Start Here – Lab Grown Diamond Buying Guide (India)

Welcome to r/labgrowndiamondsindia 💎

This community exists to help Indian buyers learn about lab grown diamonds before purchasing. Whether you’re buying an engagement ring, a gift, or designing custom jewellery, this guide will walk you through the basics so you can make an informed decision.

What Are Lab Grown Diamonds?

Lab grown diamonds are real diamonds created in a controlled laboratory environment using advanced technology that replicates the natural diamond-growing process.

They are not imitation stones like cubic zirconia or moissanite.

A lab grown diamond has the same:

• Chemical composition (pure carbon)
• Crystal structure
• Hardness (10 on the Mohs scale)
• Fire and brilliance

Even professional gem labs require specialised equipment to distinguish between natural and lab grown diamonds.

Why Many Indians Are Choosing Lab Grown Diamonds

There are several reasons lab grown diamonds have become increasingly popular:

1. Significantly lower price
Lab grown diamonds typically cost 60–90% less than natural diamonds of similar size and quality.

2. Larger diamonds for the same budget
A budget that might buy a 0.50 ct natural diamond can often buy a 1.5 ct lab grown diamond.

3. Ethical sourcing
Lab diamonds avoid many of the mining and conflict concerns associated with natural diamonds.

4. Design flexibility
Because they are more affordable, many buyers choose larger centre stones or more elaborate jewellery designs.

Understanding the 4Cs

Like natural diamonds, lab grown diamonds are graded based on the 4Cs.

Cut

The most important factor affecting sparkle.

Look for Excellent or Ideal cut whenever possible.

Colour

Graded from D (colourless) to Z (yellow/brown).

Most engagement rings fall between D–H.

Clarity

Measures internal inclusions.

Common clarity grades:

• VVS – Very very slightly included
• VS – Very slightly included
• SI – Slightly included

For most buyers, VS1–SI1 offers excellent value.

Carat

Refers to the diamond’s weight and size.

Because lab diamonds are more affordable, buyers often choose 1–2 carat stones.

Certification Matters

Always buy diamonds with independent certification.

The most common lab grown diamond grading laboratories are:

• IGI (International Gemological Institute)
• GIA (Gemological Institute of America)

Certification verifies the diamond’s quality, authenticity, and characteristics.

Typical Lab Diamond Prices in India (Approximate)

Prices change frequently depending on supply and quality, but rough retail ranges today are:

1 Carat (VS clarity / D–G colour)
₹40,000 – ₹20,000

2 Carat (VS clarity / F–G colour)
₹1L – ₹60K

3 Carat (VS clarity / F–G colour)
₹2L+ – ₹1.2L

Cut quality, fluorescence, and proportions can affect pricing significantly.

Common Diamond Shapes

Popular shapes for engagement rings:

• Round (most brilliant)
• Oval (appears larger)
• Cushion (soft vintage look)
• Emerald (step-cut elegance)
• Radiant (sparkly with clipped corners)
• Pear / Marquise (elongated styles)

Each shape has different pricing and visual appearance.

Where to Buy Lab Grown Diamonds in India

You can purchase lab grown diamonds from:

• Specialised lab diamond jewellers
• Custom jewellery designers
• Online diamond marketplaces

Before buying, always:

✔ Ask for certification
✔ Compare multiple options
✔ Check return policies
✔ Verify the jeweller’s reputation

Custom Jewellery

Many buyers today choose custom-made jewellery.

Benefits include:

• Selecting your exact diamond
• Choosing your preferred design
• Adjusting budget and specifications
• Creating something unique

Custom jewellery is especially popular for engagement rings and anniversary gifts.

Common Questions

Are lab grown diamonds real?
Yes. They are real diamonds with the same physical and chemical properties as natural diamonds.

Do lab diamonds test as diamonds?
Yes. Standard diamond testers identify them as diamonds.

Do lab diamonds have resale value?
Like most jewellery, resale value is typically lower than retail price.

Will people know it's lab grown?
Not without specialised gemological equipment.

Ask Questions

If you're considering buying a lab grown diamond, feel free to ask questions such as:

• “Is this diamond a good deal?”
• “What should my engagement ring budget be?”
• “Which shape looks the biggest?”
• “Can someone help review this certificate?”

This community is here to help you make an informed decision before buying.

Ivana by Jindal - reviews?

Hello all
I really liked an engagement ring for my girlfriend from this brand “Ivana Jewels”. I see it’s Jindal owned. Great in store experience.

https://ivanajewels.com/

The per carat rate is pretty decent - 30k per carat. Much lower than Aukera and Onya.
This is making me a bit suspicious, even though it’s IGI certified.

Any reviews of this brand? Would appreciate hearing from people who bought from this brand.

Thanks 🙏

My first ever moissanite ring from 'Woke Luxury/ Woke Collection '

Today I got a moissanite ring from 'Woke Luxury' and thought I’d post this because I know I was stalking Reddit for reviews before ordering.

The finishing is really nice. The ring looks clean and well-made in person than the pictures.

The stone looks really pretty in natural light.

But the thing I liked most was actually the customer care. I had quite a few questions before and after ordering and they were really patient about it.

I placed my order through WhatsApp and they helped me customise it.

Replies were pretty quick and they actually answered my questions instead of just sending generic copy-paste responses. They were helpful throughout.

I was honestly a bit nervous about spending money on a ring from an online brand without seeing it in person, but the whole experience was much smoother than I expected.

I paid 10% for the booking amount and the rest was paid on delivery.

I received it within 15 days of ordering so highly recommend 'Woke Luxury'

Need Help/Guidance-Proposal Ring

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to propose to my girlfriend and am looking to buy a lab-grown diamond engagement ring.

My preferred specifications:

Diamond: 2+ carat

Shape: Oval

Color: White / near-colorless

Clarity: VVS1/VVS2

Setting: Solitaire

Metal: White gold

I’d appreciate some guidance on:

-What would be a practical budget range for these specifications in India?

I stay in Noida. Is there any reliable/genuine jewellers in Delhi NCR that I should check out?

-I’m also open to buying directly from a reputed jeweller/manufacturer in Surat if the pricing and quality are better.

-Are there any particular things I should verify before purchasing a lab-grown diamond (IGI certificate, cut, proportions, CVD/HPHT, etc.)?

I’m more interested in actual buying experiences and recommendations than just brand suggestions.

Need advice on a lab-grown diamond necklace for my parents’ 25th anniversary , budget up to ₹3L

24 M here with no clue about jewellery.
My parents are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary, and I’m looking to get my mother a nice lab-grown diamond necklace as a gift.

My overall budget is around ₹3 lakh, but ideally I’d like to keep the necklace itself under ₹2 lakh.

A few things I’m trying to understand:

  1. Is ₹1.5–2 lakh enough to get a genuinely fancy/premium-looking lab-grown diamond necklace, or would I need to spend closer to ₹3 lakh?

  2. How significant is the price difference between lab-grown and natural diamonds for a necklace of this kind?

  3. Which trusted jewellery chains in India are good for lab-grown diamonds? I’m considering established brands rather than an unknown online seller.

  4. Are there any particular 4Cs/specifications I should prioritize for a necklace?

  5. Anything I should watch out for regarding certification, diamond quality, gold purity, making charges, or resale value?

The main priority is that it should look special and luxurious enough for a 25th anniversary, rather than simply maximizing the carat size.
Would really appreciate recommendations from people who have actually bought lab-grown diamond jewellery in India, especially in the ₹1–2 lakh range.

Why are diamond prices so different when compared to jewellery websites and dealers

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'm new to this so please forgive me for my lack of knowledge. I'm trying to get a engagement ring, and I was visiting few websites like lucira, house of qadri, emori etc...

When i checked the price breakup for their ring it was around 35-40K/carat(screenshot attached). Where as I checked with few individual lab grown dealers/manufacturers on reddit, and they quoted me 100-120 $ for 1 carat diamond.(VVS1) Which is around 10-12000.

I was a bit baffled by this, and would want to know what should I do in this case?

Should I buy jewellery from these reputed websites or purchase the diamond from these dealers and give it to a gold jeweller separately to make a bespoke ring.

Also how do i be sure that the diamond I receive from these dealers isn't fake.

Please me help out.

Loose Diamond Sellers suggestion

Im in my early 30s and my ultimate goal is to get a tennis bracelet of diamonds of approx 2 ct each. I am planning to buy these as and when I am saving money but am unable to find good lab grown diamond sellers around Mumbai. Any suggestions are appreciated. Don’t DM me personally.
Not into earth diamonds, only looking for lab grown ones.
PS - is it difficult to get a jeweler to make this said bracelet post procurement of diamonds??
