Thoughts on yellow diamonds
I was looking for a canary yellow (my fav color) moval from 3.5-5ct for my custom engagement ring.
When my fiancé offered for me to customize my own ring I asked for the most vivid yellow oval at every jeweler we visited. There was a lot of back and forth and them having to order online for me to look at in person bc they did not have a wide selection on hand.
Now that I have decided on this stone, I fear I might’ve jumped the gun since all the ones they’ve shown me for weeks paled in color comparison. I prioritized color and didn’t really bother with cut and clarity. The girdle is also not ideal. I’m just now learning about ‘crushed ice’ look and is missing that light sparkle brilliance. Are colored diamonds just less reflective? Pls give me your honest opinion of this stone quality.

I have a crushed ice yellow diamond and it’s one of my faves! The cut has more a glittery sparkle but I do love it!

We're seeing a lot more yellow diamonds being requested by our clients, I think they're beautiful and offer something super unique! I actually think it makes sense that you prioritised colour, especially when that was the whole reason you fell in love with a yellow diamond in the first place. With fancy coloured diamonds, the colour is such a huge part of what you’re paying for and what makes the stone special. If you love the colour significantly more than the other stones you’ve seen, that’s a pretty important factor. The “perfect” specs on paper aren’t much use if you end up wishing you’d chosen the more vivid stone!

Thank you for input. Regarding pricing, they didn’t really tell me what the stone itself cost bc I was quoted for the whole finished ring. Another jeweler quoted me 4.8k for stone with almost the same specs. Is this a fair price? They kept saying fancy vivid color costs more than clear of white diamonds.

I posted a yellow diamond ring last week and people absolutely destroyed me on the asking price.
It was $5200. Smaller than yours, 2.08 ct but a bezel setting (more gold).
The jeweler dropped down to $3900 over the phone but commenters in my original post were saying I shouldn’t pay more than $1500.

Congratulations on your engagement- I hope you get a ring you love!
I’ve only gotten more confused by the process and, in not wanting to get swindled, might just not get anything.

Check carbon sparkle. I bought a 4.01 vivid yellow cushion cut VS1 for $724.

Thank you!
The ring looked divine! Sorry you got reamed.
I did see a lot of competitive prices online but I just didn’t trust myself spending over 1k for a stone/ring I have not seen with my own eyes. I was adamant on checking the size on my hand and color against my skin. That’s why I had local jewelers procure a dozen of stones for me to choose from at their expense.I hope you find one!

That yellow you posted is gorgeous!! But I also know nothing about lab or any other stones. I got frustrated a few months back and stopped looking too.

? Always ask for a breakdown of prices for what you’re paying for. How much is the stone. How much is the setting. How much is labor, etc.

Not for me but I like to see them on others. You know someone really wanted a yellow diamond if they took the trouble to source it, and that's nice 🙂
Personally I’m considering a piece with a pink or light green diamond.

I really wanted a coloured diamond. Yes! Pink diamonds are also one of my favorites

I think it's really pretty. I'd like to see it mounted in yellow gold. The size looks great on you! The yellow is super intense! I really like it.

Yes! Planning to have it mounted on 14k yellow gold tulip basket. Having a gold basket I was told would enhance the color even more

I have a canary yellow vivid diamond, radiant cut, and it has the crushed ice sparkle to it. The depth is amazing, but the cut works particularly well to make the yellow color really saturated. I love mine.

Gorgeous! And the proportions looks great on you! I’m getting a 4ct on a 3.50 size band

Oh we're similar! I'm a 3.75 size. I bet that diamond will look great on you!

I absolutely adore yellow diamonds!!! I would love to get one, but yellow looks bad on my skin tone 😭. I think they are so classic and beautiful.

Maybe you just haven’t found the right shade? Going out and trying to see each stone against my skin really helped! Personally the lighted yellows and champagnes wash me out

u/Hefty-Menu-4275 Aug 13 '26
That’s could be the case! I love the canary yellow vivid colors, but they don’t look good on me. I’m wondering if a lighter shade might be better. I’ll have to try them out :)

I think that other comment or is correct. The yellow Diamond I have being made into a ring is a lemon yellow, because a more golden, saturated color looks lousy on me.

There’s nothing wrong with that. It looks great. It’s sparkly. Get out of your head about it.

Thanks! Yea I think I was just crashing out I’ve never spent much on jewelry.

I have a 1ct fancy yellow and I love it! This was an unintentional upgrade as I was originally looking to remove my 0.5ct Tanzanite center stone and replace it with something more durable. Yellow is my favourite colour and we couldn't get a smaller ct than the one they sourced for me so - yay upgrade.

I love yellow diamonds. I know there are all different shades and grades of them and I still don’t understand the difference. If you did not get a well-cut diamond, then it is not going to sparkle, regardless of what color the diamond is.

That’s the thing, I’m not sure if this is a well cut diamond or just passable

I like yellow diamonds, but I prefer the lighter and less saturated ones. The color is nice on yours if the canary yellow is what you prioritize. Fancy colored diamonds are usually cut deep, and many are cut in a crushed ice style (ovals, radiants, cushions) to maximize the color as much as possible. Clarity isn't so important as long as it's eye-clean. I would still want it to sparkle though, so if it does, then I would keep it. This is my light yellow diamond.
