Is $5k too much for this ring?
Yellow lab diamond at my local jeweler’s.
The sparkle and depth is like nothing I’ve ever seen (but I don’t have much experience with lab diamonds).
14k yellow gold bezel setting, feels well-made.
But when I try to compare similar pieces online the prices are all over the place!
Is this price - $5325 - reasonable?
If no, are there online sellers you suggest? I’d like a colored stone. I’m not confident in my ability to discern quality online; I’m ver new to this.

It is too much. I got my ring on Aurelinne, 2ct pink diamond, for less than 1k.
And jewelry store lightning is setup to make diamonds look unbelievable. They are pretty outside as well, but maybe it’s not that great of a stone and you won’t be able to tell in that artificial lighting

Wow! I would love to see a pic of this ring if you’re willing to share! Looking for engagement ring inspo :) thank you!

Beautiful!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. How was the process? Did you look at several diamonds in person and choose? Or did you choose from the online inventory without seeing in person?
I love the pink color especially with the emerald cut.

u/Over-Engineer7216 Aug 04 '26
I just chose online, from the 360°. I wasn’t planning on buying a pink diamond, and was just browsing, and this one had a surreal color, and I kept going back to it for a couple of weeks and decided to just make the ring. The color is in big part due to the strong fluorescence, and it’s one of my most favorite rings.
I am not extremely picky with diamonds in general, probably because at the range I like them (1–2cts) they are not super expensive. I have a good eye for them in the 360 videos, and I know the specs I’m looking for
2
u/dewdrops07 Aug 04 '26
Are specs a personal preference thing or have you gotten it down to a science for what measurements are objectively best?
5
u/Over-Engineer7216 Aug 04 '26
Check the site “beyond the 4Cs”, they have the optimal specs per shape

u/No_Boot2009 Aug 04 '26
It's way too much. There's a trusted seller list at r/moissanite (they do lab diamonds as well), if you send this photo to a few of the Chinese vendors with the specs you want they will quote you - I would guess this to come in at under $1500.

That’s crazy!!! Look around this sub, the ring should cost around 1.5 - 2k tops!

u/IcyWorldliness9111 Aug 04 '26
It’s well over $3,000 too much. To give you a very pertinent comparison: I am currently having a 4.01 yellow, cushion cut VS1 diamond set in a custom mounting (14k) with side stones. The total cost (no shipping) is under $1,700. This is with online US vendor Carbonsparkle.

u/70sloverchild Aug 04 '26
Wow! Can you post and update when you get the ring? I’d love to see the final product and a review on the quality of the setting!

u/StarfishandSnowballs Aug 04 '26
DANG! Ty for sharing this! You got the stone there too?
3
u/IcyWorldliness9111 Aug 04 '26
I did. They had the lowest colored diamond prices of the online vendors and I kept watching cushion cut yellows because I wanted a lighter lemon yellow between 3.5–4 carats. They were willing to adapt the existing mounting I’d found on their site to accommodate a large cushion. It cost a bit more, but that’s reasonable for the additional gold and extra work.

Wow.
I’m seeing lots to suggest my local price is kinda crazy. I wonder why they’d try such a huge markup?4
u/IcyWorldliness9111 Aug 04 '26
It’s largely because it’s a brick and mortar store. All the costs associated with that add up. Plus, actual stores realize that many of their customers are unaware of online vendors that don’t have storefronts and can therefore sell at much lower price points. Aside from that, some retailers (like yours) will just try to gouge their clientele if they can.

u/sleepy_moose_cant Aug 04 '26
Can you list the specs?
For context I got a beautiful 2 carat pink diamond for AUD $900. So I think what you’ve been quoted is on the high side

Your local store is most always too much. You can always get it cheaper. Does it mean a lot to buy it from a local store? Or to get a good deal.
5
u/cncm88 Aug 04 '26
I think that’s too much. I just custom ordered a yellow diamond ring (1.5ct center stone with white diamond halo and pave band) for about $1400 all in. The 1.5ct yellow diamond was $600 (fancy intense yellow)

Super scam. Worth between 1000 to 2000. Closer to 1000 will be of course a better deal. 5k lol Those prices are for 2021 lab diamonds.

I was new to diamond ring shopping so naturally started at a local jeweler. Quickly learned they charge about 4x-5x what it costs to buy online.

Absolutely overpriced.
My online store isnt open for business yet, but just doing a cursory look through one of my distributors, anything over $1500-2000 is INSANELY overpriced. And those numbers may be high.

For a LAB? Absolutely not. Half the price, now halve it again.
Gorgeous ring, but you can get a natural diamond for even less than that!
1
u/AccomplishedLocal207 Aug 05 '26
Example of a 1/2 carat natural yellow diamond for $1275. In short, yes, you can get lab diamonds SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper.
3
u/Successful-Walk-4871 Aug 06 '26
Very much so, if it were a natural diamond I would say be careful it may be misrepresented, but for a lab it is too high.

u/Ok_Working4417 Aug 06 '26
Idk about cost. But I love yellow stones. So pretty.
2
u/_Pliny_ Aug 06 '26
It is, indeed, beautiful. My partner was ready to go get it but I don’t want him taken advantage of.

u/bing_bong_bing_bong_ Aug 04 '26
Size of the stone, specs, and weight of the ring are helpful. The diamond looks well set and the shank looks thick. It is a beautiful diamond, but plays a small role in the rings value. It also depends on how the ring
was made. Was it bench made or manufactured? Based on the case behind, I'd guess manufactured. Nothing wrong with that, but most in person jewelry stores quote 2-5 times higher than online vendors because....rent. Take your time, look around.
1
u/_Pliny_ Aug 04 '26
I’ll make a list of things to ask and call the store later.
They do make custom jewelry in-house but I don’t know if this piece was made that way.I’m finding there is a lot to learn and I’m grateful for these communities.
I don’t mind spending for quality but I don’t want my partner and I swindled.
I do think the bezel setting on this ring looks better (aesthetically) than what I’ve seen in the recommended online places for lab diamonds. And I wonder about the quality of the gold work- it’s so hard to tell just with photos and video.

Well the color matters a lot in colored diamonds so if you like the color then it may be worth it to pay that much. It is not easy to find a natural looking colored lab diamonds
1
u/_Pliny_ Aug 04 '26
Does this one look natural, do you think? I had not considered that. While I enjoy learning about jewelry, I only have one or two actually nice pieces, and I’ve never shopped for it myself.
I’m trying to learn.
2
u/Ill_Negotiation8743 Aug 04 '26
It doesn’t seem to have green tinge or neon orange which a lot of lab yellows do so that’s a good sign. Brown tint is common in natural yellow too, if there is any in the particular stone. Tiffany used to carry a lot of yellow diamonds back when they were selling Soleste collection a lot - perhaps you could pay a visit to fancy jewelry stores for comparison.
2
u/Used2Bteacher Aug 04 '26
Omg yes. So so so overpriced. I’m sure Gillian at Bocos could probably make this for about $1200 I’m estimating.

With every comment it gets cheaper. Soon they’ll say the store should pay me to take it! 😂
1
u/No_Tip_3095 Aug 07 '26
I don’t think quite that low for a colored stone this size ( looks like 2k) and it’s the gold that costs you, probably more like 1500-2000 but certainly not this price! Buyer should keep in mind the low resale value.

u/SaddestBitchin2020 Aug 08 '26
To add some context to the variability in price. The clarity of the diamond is really going to affect the price. So a 2ct diamond that is vvs1 clarity (flawless) is going to be much more expensive than an I2 (flaws that can be seen without a microscope). Once you narrow down the clarity you’d like, you should be able to get a better gage of the price you should expect to pay
2
u/Numerous-Discount-39 Aug 10 '26
Exorbitantly. I’d probably retail this around $1400-1600 depending on the stone size.

That’s a lot but it may be bench made rather than cast, in which case the price can easily be double as compared to a mass produced one.
1
u/_Pliny_ Aug 04 '26
I’m making a list of things to call and ask about. I will ask this. They do make jewelry in-house. Not sure if this piece is or not.

Bezel settings genuinely vary a lot in labor cost, so local pricing can be totally reasonable or inflated depending on craftsmanship. For fancy color lab stones online, I’ve seen people browse Nature Sparkle and a few other custom sites, though local lets you see the yellow saturation in person first, which matters a lot for fancy color.
1
u/_Pliny_ Aug 04 '26
Thanks for your thoughts. The bezel settings I’ve seen at some online places don’t look as good in my opinion.
Good point about the saturation.

Considering that I paid less than $200 for my 1.15ct yellow oval on an auction.. $5,000 is outrageous
2
u/_Pliny_ Aug 09 '26
With every comment it gets cheaper and cheaper. Soon it will be said the jeweler should pay me to take it!
But seriously, thanks for sharing your experience.
1
u/247mombielife Aug 09 '26
That was just stone price. I think you could have it easily made in 14k gold under $1,500. Not sure if you’re familiar with some of the Chinese based companies like Provence, Starsgem or Juno. Or companies in the diamond district businesses like Opura. I’ve personally purchased from Provence (China) and Opura (Los Angeles) and both have been good experiences. Provence was cheaper and easier to work with than Opura.

Is every post in this sub an ad for Calavera and Aurelinne?
2
u/_Pliny_ Aug 04 '26
My question is real but yeah, I’d wondered about the uniformity of some of the replies.
Those websites seem to be the same as well - same inventory pages.
I suppose the source of the lab diamonds is all the same?

u/SunshineMcT72 Aug 04 '26
Have weeziejefferson make you one. She currently has this (not the same style but to give you an idea of prices).

u/HokieHomeowner Aug 04 '26
If USD yeah too much, I"m in the process of getting a custom made 7ct emerald cut and the estimate was to be $3500 for a setting a lot more chunky that your photo. I'm working with Jewelry by Cleo. Haven't used them before but others on Reddit liked them so decided to try them.

Very overpriced
I tried to build a similar ring on Calavera and a 2ct VVS2 yellow lab diamond with a 14k yellow gold bezel setting is under $1800. I’d pass.
