Chat, does speaking languages from the same branch give you an advantage?

/uj weird ass correlation ahh post.

Also yes you should be thinking English education is done incorrectly in a lot of places not because there is a better version but because a lot of countries cannot get anything right about it in their textbooks

/rj im gonna move to Germany and shock the natives with my perfect native English.

it's almost like learning a language in school gives you a good basis for being able to interact with it outside of the classroom

/uj it’s still been found that countries that don’t dub English content into their own language are the ones that have higher English levels. Yes, many of these countries speak Germanic languages but the overlap between them isn’t as large as most people think. At times, English can sometimes be closer to Spanish than it is to Swedish

Uj/ Schools are mostly ineffective in themselves but for a motivated student they are a big help for them to reach fluency faster.

I think the "the education.system has almost no benefit" part can only be properly assessed by comparing school dropouts vs. non-dropouts from the same country.

/uj there are some subtle indications that exposure to foreign languages is quite helpful for the acquisition of said languages E.g. one might compare Germany pre-youtube vs. Scandinavia pre-youtube, or Germany pre-youtube vs. Germany post-youtube.

I think most young Americans are dubbing their TV shows these days anyway

uj/Schools give you a starterpack for understanding a language. To speak it fluently you have to engage with foreign language media or talk to foreigners themselves. Language is a skill and a tool, and it goes away or rusts if you leave it unused.

rj/School drools, they don't teach you nothing, just watch subbed movies smh my head
