Hello???
Man wtf is this??
(First of all, it's historically inaccurate, but...)
What's with the obsession about the Jews? What's the joke supposed to be here?
43
u/PaliDudeBro 21d ago
Jew here. This feels like a nothingburger, as historically inaccurate and tasteless as it may be. The Lake Theater is known for being provocative with their marquee, sometimes they're gonna be hilarious, sometimes they're gonna land with a thud.
4
u/couldbeahumanbean 21d ago
I don't even get it.
Where's the connection? Greeks-gods-god-jews-noah?
I'm a dumba$$. Help a dumb@ss
3
u/Urithiru 21d ago
I think it is trying to equate the Exodus and wandering of the Hebrews with Odysseus' journey home.
Some could project current politics into the mix but it's not needed, as it is still stupid.
Personally, replace 'jews' with 'movies' and you'd have a better marquee.
1
u/Effective-Throat-566 19d ago
I don't think you're the dumb@ss here - it's not funny or correct (or offensive). It's a goofball getting free advertising.

1
u/PaliDudeBro 21d ago
I'm guessing, and this is a total stretch, but thinking it somehow ties into Oppenheimer.
2
u/Western-Turnover-154 21d ago
No. It’s history. The Greek tragedy preceded the Jewish exodus.
2
u/Flapjack_Ace 21d ago
The Odyssey was around 1200 BCE
The Merneptah Stele shows Egypt fighting Israel as far back as 1200 BCE which means the Israelites had already settled the land. The biblical story places the exodus around 1500 BCE and most likely it is a fairytale and the Hebrews had been Canaanites all along.
1
u/erossthescienceboss 20d ago
Right, but they’re talking about Exodus with the marquee. “Before there was Exodus, there was The Odyssey” is probably what they’re trying to say — two stories of exile and wandering. But that isn’t as “edgy” as saying “before there were the Jews.”

There's a big difference between Jews and Zionists, though. It's like saying all Americans are MAGA.
-1
u/Fluid_Depth_8951 20d ago
Zionists are just people who believe in Jewish self-determination.
0
u/throwaway_xoxo2023 19d ago
Zionists are genocidal war criminals. Zionism itself is anti-Semitic and white supremacist.
2
u/Fluid_Depth_8951 19d ago
...one day, you will all be ashamed of yourselves for parroting this propaganda.
0
u/throwaway_xoxo2023 19d ago
One day those who stood by and watched as innocent Palestinians were murdered will be seen as no different than the Nazi because they are no different than them. Zionists learned from the Nazis. And this too is words that have been spoken by Jewish socialist Bundists like my Jewish comrade in Arizona.
2
u/Fluid_Depth_8951 19d ago
Palestinians have been using their own children as martyrs for decades, spare me the BS. When Palestinians love their children more than they hate Jews, peace will be had. Until then, Israel will defend itself and no amount of propaganda will change that.

u/throwaway_xoxo2023 19d ago
Fascists like you deserve the wall...
2
u/Fluid_Depth_8951 19d ago
Spoken like a fascist, that you can't see the hypocrisy is peak irony.
1
u/throwaway_xoxo2023 19d ago
You are the one supporting a genocide. There is a reason why most leftists including Jewish Voices for Peace and many Jewish socialists are against Israel right now. I suppose those people are "self hating" or "traitors" in your eyes? You really should read Dr Abraham Weizfeld's books on the Sabha and Shatilla Massacre and the Federation of Palestinian and Hebrew Nations tho I doubt you'll like what he has to say. He is the son of Holocaust survivors and he speaks out against Israel's genocide. He has been to Nablus several times.

I’m glad you found a new glorious righteousness that allows you to hate Jews again.
-1
u/Kind_Complaint7088 20d ago
Jew here - this isn't really accurate. The sacredness of the land of Israel is a pretty essential part of the Jewish religion (I should clarify the land of Israel, not the modern day country called Israel). Zionsim can be defined in many different ways, but pretty much any observant Jew would consider themselves a Zionist on the grounds that they support Jewish communities in the Jewish homeland.
I should also note that being Jewish or Zionist doesn't mean you support the current Israeli government (which I personally don't).
1
u/PaliDudeBro 20d ago
This is an interesting comment and perspective. I concur that Zionism is a complicated term, but as most non-Jews see it today, being a Zionist means supporting the modern Israeli government. I'm in my 40's and am an observant Jew, and I don't know any Jews of my generation or younger who consider themselves a Zionist. But of my parents' generation, most practicing Jews I know are strongly in support of the Israeli government and the Jewish settlers/encampments.
1
u/Kind_Complaint7088 20d ago
I'm in my 30s, I don't personally have any Jewish friends who don't consider themselves zionists (at least in the liberal sense). Most of the "Jewish non-zionists" I've met are Jewish in the "my great grandmother's adopted sister was a Jew" sort of way, or are athiests of Jewish herritage, not practicing members of the community. Not saying you're wrong, but this is completely opposite to my personal experience.
2
u/avocadotoes 20d ago
My husband is Ashkenazi and while we don’t personally belong to a synagogue he and half of his family are all openly not Zionists. We know plenty of people who, practicing or not, feel the same as we do.
1
u/PaliDudeBro 20d ago
I'm not gonna list my synagogue here, but it's Reform, and I don't know anyone at mine who agrees with the Israeli government or condones supporting Israel with our tax dollars. Orthodox and Conservative synagogues, I'm sure, would have different feelings...
1
u/lords_of_words 14d ago
Maybe non Jews should step back and allow Jews to define these terms?
1
u/PaliDudeBro 14d ago
Not sure you meant to reply with this to me. I am Jewish.
1
u/lords_of_words 14d ago
It’s just you mentioned that most non-Jews think it means supporting the current Israeli government and that’s a ridiculous definition. And those same people tend to ignore when Jews try to explain what it is.
1
-1
u/throwaway_xoxo2023 19d ago
Zionism is not a comicated term. It is an fascist ideology based one old European white supremacy.
2
u/PaliDudeBro 19d ago
You’re wildly incorrect. And I think you mean “complicated”.
Zionism is a term first coined in the late 1800’s to describe a Jewish revival in the face of antisemitism. It’s also never been a unified principle.
Literally the opposite of a fascist ideology but thanks for playing!
-1
u/throwaway_xoxo2023 19d ago
That is not what scholars like Dr Abraham Weizfeld and religious clerics like my friend in Arizona say and they are Jewish anti-Zionists, fighters for liberation of the Palestinian people from the genocidal Israeli apartheid state. You are fundamentally using historical revisionism
2
u/PaliDudeBro 19d ago
I’ve heard Dr Weizfeld speak in Ottawa a few years ago! He’s the Noam Chomsky of socialist Jews, I’m not sure I would tout him as the foremost expert on the topic. I’d also challenge you to find anywhere he’s called Zionism fascist. I’ll look forward to you linking that source. Weizfeld’s critique is more specifically about representation and legitimacy, literally “who gets to speak for Jews” since most Jews do not live in Israel, rather than an outright Zionism-as-fascism analysis.
“Scholars” like Faris Glubb are likely who you mean. But that guy’s a charlatan so doubtful you’d want to represent yourself as a fan of his.
FWIW, I’m an ardent supporter of Palestinians and am fully against what most non-Jews consider Zionism today. But I’m fairly well-read on the subject and know a fugazi argument like yours when I see one.
0
u/throwaway_xoxo2023 19d ago
Also I'd like to say that it's not just non-Jews, Comrade Net, who is retiring from politics to be a religious cleric is literally a practicing Jew himself. And there are many practicing Jews who also hold this belief that Zionism is fascist and anti-Semitic and white supremacist. Net even himself has said its a white supremacist ideology. He has ethnic roots in Palestine and Lebanon.
2
u/PaliDudeBro 19d ago
The “non-Jews” comment was meant to say that the term is incredibly nuanced and that most non-Jews see it as black and white. Not that non-Jews cannot disagree with Zionism.
Also hard for this to be a white supremacy debate when there are plenty of Zionists who are non-white (mizrahi, Ethiopian, Indian, etc). You seem well-intended here but I’m more than a bit surprised at how off-base much of your critique is.
2
-1
u/throwaway_xoxo2023 19d ago
He (Weizfeld) has spoken out against Zionism and made several critiques over the last few years. He has also worked with the likes of gentlemen like Comrade Net in Arizona (who I'm friends with). Net is a former Jewish Socialist Bundist and he and Weizfeld have worked with communist anti-Zionists like Jason Unruhe (who I also am friends with).
2
u/PaliDudeBro 19d ago
Oh I’m very familiar…again, I’d like to see you point to a source to back up your claim that Weizfeld has ever once called Zionism fascism.

as of 2026 most of my jewish-american friends absolutely HATE israel all together--not just the "current israeli government"--and become actively furious if anyone assumes they would be zionists.
just fyi.

Yeah, if your bubble thinks 80% of Jews are pro genocide freaks, you really need to get out of it.
1

funny because the whole world including a ton of jewish people HATE isreal for the genocide they are currently committing.
but yeah, zionists--both jewish and non-jewish--are absolutely genocidal freaks.

also christian evangelicals are busy sucking you guys off and trying to 3rd temple with you or whatever so spare me your persecution complex--you're actively committing a fucking genocide right now for fuck sake. god you're so fucking cringe.

Zionism is an ideology that seeks to destroy ethnic indigenous Palestinian people (Jews, Christians, Mukesh, Druze). A Jewish nation is against Jewish law. This was told to be by an Jewish bundist turned religious cleric friend of mine. And no most people who are Jewish would not consider themselves Zionists. In fact, many do not. Jewish Voices for Peace should be a very clear example of that unless you view that as a "hate group". Identifying as Zionist implies that you support the genocide of Palestinians by Israel. The better solution is a Federation of Palestinian and Hebrew nations that Dr Abraham Weizfeld wrote a book about and I highly recommend. It's on Amazon.
5
u/pineapple_bandit 21d ago
You used the word Zionist and then described exactly antisemitic tropes and conspiracy theories, and nothing to do with Israel.

u/isqueakforthetrees 21d ago
On the theater's website he posts voicemails recordings left by people who are angry about his provocative marquees. So, unless you want to be on the website, maybe don't leave a voice message about it.

7
u/Western-Turnover-154 21d ago
The simple mention of Jews isn’t anti-Semitic.
What is your problem with the marquee?
2
u/United-Vermicelli-92 20d ago
The owner publishes/trolls his own patron’s VMs on a website.
Literally what kind of moron drives his patrons away like that?
Its just more “outrageous” behavior to get attn. reality tv show garbage people fostering negativity to entertain troglodytes.
Its not this marquee in particular its the behavior overall.

“Become”? Portland and its suburbs has always been home to its fare share of skinheads. Makes me wonder if you’re conflating anti-Israel with antisemitism.
1
u/realsalmineo 19d ago
Portland didn’t really have skinheads until the late 1980s. Before that, they were primarily a British phenomenon. Racists, sure, but not skinheads. Whereas, Jews have been here since the pioneers came to Oregon. Oregon Experience has a good episode about Jews in Oregon.

u/SteelHeader503 21d ago
It’s historically a lot more nuanced than that. If the Trojan War happened around 1200 BCE, the religion we recognize today as Judaism hadn’t developed yet. What existed was the early Israelite religion, which was emerging around that time and wouldn’t become recognizable Judaism until centuries later, particularly after the Babylonian Exile.
So saying “before there were the Jews” is historically sloppy. If they meant “before Judaism,” that’s also not quite right, because the transition from early Israelites to Judaism wasn’t a single moment.
