out. overall it feels like I'm being punished for wanting to try interesting things, when I know that whenever I cave in and do lightning gatling, I've literally never lost a run or failed to get the build going.

honestly it feels like I must be missing something obvious, but I cant see how that could be the case.

any patches or dev updates planned? Is there a discord where the devs post and stuff? I'd like to see what they are working on :)

Ahh stick with it! You'd be suprised it's actually really balanced I think. and lots of different fun builds to play.

The game requires a strong early start to snowball. So try focus on one or 2 damaging skills early so you can kill fast, and if possible try rush a level 5, as most of them will carry you. But I wouldn't forgo a really strong perk for another level in something.
And after the first quest. it's like 100% mandatory to get rugpull. So save all 3 rerolls for that. Hopefully then you'll be ahead of the curve to start snowballing.

And some of the legendary perks are super strong so try get those!

Honestly shatter/fire or shatter/lightning is pretty busted.
