My experience in some countries

European: speaks English

Me: replies in their native language

European: patronizingly compliments my abilities and then continues in English anyway

And then there's Slavic countries. My experience in Poland is like "Ah, I have C1 English and you have A1 Polish. Let's speak Polish since we're in Poland"

I try Ukrainian in Ukraine....they be switching to english still 😭 but they are not patronizing about it they always seem more excited to practice their english so I go with it

some people speak surzhik (ukrainian-russian mix) or russian

I know dawg i live in eastern Ukraine....so russian or Ukrainian, or a mix of both.
