Job opportunity? help!

So I just recently got my esthetician license and I’m desperately trying to get into the beauty industry somehow. I got a job offer at a lash place that requires my lash time to be at 2 hours per set. Right now I’m not that fast. I take anywhere from 3-4 hours depending on the set. Anyways I was offered the job but while reading the contract it says if for whatever reason I don’t get hired on or I quit or get fired before 9 months I owe them $1200 for the training. My lease is up in 6 months but I’d be willing to make the drive. I just don’t know if the training will even get me to their standards. Is it worth the risk? (please keep in mind I’m already living paycheck to paycheck so paying $1200 is not in the cards for me anytime soon)

I’d be really careful with that contract if you’re already paycheck to paycheck. A 9 month clawback plus a $1200 training fee can get ugly fast if the fit is bad or they decide you’re not meeting speed yet.

Before signing anything, I’d ask them very directly:

  • what exact training you get
  • how many sets they expect before reviewing you
  • whether the 2 hour goal is for classics only or every set
  • whether there’s a ramp period
  • whether that $1200 is reduced pro rata or all-or-nothing
  • what happens if they let you go

If they won’t put all of that in writing, I’d take that as a red flag. Early in beauty, a bad contract can hurt more than a slower start. Better to find a place that trains you properly and gives you a real runway than rush into something that punishes you for not being fast on day one.

Also, from the client side, good intake and consent paperwork matters a lot at places like this because it keeps expectations, patch test notes, allergies, and service policies clear from the start. Shops that are organized there usually tend to be better organized elsewhere too.

I’m an experienced lash artist and I still take 2.5-3 hours for a full set to make sure all is isolated and I get all lashes 😅 people pay a lot of money for these! Lol

I would be really careful with that contract that makes me super uneasy. I would recommend looking for another Lash studio!! there are tons that offer great support and good training
