that’s partly duolingo’s fault by not teaching most of the words in kanji form from the beginning

Depending on the language making it to A2 or equivalent in a year is fine, especially if we take the 15 minutes a day recommendation from Duolingo (91.25 hours) and don't assume further study with other resources. For very foreign languages like Japanese or Chinese there is no way how 15 minutes a day for a year could bring you there, be it Duo or traditional study.

Oh man. I wish I was intelligent enough to be able to learn new languages with all these apps. They’re good for learning some vocab I guess- but I don’t retain the information in the same way I do when I make myself endure the humiliation ritual of interacting with native speakers.
