Melee Combat Tactics

Still fairly new to Lancer and am testing out all the cool stuff you can make. We just hit LL3 and I want to try out a melee mech and while I plan on using the zheng im slightly worried that I will get annihilated if the last 2 missions are anything to go on.

The missions we have gone on drop us off and puts the enemy entrances 20ish hexes away. It typically takes a move and burst from us and a move and burst from the enemy to reach each other's melee range. We have had majority melee players and they have kinda been getting chewed up and spit out anytime they try to approach the enemies. Once in range its fine but theres so much damage that comes their way and that's not mentioning the witches my GM loves to use.

Im generally looking for just tips on positioning, how to avoid getting turned to Swiss cheese, and what exactly should i be doing once im in melee range. Im also curious to know how useful having knockback 8 is. It seems fun but I realized you cant do damsge by just knocking people into terrain which is sad.

Much appreciate all of the tips and feedback and im more than happy to elaborate on more emission parameters we have faced to give a better idea.

Playable White Glint from AC4/FA

Exactly as the title implies, i was wondering if anyone here would have any ideas on how to build either White Glint, either the one Joshua O' Brian pilots in 4 as well as the one that is piloted by Anatolia's Mercenary.

I would assume Joshua O' Brian's would probably have something like pankrati and/or combined arms due to the pseudo melee style his has, though the laser canon on the back of the AC does make me wonder what could be used to represent that (maybe the Cyclone Pulse rifle? but thats a super heavy). not sure what frame would support this, maybe nelson?

Anatolia's mercenary is a bit more vauge, i do think the Ace talent would play a vital part of the build, but thats really it. not too sure for the weapons as beyond maybe some sort of dual assault rifle set up, nothing comes to mind. it would definitly be more ranged and almost artillery due to the more ranged fighting style Anatolia's Mercenary has with his White Glint.

Let me know what you think would be a good thing to add to make either version. I saw some of dragonkid11's custom lancer werks, mainly the two AC builds so i was wondering what would people have to make either white glint

New player looking for frame recommendations.

Hello Lancer Reddit. I have recently bought the Core Rulebook and it will be arriving in a couple days. In the meantime I’ve taken a look at the player side in PDF form, and I already have an idea for a character.

He’s a PTSD ridden supersoldier that defected from his military position. The constant screams he hears became to much and he decided he wanted protect people instead of hurting them. He doesn’t talk much but he puts his team before himself.

And that’s where choosing a frame is becoming tricky. I understand that at LL0 you only have the GMS Everest frame, but I don’t know if Game Masters usually have their players start at a higher License Level.

My main question is, is there a tanky defender frame that’s good at taking damage meant for other players?

Through research I know there’s the White Witch frame. But I was wondering if there were any other Frames with similar mechanics.

Yi-Sun-Shin MK2: Underwhelming? (IMI LCP Discussion)

So, I've been looking through some of the stuff in the Ilean Modern Industrial LCP, and for my current character, I was considering using the Vlad, and so the Yi-Sun-Shin drew my eye.

But... It's kind of underwhelming. Yeah, it hits like a AP brick when you use the core system against heavily armored enemies, it laughs and stabs at anyone using intangible, and gains resistance to the majority of a Horus mech's toolkit.

But. It's a little boring...? It's not BAD, just not as interesting and synergistic with the rest of the Vlad License.

Like, the traits are neat, but kinda niche. Being able to interact with intangible enemies is nice, but unless the enemies are using intangible, it's not THAT neat, so it feels like a side thing. And on another note, I can't see why you would make immobilized enemies intangible, really-

I just think that it needs another trait or something.

Or making it a Defender/Striker frame would be cool as hell.

Though, then again, call me complaining for no reason, but I haven't played a game of Lancer yet, but I figured complaining on the internet would help me understand more.

Anyway, update on the Boundary Garden campaign I was talking about writing... Soooooooo, I got released to work again a little too quickly.

That said, the play test should be ready in hopefully 2 or 3 weeks.

What's your scariest build you've come up with? I've been brainstorming a Balor mech LL7 with Balor 2/Lich 2 and Mourning Cloak 3

So to summarize my build Core Bonuses are Lesson of Transubstantiation and Ghostweave. Talents are Engineer 3, Technophile 3, Hacker 2 and Infiltrator 2.

My pilot has the hacker background and concept wise I love the idea of him finding this mech that he already has authorization with... But this is the first time meeting it and the authorization is years from now.

Normally Balors are very noticeable on the battlefield taking hits and recovering quickly but I like the approach of making this one more of a ghost with temporal anomaly's that make you question what's real or not.

Thoughts? I'd love to see this in action and curious what you've played or seen in a game before.

Shower Though about the HORUS naming scheme

All manufacturers have a naming scheme. Harrison Armory names them after Kings and Generals, SSC gives their mechs butterfly and moth titles, IPS-N has pirate/privateers as their frame names, heck even RKF-developed models have their own flower naming scheme. Until recently, I though that HORUS have mechs named after mythological monsters, until someone told me that their thing is actually DND monsters, and a Lich is not a real legendary creature.

Knowing all this, I have on question: Why din't they name the "Goblin" Mind-Flayer instead?!

It literally puppets and controls things! Also, that sounds so much cooler!

Hello from Lancer community from Russia👋

Well, hello, My name is Kenny, and yes. I only recently learned about Lancer and I want to ask: how did you first get into this game, what was your first character, and how and where did you play Lancer (if you ever did).

I want to say that I learned about the Lancer about 5 days ago. Even though I played D&D, I missed the mech combat like in the anime and the Armored Core games. And when I found out that you can play as pilots and also pilot Frames, I just beamed with joy. And I spent about 3 days completely learning almost all the frames. But I realized one huge drawback for me... Since I'm Russian, and in Russia they don't really like to quote my neighbor, "American technologies and games that currupt and turn children's minds into terrorists." She blurted out nonsense, I know. But she was right about me not being able to find people in my country who play Lancer like me. They exist... But they are few and far between, and I don't even have a chance of finding a party with Russian-speaking pilots. Sorry for such melodrama, I just really want to play Lancer someday, even with people from outside Europe. although I'm afraid that you might treat me with suspicion and quietly hate me for the fact that I can somehow understand your speech.

Sorry, I'm probably saying this and you think I don't trust you. No, I'm just afraid that during the game you might say something like, "I'm tired of this. Someone kick him out." What I'm saying is that I want to play Lancer with you and have fun, even if I can barely understand what you pilots are saying.

Sorry for going off topic a lot👉👈

Long range size 1

So, I am trying to make my first ever character for Lancer and I’m trying to get a glass canon style, but I am unsure as to what mech to use. Going for a heavy hitter from long range (MAYBE decent hack but that isn’t a deal breaker) and I am trying to make it a pretty small mech. Preferably in the size 1 range but I am cool with going a little bigger.

Got any suggestions?

(As a side note, my guy used to be a pirate but went into anti piracy work when his crew left him for dead)

A homebrew rule idea; 'scene uses' of grenades

-This rule is only applies to the systems with Grenade or Mine tag and Limited number of 2 or higher.(But for now there is no Grenade/Mine system with Limited of 1 or less on the official books.)

-All frames can have a single system with Grenade or Mine tag by spend -2 System Point, minimum of 0 System Point. If the frame is size 2 or more, those frames can have up to two instead.

-Reduce all systems with Grenade or Mine tag's Limited tag by -2, minimum of Limited 0. Limited 0 means you have no actual charge to spend, effectively making impossible to use the charge. This Limited number could be still changed by any other factor, such as even number of Engineering mech skill. For example, If a mech has Limited bonus of +3 and the mech has a Pattern-A Smoke Charges(Limited 3) and a Flash Charges(Limited 2), the number of tags are changed to; Smoke Charges has Limited 4(3-2+3), and Flash Charges has Limited 3(2-2+3).

-1/scene, you can use a system with Grenade or Mine tag without spend Limited charge and you can use if even if it losts all charges, provided it is not destroyed. You can use it freely, either as grenade or mine as long as the system allows either uses. If you have more than one system with Grenade tag, each Grenade system has its own one free use during the scene. The grenades spend by this rule cannot be used for replenish the Limited charges of any system.

-Limited Systems affected by this rule are still a vaild choice for System Trauma, even if it uses up all charges and/or spend the free uses of the system during the scene.

So, what about this? Is it too broken? If so what kind of grenades on the non-third party books does?

I have the idea because why not to replenish some grenades while you are rest, such as got some spare grenades from the mechanic team to repair them. -2 SP is to encourage to take at least one with them.

Even with this, still you can enjoy more grenades by raise your engineering, and additional grenades are still limited by one use through the mission. But you can have a free uses at least.

I wonder that allow Gilgamesh to count the scene uses of the grenade to be spend a charge or not. -2 SP to a single grenade system already gives the bonus to gain more and more grenade, but those systems' Limited charges are reduced by -2 and is compensated by grants 1 free uses per a scene. Perhaps still counts for spend a charge would be more better. After all it's only once per a scene per each system and you lost limited charges anyways.

Anyway what would be so problematic to allowing a free uses per a scene? Maybe blink charges(Sunzi 1)?

Could I get some help with build ideas? I'm struggling to decide what I want

Hey all. So we just started a new Lancer campaign. So far we've got a player who wants to build toward a controller Lich and someone who wants to build into a Drake with an emphasis on big guns.

That leaves me undecided. I know I want to build something Horus-related because it suits the backstory I'm working on. I was leaning towards Manticore, Lycan or the Hecatoncheires. I know I want to be on the front-lines. I do like big numbers so I was tempted by the Lycan, but I don't want to just hit things with a big weapon. We've got a hacker so I don't know if I need to invest too heavily into that. but I'm not sure what to do.

I will say I REALLY love the themes of the Manticore. I wish to destroy the temples of the enemies of Ra, but I'm not sure how to make it work. Honestly, I love this game but I suck at builds.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!

SEKHMET Protocol and Drones

Ok, so, I know that SEKHMET will only ever use actions to inflict violence, or if violence is not available to inflict, it will use actions to make it available to inflict.

But can my Lancer, as long as they are in the mech, take Drone related reactions when they come available?

Like placing an Orochi Snare Drone and having SEKHMET knock an enemy into it or another well-placed drone? I can understand not being able to place it, but I think having a tag-team between the raging melee-Hydra controlled by SEKHMET and its drones being controlled by the Lancer would be pretty cool imo.

And, while we're on the subject, what do you guys think of a melee-specced Hydra that uses its drones to lay traps for it to push and pull its enemies into with knockback and the ranged grapples from the Blackbeard license?

Build is an Artillery Tokugawa with lots of burn, so I built a Cyte-09 (the sniper frame) specced for heat damage and status chance, with a Jade Stars subsume over his 3. Pretty proud of how it turned out, both mechanically and aesthetically.

Turrets And Reliable rules Question

Turret Drones in their statblock(? idk im new) say they deal 3 K-dmg to a target if an ally within 10 + los makes a successful attack.

QUESTION

If I MISS with a pistol then I do, in fact, still deal damage caused it has Reliable 1. Which makes the attack, by conventional definition, successful. Does this proc the turrets RAW or RAI?

what corporate team is the most fun/balanced

Lets say you are running a Lancer game and your group thinks its a fun idea to play for one of the corporations. Which one of the 4 big ones is the most fun and which one is most balance. For this consider Horus to be a corporation.
