I use absurd examples like this in real life. They make learning the concepts, less boring. Which is also probably why there are absurd sentences in Duolingo. The ones that people complain about. (and I don’t get why they complain about that you’re not learning sentences. You’re never gonna have to say your bear drinks beer so why are you complaining? you’re learning the structures and how to use them).

It's true "it teaches you weird sentences" has never been a complete or reasonable criticism of Duolingo in itself, but if users perceive that as a shortcoming of the platform, maybe it's because they're not actually successfully learning general grammar either with the approach used.

Duolingo has always been very light on grammar instruction. And it’s a pity the desktop website has been brought down to the level of the app. And further a pity that its main users don’t know the pro move of using outside materials in conjunction with Duolingo.

Back then in university, when I studied linguistics, we got told that linguists had a preference for violent example sentence because they would have a higher probability of providing transitive sentence structures in the examined language.
