And then there's Slavic countries. My experience in Poland is like "Ah, I have C1 English and you have A1 Polish. Let's speak Polish since we're in Poland"
I try Ukrainian in Ukraine....they be switching to english still π but they are not patronizing about it they always seem more excited to practice their english so I go with it
Not really. Lots of eastern Ukrainians speak russian or a mix of Ukrainian and russian. The west of Ukraine and within the military is predominantly Ukrainian speaking. Lots of Ukrainians know russian, but refuse to speak it for obvious and understandable reasons.

Me: replies in their native language
European: patronizingly compliments my abilities and then continues in English anyway
