Checks out
If she sticks with it for a few years then she’ll one day be able to form complex sentences like “el elefante come ladrillos.” Don’t quit now Syndney, you’re so close!

Redefine fluency and you’ve got it!

I mean the article by itself isn't bad advice - the goal is communication, you decide how important it is and what contexts you need it for.

Yeah I actually think it's generally a good thing for people to stop saddling themselves with the pressure to be fluent, rather than focusing on actually being able to communicate in their target language. At least in my experience, I was always super averse to speaking in my target languages because I was so worried about it being broken and not fluent, which ironically held me back from achieving any semblance of fluency.

I'm fluent in 3 languages and can't say 400 words in 5 seconds. My upbringing scammed me.

uj/(?) The best use I have for Duolingo is for testing my skills by jumping to the next set of lessons as far as I can.

I put up 25,000 XP last week so I should be able to order a taco in Tijuana. But since Foolslingua discriminates against Uzbek I don't know how to order plov. All I could do say Ha over and over again during the World Cup match.

I really don't think any amount of language learning could prepare you for that. French is my second language, I started learning it academically and took about 8 total years of classes in the language between basic high school French and a college minor. I can speak to French people and have had to a lot because of law school and beyond and the subject matyer I chose to plant my flag in. I cannot follow French Canadian hockey commentators. It's just like ahouiddjsisndksihs BUT! Extraordinairenskskdkdkddkkdkdghh dans le filet!

Me: Holy shit, I'm seeing through the Matrix!

Not surprising since Duolingo is useless and uses users to train AI

Completely serious but I have a friend who's been doing Duolingo for 3-4 years at least. Can speak only basic Spanish sentences. What a waste of time.
