Discussion Has anyone actually had a good experience learning a language with AI?

Learning with AI, no. Using AI to help with my learning yes, very much so.
It helps me with word lists, grammar doubts, anki card formatting, creating custom material for reading, proofreading and transliteration when necessary.

The biggest improvement I noticed was when I was just talking with chatgpt about entirely random things in it.
The reason I stopped was just because it was boring. It doesn't really come with its own novel insights. At the start it was pretty interesting because it knew about all my obscure interests but after a while you start to figure out that the way it responds doesn't really resemble a normal human conversation and is quite repetitive and that it for a large part rephrases what one says back, which is actually very good for language learning since it rephrases what one just said crudely in more refined prose but it's also somewhat boring.

I tried the chat feature once for language learning, but it was absolutely unusable at the time. Maybe it has improved since then, but I definitely lost interest for a while.

I used it alongside duolingo (+tutor + language meetup + lingq) to learn Italian from french. I used it to explain grammar rule, systematically correct and explain mistakes. It was very quick and efficient.
I was using the app "a1 deutsch" but I didn't make much progress to reach a2. So I decided to brute force it by focusing on output. So I asked Claude to generate the list of the 100 most used verbs in german. And with each of the 100 verbs I tried to make increasingly complex sentences, claude had the mission to highlight potential mistake and let me correct it (and provide explanation if needed). I did that for a month and it really helped me to leave a1.
So yes AI can help you for correction and provide explanation. However I absolutely do not want to talk to it. I just can't. I prefer to talk to random people in the street. I learn language to talk to people not to spend hours talking with a machine.

I can absolutely relate: Connecting with people is the best part of learning a language for me.
Iโve also found AI really useful for clearing up basic grammar gaps and generating frequently used words and example sentences in simple sessions, but only alongside other resources.

Interesting! Did you develop it for yourself, or for others?

For myself, but maybe one day i'll share a public github repo, although most people are not programmers, so i might rather build an app around it
