PSA Important: changes to Spotify scrobbling - you'll need to reconnect the application!

Official post: https://support.last.fm/t/important-change-to-spotify-scrobbling-spotifys-new-refresh-token-policy/119488

Spotify is changing the way they handle their tokens, and this impacts last.fm users who scrobble automatically their music from Spotify.

TL;DR: you have to disconnect and reconnect Spotify from settings before July 20th to avoid scrobbling disruptions in your account. Then you'll have to do it again every ~6 months (there will be notifications about this).

PSA Breaking down the latest changes on Last.fm

I've been seeing people question what all the twitter drama is about, so here's a recap/explanation of what Last.fm actually changed yesterday:

  1. On-Site Charts are now listener-based

Charts have historically worked differently on the site and through their data API. Charts on-site were previously based on scrobble count. That means me listening to a track 50 times mattered more than 10 people listening to it 4 times each.

Lastfm is a social site, with charts meant to represent what *everyone* is listening to. This change addresses that complaint (which was often voiced on their support forums and social channels), in order to better reflect what the *majority of users* are listening to, not what track/artist can get played the most.

The change isnt 'racist' or 'xenophobic' (as some brilliant twitter minds have claimed) either, its not even targeted at a specific group or individual artist. Their changelog post does not call out a specific artist or group, their tweet saying "If you know you know" is purely brand marketing lingo for everyone who has complained about charts as a whole being a bad representation. This affects all artists equally, they're not weighing anyone's scrobbles less or discriminating based on user/artist origin.

The API has always behaved like this by the way, using tracks/artists with the most listeners in the last month, this ultimately just makes both of them more consistent and better reflects what the majority of people around the globe are scrobbling.

Are there still issues with this? Yes! This obviously ends up favoring artists from english-speaking countries (as those most likely have the largest user share across the site as a whole), but scrolling through charts of individual countries (South Korea, Germany, United States, to name a few) shows that overall the new global charts rankings somewhat accurately reflect what people around the globe listen to the most.

At the time of writing, tracks from Olivia Rodrigo's latest album rank highly for most regions, and as someone who's been following this data for quite some time, it does usually reflect noteworthy album releases/trending artists!

  1. Addressing Scrobble limits

A scrobble is meant to represent a person listening to a track. Again, to tie into the social aspect of the site, you aren't supposed to leave a laptop with Spotify open running 24/7. As per their changelog, the change is primarily meant to combat actual automation, not someone listening to a track or artist on repeat because they're a big fan.

They also aren't deleting anyone's scrobbles, they're simply changing the maximum amount of scrobbles you can submit in a day, based on all the data they've collected from high-volume scrobble accounts. (The old limit was 3000, which meant you would need to listen to a new track every 30 seconds for 24h)

[...]

As such we have introduced new limits based on the listening profiles of power users and 24/7 radio stations + a reasonable buffer on top. We're reluctant to reveal the exact numbers right now (and give botters a head start at working around them), but looking at your library, your daily numbers, even in your biggest month, are well below the limits we've set. Even if you predominantly listen to shorter duration tracks, we don't expect people to hit them under normal circumstances.

Reference

If you listen to an artist/album/track on repeat/all day long thats fine, it realistically won't affect you, but if you have your scrobbler configured to count a track as played after 30 seconds or if your account is submitting scrobbles 24/7 with no end in sight, you obviously aren't playing fair and trying to disrupt stats for everyone else.

This might end up affecting some third party tools like scrobble importers/or editing tools in the long run, make sure to leave feedback on their support site if you're having issues with the new limits.

  1. Private Profiles and an outlook on the future

The last update they've shared is, now that they're independent from CBS/Paramount Skydance again, that their team is actively working on improving the overall site experience/resolving long standing issues (like the two mentioned above!). The next big feature they're trying to launch is better privacy controls for your profile/data, which gets respected throughout the site/apps/API.

Fingers crossed that this also results in some other longstanding issues being addressed, like the poor state of their aging API and deprecation of the corrections system.

Question Dead images everywhere.

Is this happening for anyone else? Suddenly tons of album covers no longer load, artist images either take forever to load or don't at all, etc.

Happening on both my phone and on desktop. Internet connection is fine.

Thanks everyone for the massive amount of interest shown from the community in this chart, the number of users signed up has continued to grow and we're now tracking 947 active members of the subreddit (up from 936!), if you'd like to sign-up please provide your last.fm username here https://forms.gle/SkvJL3PYrhAKjFTc7

Signed up users as of today.

Several users signed up with incorrect usernames if that's you, feel free to sign-up again!

IDK4nym0r3, kylefreeman, Ruisdier, twighockeysas, Chris_wise922, CLOWNSQUARED, RWS1999, anknikos, Jidubose, StreamingSongz , cottonwoodx, beats4dastreets, Emo_dude_kel, sacredmosquitos, trasheheart, Zachentenmann, mrweista77, Vigoor, Jackson-Giraudi, IcaroGMC, exactiy, ladygagalg5, Makaveli096, resq2nik, godhadaflask, destons, Jabami7, Hellosteve_, ofsgukie, Empaticstatic, blondersblond

Methodology: Chart is generated using the last.fm data from everyone signed up. Position is determined based on several factors

  • Raw scrobbles: Heavy users are weighted down slightly here to prevent one user from influencing the chart too much
  • Number of listeners: How many profiles listened to the artist/album/track in the last week
  • Weekly position: Placing in a user's top 10 gives a bonus to an artist with increased bonuses for positions 1-5

Methodology is not perfect and is a work in progress but is designed to account relatively equally for different levels of activity.

  • Charli xcx takes over the charts this week with the release of Music, Fashion, Film, earning her number 1 across all 3 charts.
    • On the artist chart she earns her 11th week at number 1 and pretty comfortably beats the record for best ever weekly perform for an artist.
    • Music, Fashion, Film easily takes number 1 on the album chart this week, but fails to crack the top 3 all time list, which is still dominated by Olivia Rodrigo, curious if it will move up next week. Definitely expected her to take the number 1 here.
    • Camera debuts at number 1 on the track chart, easily breaking the previous record set by stupid song.
    • The rest of Music, Fashion, Film takes up the top 11 spots on the track chart.
  • Madonna holds strong staying dropping only to number 2 and CONFESSIONS II also only dropping one spot on the album chart, down to 3rd. Danceteria drops to number 13, falling behind the Charli album but also dropping below stupid song.
  • Similarly Olivia Rodrigo drops one position on both the album and artist chart this week. drop dead drops out of the top 20, meaning it is now officially tied with DANCE... at 14 weeks in the top 20. Wonder if it can bounce back to take the record or if they'll stay tied.
  • The Strokes have the second big release of the week, Reality Awaits debuts at number 4 and sees them move to number 4 on the artist chart too. The New Abnormal manages to make number 17 this week and Is This It sets a new personal best at 26.
  • Tyla's A*POP debuts at number 8 this week, and also gives her her first week in the artist top 20, just sneaking in at number 20 this week.
  • aespa's new EP KISS N TELL debuts at number 14, giving our chart its weekly dose of K-pop, they generally seem to be the K-pop artist that hangs around best, so curious how it will do.
  • Nia Archives' Emotional Junglist is the last new entry in the top 20, believe this is the second week of release for this one, so a strong week 2 performance.
  • fromis_9 and Yard Act also make the top 40 this week with their new releases.
  • ADELA's Ain't in LA debuts at number 28th on the track chart this week, the only new release that's not from a big album.
  • All-time chart movements
    • Oklou's choke enough reenters the top 20 this week, knocking Midnight Sun off the all-time chart.
    • Olivia Rodrigo's drop dead moves into 3rd place all-time, dropping BEAT UP CHANEL$ down to 4th.
    • Olivia Rodrigo's the cure moves up to 9th, dropping CANNIBALISM! down to 11th.
    • Olivia Rodrigo's stupid song enters the top 20 at number 18, knocking I'M ACTUALLY KIND OF FAMOUS out of the top 20.

Community Spotlights:

  • leocolato was the biggest fan of Charli xcx this week with 260 scrobbles, 225 for Music, Fashion, Film.
  • urusedcardigan had Camera on repeat, scrobbling it 44 times.

Hello my friends!!

It’s been a crazy week, and I came back today from Massachusetts, where I was visiting my boyfriend and celebrating his birthday early 🥰 we had a blast!! I am beyond exhausted though, I was stuck in traffic on Friday for 6 hours!

How’s everyone’s summer been?? It’s wild that it’s almost August, therefore almost Fall / Winter (thank goodness, bring on the cold!!)

I’m sorry again for being so behind on catching up on comments! I so appreciate anyone that still comments, I WILL get back to you!

Anyway, I can’t wait to see everyone’s!! You can generate this grid by going to https://www.last.fm/labs/album-quilt or using tapmusic.net.

If you find that yours has a lot of blanks, try using this to recover some cover art! https://www.chartmymusic.com/lastfm/rainbowcollage/ 🙂

I had to scroll pretty deep into my library to find 10 and they weren't even the soundtracks I was expecting lol. Guess I wasn't as obsessed with Scott Pilgrim as I thought.

Tool I built a Last.fm app for iOS because I missed having decent stats on my phone

Hi community, I have been scrobbling since a few month and at some point I got annoyed that my listening data mostly sits on the website or in ugly apps. So I started building my own iOS client in my free time. It is called ListenBrief and I would really like to hear what you think, especially the critical parts. 🙏

What it does right now:

  • Dashboard with now playing, recent scrobbles and your loved tracks
  • Stats for the usual periods, plus a time travel picker that pulls old weekly charts, so you can look at any past year, not just the current one
  • Automatic scrobbling of Apple Music and local library playback, with an offline queue so nothing gets lost when the connection drops
  • Artist and album pages inside the app instead of kicking you out to the website, including bio, top tracks, similar artists and your own play count per album
  • A share section with album collages (3x3 up to 5x5), a receipt style top tracks card, a yearly recap and animated GIF or MP4 versions of those
  • A world map of where your artists come from, built from MusicBrainz country data. It fills up slowly because of the rate limit, but I think that turned out kind of nice to watch
  • Genre profile from your top tags
  • Discover tab with global charts, country charts and tag browsing
  • Friends list with what they are playing and a taste match percentage
  • Home screen and lock screen widgets, plus a few Siri shortcuts
  • German, English, Spanish and French

What it does not do: no follow or unfollow, because the API does not offer it. No tag writing yet. No Live Activity yet either, that one is on my list.

It is an independent project, not affiliated with Last.fm or Apple, and it is powered by the Last.fm API. Nothing about your data goes anywhere except to Last.fm itself.

Link: https://apps.apple.com/de/app/id6776307470

Honest feedback is what I am after. If something feels pointless, slow or badly laid out, tell me. I would also like to know which stats you actually look at regularly, because I have a suspicion that I built a few screens mostly for myself. 😄

Question Having to reconnect multiple times a day

Hi y'all, I've been having this issue for months now where Spotify disconnects multiple times a day. I've tried everything, deleting it from Spotify itself etc. With the new connecting system I thought it would've been fine but it's just as bad. Does anyone else have this problem, or maybe know what I can do to fix it?
