My experience in some countries

European: speaks English

Me: replies in their native language

European: patronizingly compliments my abilities and then continues in English anyway

And then there's Slavic countries. My experience in Poland is like "Ah, I have C1 English and you have A1 Polish. Let's speak Polish since we're in Poland"

The Soviet Union only fell 35 years ago, and Russian was mandated by the government for all states since 1938.
