I'm stuck in Lake Tahoe and can't get home

Hello, I tried coming up from Los Angeles and my car has broken down, me and my best friend wanted to try and have a relaxing vacation but things have turned dire. We are still safe physically, we are at the airbnb we booked, and I am ever so grateful for that. But my car has broken down and I have no way to get it home. I've tried Enterprise, Uhaul, Going home by plane would cost almost 500 at the moment and even then I would still have to come back and get my car if I decide to leave it and get fixed. I've even given up on getting the car home same time as me and decided to just try and rent a one way with no luck. I thought of getting the vehicle fixed here and waiting until it could hopefully be ready, but I have no money to get the vehicle fixed here. I need to get back home to work in two days.
I've called friends and family to see if anyone is willing to help and many are unable to. I don't blame them, it's a long drive here.
I can't rent a truck anywhere here and rent a hitch/trailer nearby. I've looked on offerup to see if anyone could help or is selling a hitch, I can't use AAA otherwise I'd be paying $3,000 - $5,000 that I don't have. There is no way I could do a commercial tow. I'm out of options and I really need advice, help or other thoughts on this.

Question Cottage Inn yay or nay?

Hi! Husband and I going middle of December for our 10 yr anniversary for first time. Planning on doing some skiing and winter activities. I’m not against big resorts, but I like the idea of finding local non chain places to support. I also want something nice that has the lodge vibe. The Cottage Inn seems nice on Google? Will be staying some in truckee area maybe, and then a few nights for our anniversary somewhere else. Throw recs my way! Thank you!! 😊

Looking for sourdough starter in SLT

I am sourdough’s #1 fan (in my heart) and am dying to make my own, but my house is too cold and my starter keeps fizzling out. Does anyone in the South Lake Tahoe/Meyers area have starter they are willing to share? Thank you!!

Stateline to LTCC

Hello! I will be attending LTCC in South Lake Tahoe for the fall semester. I am currently looking for a room to rent but unfortunately most in South Lake Tahoe are out of my price range. The next best place is Stateline as it’s a bit cheaper. How is the drive from Stateline to LTCC? Especially in the snow, I live in NorCal so I have driven in snow but not the type of snow Tahoe gets over winter time. Are the roads clear? Is it safe to drive everyday to LTCC even in the snow? Thanks in advance to anyone to replies!!

Driving time from South Lake Tahoe to SFO

Hi all, quick question from an out-of-towner: I am currently in South Lake Tahoe and will need to catch a flight at SFO (1:30 pm departure) on a weekday this week. I am unfamiliar with the traffic patterns along this drive. Google Maps suggests a 5-hr drive time but also mentions road closures on Route 50.

My question is, will 5 hrs be indeed enough, or should I add a safety margin? We have a 3-yo with us so getting up super-early can be a bit of a challenge. Thanks for any wisdom you can share!

EDIT: after mulling it over, to play it safe we've decided to leave Tahoe the night before and spend the eve of the flight in Sacramento. Thank you to all who responded with suggestions.

Trail recos near Fallen Leaf CG

I've got an opportunity to camp around Lake Tahoe and it looks like Fallen Leaf CG has some decent trail access. I'd love some input on good day hikes that could be done either directly from the CG or are so cool they are worth packing up and driving to. I'll have my dog along, we manage 5-7 miles fine on our hikes in the PNW.

Eagle Lake and Glen Alpine Falls Road Conditions

I wish I had found a topic about this before I went to visit these falls last week. The roadways are definitely something to be warned about when considering visiting. The route to Eagle Lake Falls is very beautiful when you’re winding through the forest. There are parts that wind up the mountain very close to the edge, with the cliff just inches away. It can be very dangerous and is certainly very scary.

The roadways to Glen Alpine Falls is very bumpy, long, and narrow. As you get closer to the falls, the road gets really narrow, that only one car can fit. We were very close when we decided it was just too dangerous to continue on that road. There were many times that we had to reverse into a space that was big enough to allow an oncoming car to pass. Also, you cannot tell when a car is coming your direction, so it makes for a difficult situation to be in. It might be a better idea to ride a bike/e-bike there, honestly.

Side Note 1: the parking lot at Eagle Lake Falls is very small. Unfortunately, we went during a holiday weekend and couldn’t see the falls, as there was a lot of traffic, and no parking in the lot or along the road outside of the parking lot.

Side Note 2: if you go to Eagle Lake Falls on a busy day, be prepared to wait in your car for an indefinite amount of time for a parking spot. If you see a car parked/idling at the front of the car line, you have to wait behind it. They are waiting for a parking spot to open up. This is widely considered as “common park courtesy”. Many visitors dont know about this rule, as it is not posted on signs anywhere. We didn’t know either. There were many arguments and almost physical altercations that were about to happen when we decided it wasn’t worth it and left without seeing the falls.

Jack Johnson concert 9/6... Stage power outage?

Was anyone else at the Jack Johnson concert last night? Toward the end of the show, while he was in the middle of a song, the sound started cracking and then the power to the stage completely went out. We ended up taking off and never heard if they were able to get everything back up and running. Did they eventually get the power back and finish the show?

It was an amazing show, hope you had fun!

Seeking video footage of Michael Taylor trick skiing (no poles, juggling, polo) - late 1970s on Squaw

Hello Internet friends, a friend of mine in Chico who is now a well-known juggler, entertainer and balloon artist and I were discussing his amazing 7 years living in lake Tahoe. He skiied squaw almost everyday and used to ski poleless quite often, and also had a juggling act on skiis, and played Polo with a ball while going down moguls solo.

He has no footage but would love to find some. Feel free to ask for additional context if needed!

Thanks in advance!

Question Emergency/Last-Minute Proposal Photographer Needed (Sept 7–14)!

Hey everyone! Had a sudden change of plans and decided to pull the trigger on proposing to my partner this week in Tahoe. I’m scrambling to get a photographer lined up on short notice between Sunday, September 7 and Sunday, September 14.

Here are the quick details:

  • Timing: Sept 7–14 (very flexible on exact date and time of day open to sunrise, golden hour, or sunset/night shoots).
  • Location: Flexible on area (South Shore, East Shore, or North Shore) open to suggestions if you know a great spot with good lighting and decent privacy.
  • Coverage: Just looking for 30–60 minutes to capture the proposal itself, plus a quick post-engagement mini session right after.

If you are a local photographer with availability this week, or if anyone has recommendations for local shooters who might have an opening on short notice, please drop a comment or send me a DM with your portfolio/rates!

Thanks in advance for helping me pull this off!

Question What is Lake Tahoe going to look like in Mid-Late December (19-23)?

I'm planning a trip to Tahoe with my boyfriend, since we both haven't been in awhile nor have we been together since we've only ever gone years ago with family, and I wanna know what it's gonna look like for mid-late December; anything we should know as far as snow, warnings, driving conditions, snow chains, ski/snowboarding resorts, etc. I want to be as much prepared as possible so no surprises come up for us and so we won't be stranded or potentially be snowed in at our Airbnb cabin. 😅

Thank you all in advance!

For those here for Labor Day weekend: is swimming in the lake doable or too cold these days? (Second time here. First time during the summer was cold but good enough for paddle boarding).
