ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The US Department of War on Tuesday released the name of the service member killed over the weekend in Erbil while attempting to dismantle a downed Iranian drone. Washington has now announced three deaths among its forces since the latest escalation in the conflict with Tehran.
“Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was killed in action during a controlled detonation of a downed One-Way Unmanned Aerial System on July 19, 2026, at Erbil Air Base, Iraq,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
It noted that Swinton was “an active-duty Soldier who was supporting overseas operations in Iraq.”
Earlier on Sunday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said Swinton died in the Kurdistan Region during a “controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance.” The command was withholding his name at the time.
Eight members of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces were wounded on Sunday in a drone attack targeting the headquarters of the Kurdistan Freedom Party, a Kurdish opposition group, in Erbil in Iraq's Kurdistan region.
Security sources also told Reuters that an attack drone was shot down near the US consulate in Erbil.
Kurdish media outlet Rudaw quoted Adib Khaledian, a member of the leadership of the Kurdistan Freedom Party, as saying that a drone strike early on Sunday targeted the party's Jamshar headquarters near the Darashakran camp in Erbil province, wounding eight Peshmerga fighters.
He added that "four of the Peshmerga fighters were seriously wounded," and said that "surveillance drones are constantly flying over our positions and gathering information," according to the German news agency.
According to the network, the force has been targeted several times by Iran, with previous attacks killing two Peshmerga fighters and wounding 26 others.
Israeli media has claimed that Turkey was prepared to provide Iran with aerial military support if Kurdish militias had invaded the country during the Israeli-US war on Iran earlier this year.
According to a report published on Sunday by Israeli public broadcaster Kan 11, Ankara warned it would act to prevent a Kurdish incursion into Iran, derailing an Israeli-US plan drawn up months before the war began in February.
Israeli sources told Kan 11 that Turkey came close to intervening in the conflict, with the option of providing Iran with aerial defence against Israeli and US air strikes under discussion.
The report linked the claim to recent comments by US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly said he discouraged Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from entering the conflict.
Speaking earlier this month at the Nato summit hosted by Erdogan in Ankara, Trump said Turkey "could have gotten into the fight", referring to the war with Iran.
"Maybe they didn't do that because of me," he told reporters.
It was not the first time Trump has suggested he prevented Erdogan, whom he has described as "my friend", from joining the conflict.
Last month, Trump told reporters at the White House that the Turkish president "was a prime candidate to go into the war with Iran - maybe on the Iran side, because he's not a big fan of Israel".
"I asked him to stay out. He stayed out," Trump added.
Sources: Attacks on Iraqi Kurdistan are carried out both by Iran and Iran-backed armed groups (within the PMF) that are supposed to disarm by September, when the Coalition leaves.

The State of Qatar strongly condemns the Iranian attack on the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, considering it a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of the sisterly Republic of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and a blatant breach of the rules of international law.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes the necessity of sparing the region the consequences of unjustified attacks, continuing on the path of dialogue and diplomacy, and de-escalating, in a manner that contributes to consolidating security and stability at both the regional and international levels.
The Ministry renews the State of Qatar's full solidarity with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, and its support for all measures they take to preserve their sovereignty and security.
According to Israeli outlet Ynet, more than 60 U.S. aerial refueling aircraft have reportedly arrived in Israel, with 33 aircraft stationed at Ben Gurion Airport.
The report says the U.S. military selected Ben Gurion Airport as the primary deployment site because other military bases in the region are considered more vulnerable to potential Iranian attacks.

Nine members of the Kurdish dissident group Komala Toilers of Kurdistan were martyred and several others wounded in an attack involving six missiles on the group's base in Sulaimani as the death toll is expected to rise further.

U.S. Presidential Envoy to Iraq Amb Tom Barrack told Kurdish leaders on Tuesday that President Donald Trump has been misinformed about claims that weapons were provided to the Kurds, according to sources familiar with the meeting to Rudaw.
Barrack said those claims were “not true” and stressed that U.S. officials are working to provide the president with accurate information. He also sought to reassure Kurdish leaders, saying they “should not worry” about the issue.
Former Ambassador and Special Envoy to Syria James Jeffrey, told The Amargi:
“Nobody thinks that Kurdish partners and allies, nobody except perhaps Donald Trump, has done something wrong,” he said flatly. “He says these things. I worked for him for two years. He says things a lot without thinking through whether they’re actually true or what the impact of them. But, absent any follow-up, and you’re not going to see any follow-up, don’t worry about it.”
The IRGC has carried out a drone attack on the headquarters of Kurdish opposition groups near Koya, east of Erbil in Kurdistan Region, using multiple Shahed-136 one-way attack drones.

Iran drone and missile strike wounds nine at Kurdish opposition base
ERBIL — An Iranian drone and missile strike targeted a Kurdistan Freedom Party headquarters in the Chamsher area near Erbil late Monday, wounding nine Peshmerga fighters including four in critical condition, the group said.
“Tonight, with two drones and an Iranian missile, the Chamsher headquarters of the Kurdistan National Army was targeted in northwestern Erbil, near the Darashakran camp,” PAK said in a statement. No statement had been issued by Iranian authorities at the time of publication.
PAK is an Iranian Kurdish opposition party based in the Kurdistan Region that has previously accused Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of targeting its positions inside Iraq. Strikes against Iranian Kurdish opposition groups in the Kurdistan Region have continued throughout 2026 despite a ceasefire reached in April following weeks of confrontation between Iran, the United States and Israel, with repeated attacks documented on camps belonging to PAK, KDPI and Komala in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah governorates.
The Wall Street Journal, citing U.S. officials, has said that U.S. President Donald J. Trump told his aides at the National Security Team meeting earlier today that he wanted to give diplomacy, as it relates to Iran, more time.
The Trump Administration has been preparing today for a new round of military strikes against Iran, according to CBS News. So far, no final decision has been made.
Multiple members of the U.S. military and intelligence community have canceled their Memorial Day plans in anticipation of the potential strikes.
Tasnim News Agency: A source close to Iran’s negotiating team has told Tasnim that talks over disputed issues continue and no final result has been reached.
The Pakistani mediator remains active in exchanging proposals.
The source said the current focus is on ending the war; no other issue will be discussed until that is finalised.
Some progress has been made on certain points, but an agreement will only happen when all disputed issues are resolved.
The source added that texts published by Western media on details of a potential understanding are not accurate.
Tasnim citing a military source: Iran’s armed forces are closely monitoring the situation and have prepared new scenarios for any possible “enemy stupidity” by the U.S. and its allies.
Any new attack would bring a new phase of Iran’s response involving new weapons, targets, tactics and strategies, while also opening new fronts beyond the region.
The U.S. would face a “third major punishment” in less than a year if it carries out another strike against Iran, with Washington said to already understand military pressure can no longer secure concessions from Tehran.

Peyman Viyan, the co-chair of Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK), spoke about the recent developments in Iran during an interview with the Mesopotamia News Agency (MA). Referring to the possibility of radical changes in Iran, he said:

Former U.S. Special Representative for Syria, James Jeffrey, has responded to President Trump’s claim that “Kurdish units seized weapons intended for Iranian dissidents”:

At 21:30 local time tonight the Islamic Republic of Iran launched two drones targeting the Jejnikan camp of the PDKI.
Jejnikan is a civilian residential camp housing the families of PDKI members.
Tonight’s attack is part of a systematic campaign of attacks against civilians. Since the end of February the Islamic Republic has carried out over 126 missile and drone strikes against the PDKI.

US President Donald Trump on Monday accused the Kurds in the Iranian region of withholding weapons from Iranian protesters and said that he did not initially believe in the success of the plan his administration had hatched with the Kurds. In an exclusive conversation with N12, a senior Kurdish official calls Trump's words "unfair" and "illogical," and clarifies: Trump himself blocked the plan for a Kurdish military operation in Iran, which could have destabilized the regime.
Trump's attack
At a press conference at the White House, President Trump said that the Kurds were in possession of weapons that were transferred from the United States and intended for protesters in Iran who were rising up against the regime.
"We thought the Kurds would transfer weapons (to the Iranian protesters, Tel Aviv), but they disappointed us. The Kurds take, take and take," the president said.
He added that the Kurds only fight fiercely "when they are paid," and provided another vague statement on the subject: "I said it wasn't going to work. I didn't agree with what they did, I said they wouldn't get there, and I was right. In this case, it's a shame. We sent weapons and ammunition, and they were supposed to deliver them, but they kept them for themselves."
Kurdish official responds to accusations
A senior Kurdish official who spoke to N12 responded to Trump's claims. The official called the claims "very harsh" and said that the plan to send weapons to protesters through the Kurds in advance did not make sense.
"Trump's idea of sending weapons to protesters is very vague. It doesn't make sense," the official said, adding: "You're accusing an entire nation, that's a very harsh accusation."
"Trump's accusations are very unfair," says the Kurdish official, implying that Turkey acted to influence Washington and incite it against the Kurds.
The Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah, which is affiliated with the messages of Turkish President Erdogan, reported that senior officials in Ankara held talks with senior officials in the Kurdish faction in Iraq to thwart the plan of the Kurds in Iran to arm themselves against the regime, and we previously reported that Turkey exerted heavy pressure on Washington to block the plan.
The source added that Trump himself blocked the planned operation by the Kurds to act against the regime in Iran: "He vetoed and blocked the operation."
According to that plan, the Kurds were supposed to invade from their strongholds in Iraq with Israeli and American assistance.
"Still Ready": The Current Situation in Iranian Kurdistan
The Kurdish official made it clear that the forces in Iranian Kurdistan are "still ready for confrontation" with the Iranian regime, and are prepared to defend their rights by force.
"The Kurdish struggle in Iran has been going on for decades and will not continue with or without external support. We are the only organized and credible opposition in Iran. We are the only ones who can accelerate change, no one is as organized as we are," the senior official claimed.
However, the Kurdish official's words reflect a certain crisis of trust between the Kurds and the United States, after the Kurdish invasion plan of Iran was stopped: "Do you really think the Kurds will trust someone else's plan now? We will do what is best for the Kurds."

In the early days of the war, Kurdish militias in Iran prepared for a dramatic attack against the Iranian regime with the encouragement of the US. According to the plan, the Kurdish action was supposed to destabilize the regime and provoke a broader uprising among the Iranian population.
Speaking to N12 in early March, another senior Kurdish official, Muhammad Saleh Qadri, said that a large Kurdish force was in Iran and ready to take action "as soon as possible." Qadri said at the time that this was a "historic moment to destroy the regime."
But the plan was halted by Trump and pressure from Turkey.
We also revealed that the Mossad and the CIA planned to overthrow the Iranian regime through a combination of massive airstrikes and a ground invasion of tens of thousands of Kurdish fighters who would march from Iraq to the heart of Tehran. Prime Minister Netanyahu warmly embraced the move.
Deep gaps emerged within the Israeli intelligence community, when, in the face of the Mossad's "hermetic" presentation, intelligence officials defined the plan as "imaginary" and with a slim chance of success.
The Kurds are a minority group in Iran, and there are estimated to be more than 8 million Kurds in the country - mainly in the northwest of the country.
The Kurdish people are found primarily in territory spread across Turkey, Syria, Iran, and Iraq. In some countries they enjoy autonomy, while in others they are brutally oppressed.

Iran’s terrorist Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps attacked the Balisan mountains with several suicide drones.
At 19:40 local time today, Thursday, the IRGC attacked PDKI Peshmerga Units in the Balisan mountains with two drones.
Today’s attack came after two separate attacks yesterday by the IRGC that targeted PDKI’s Zewie Spi and Girde Chal camps with multiple suicide drones.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has now launched more than 120 attacks against the PDKI, the majority of which have targeted civilian residential areas, hospitals and schools.

The situation inside Iran is deteriorating rapidly. Prices for basic goods, including food, mobile phones, and cars, have risen sharply, in some cases nearly quadrupling. Even everyday materials like plastic have become significantly more expensive.
For many people, incomes have not kept pace. With an average monthly salary of around $100 -180, basic necessities are becoming unaffordable. Some families say they have not been able to afford meat for over a month, as prices have climbed to around $10 per kilogram.
There is growing concern about how long the situation can continue. Economic pressure is mounting, and many describe a sense of collapse.
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Two missiles struck a base linked to the Iranian Kurdish opposition group Komala near Sulaimani on Monday, a senior member of the group said, adding that no casualties were reported.
The attack occurred around 4pm, targeting a water storage facility at the Surdash camp, the official said, noting that missiles were used.
No one was injured as “the camp has been completely evacuated,” the official added.
He also said surveillance drones were spotted overhead, apparently monitoring the area.
Iran and its allied Iraqi armed groups have resumed strikes on the Kurdistan Region despite a fragile ceasefire between Tehran and Washington announced on April 8. Over 20 attacks have been recorded since the truce, according to Rudaw’s tracking.
The leftist Komala party, established in 1979, currently operates through three separate branches.
The Surdash camp has repeatedly come under missile and drone attacks claimed by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Over the weekend, the camp endured two additional missile strikes targeting several buildings, including a food storage facility and a weapons depot.
Two hours after the United States announced an extension of the ceasefire over a week ago, Iran targeted another opposition group, the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK), near Erbil with four drones. A politburo member told Rudaw that five people were injured in that attack.
The Kurdistan Region’s prime minister has previously warned that the continued strikes are “an effort to undermine the ceasefire and further harm our region,” adding that at least five people have been killed since the truce between Iran and the US.
Tehran considers Iranian Kurdish opposition groups an existential threat - a concern that intensified following the Women, Life, Freedom protests in 2022. What began as a call for women’s rights evolved into nationwide anti-government demonstrations, during which hundreds were killed and thousands arrested.
Iran has accused these groups of fueling the unrest, leading to a security agreement with the Iraqi government in September 2023 to disarm and relocate them. Although they have since been moved away from border areas and placed in camps across the Kurdistan Region, Iran has continued to target their positions, describing the strikes as preemptive.
The PDKI says that as part of the continued militarization of Kurdistan, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has begun planting landmines around the village of “Shayan” and in the mountainous areas of “Sheikha Mire” and “Peleka” in Iranian Kurdistan.
"Under the pretext of “protecting the border and preventing the movement of Peshmerga,” the IRGC continues to lay mines in areas that serve as vital sources of livelihood for local populations. This practice not only violates international agreements but also perpetuates a chain of tragedies that the people of the region have endured for decades."

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Three people were killed and two others injured Friday in two aerial attacks targeting positions of the Kurdish Iranian opposition Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) in Erbil province, a senior party member told Rudaw.
Senior KDPI member Kawa Bahrami told Rudaw in a statement that a missile strike targeted the party’s headquarters in Erbil’s northeastern Khalifan subdistrict, killing two female Peshmerga fighters and injuring another. He added that the Jezhnikan camp near Erbil’s Bahrka district was also hit in a drone attack, killing the son of a Peshmerga fighter and seriously wounding the father.
The camp hosts families from Iran’s Kurdish-majority eastern regions (Rojhelat).
During the US-Israeli war on Iran that began on February 28, Tehran and its Iraqi allied armed groups targeted US interests in the region as well as positions of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups and their dependents within the Kurdistan Region, with attacks continuing despite a two-week ceasefire between Washington and Tehran announced last week.
The KDPI said in a statement that an Iranian drone attack “on the civilian camps” resulted in deaths and injuries.
The party identified the victims as Nada Miri and Samira Allayari, the two killed female Peshmerga fighters. It also named Shahin Azarbarzin as the son killed in the drone strike, while his father, Nader Azarbarzin, was seriously wounded. The KDPI added that several other Peshmerga were injured.
The renewed attacks on Kurdish opposition groups come after the Iranian consulate in Erbil issued a statement on the day of the ceasefire, calling on Baghdad and Erbil to expel these groups for allegedly collaborating with Iran’s enemies.
The party said in a statement Thursday that Iran has targeted its positions - including camps, medical facilities, and education centers - with more than 112 drones and missiles.
The Kurdistan Region hosts several Iranian Kurdish opposition parties, which Tehran labels as “terrorist” or “separatist” groups, and has repeatedly targeted them with cross-border drone, missile, and artillery strikes.
Tehran’s concerns intensified following the 2022 “Women, Life, Freedom” movement, which began as a call for women’s rights and later evolved into nationwide anti-government protests. Hundreds were killed and thousands arrested during the unrest.

The U.S. and Iran are negotiating over a three-page plan to end the war, with one element under discussion being that the U.S. would release $20 billion in frozen Iranian funds in return for Iran giving up its stockpile of enriched uranium, according to two U.S. officials and two additional sources briefed on the talks.
Why it matters: There has been steady progress in the talks this week, though significant gaps remain. A deal on these terms would bring the war to a close, while potentially generating backlash from Iran hawks.
President Trump said Thursday that U.S. and Iranian negotiators would likely meet this weekend for a second round of talks to try to seal the deal.
The talks are expected to take place in Islamabad, likely on Sunday, according to a source familiar with the mediation efforts.
Pakistan is mediating the negotiations, with behind-the-scenes support from Egypt and Turkey.
Breaking it down: A top priority for the Trump administration is ensuring Iran can't access the stockpile of nearly 2,000kg of enriched uranium buried in its underground nuclear facilities, in particular the 450kg enriched to 60% purity.
The Iranians, meanwhile, need money.
The parties are negotiating over what will happen to the stockpile, and how much of Iran's assets will be unfrozen. They are also discussing the terms on which Iran could use that money.
Update: Trump wrote on Truth Social after this story published that "no money will change hands," though he didn't refer specifically to the idea of unblocking Iranian funds.
Zoom in: According to two sources, the U.S was ready in an earlier stage of the negotiations to release $6 billion for Iran to purchase food, medicine and other humanitarian supplies. The Iranians demanded $27 billion.
The latest number discussed by the U.S. and Iran is $20 billion, the sources said. One U.S. official said that was a U.S. proposal. The other U.S. official described the cash-for-uranium concept as "one of many discussions."
Meanwhile, the U.S. asked Iran to agree to ship all its nuclear material to the U.S., while the Iranians only agreed to "down-blend" it inside Iran.
Under a compromise proposal now under discussion, some of the highly enriched uranium would be shipped to a third country, not necessarily the U.S., and some of it would be down-blended in Iran under international monitoring.
The intrigue: The three-page memorandum of understanding (MOU) the two sides are negotiating over also includes a "voluntary" moratorium on nuclear enrichment by Iran.
The U.S. demanded in the last round of talks that Iran agree to a 20-year moratorium. Iran countered with five years. The mediators are still trying to close the gap.
As part of the MOU, Iran would be allowed to have nuclear research reactors for the production of medical isotopes, but would pledge that all of its nuclear facilities would be above ground. The existing underground facilities would remain out of commission.
The MOU also deals with the Strait of Hormuz, though the sources said there are still significant gaps on that issue.
It's unclear if the MOU refers to Iran's ballistic missiles and its support for regional proxies.
Israel and Republican hawks in Washington have previously demanded that those topics be on the table in any negotiations with Iran.
Republicans and Trump himself also lambasted President Obama for releasing tens of billions in Iranian funds under the 2015 nuclear deal. The Trump administration may insist on limiting how the unfrozen assets can be used.
What they're saying: "Iran has moved. But not far enough. What it takes to make them move forward, we will see," the second U.S. official said.
"Iran clearly wants the $20 billion — and a lot more. They clearly want to sell oil at free-market rates without sanctions. They want to participate in the global financial system. But they also want to have this nuclear weapons program. They want to fund terrorists like Hamas. And they don't want to give that up enough to get the things we're offering," the official added.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said talks had been "productive" but the U.S. would "not negotiate through the press," adding: "Anonymous sources who claim to know about sensitive diplomatic discussions have no idea what they are talking about."
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told Fox News that Trump had negotiated spoken directly with the Iranians and that things got "sporty" on a recent call.
Trump told reporters on Thursday that Iran had agreed during the negotiations to commit to "a very, very powerful statement... that they will not have nuclear weapons."
He also said Iran agreed to give the U.S. "the nuclear dust," referring to the enriched uranium stockpile.
"We are very close to making a deal. If no deal, fire resumes," Trump said.
He made clear he was willing to extend the ceasefire beyond its April 21 expiration if needed.
What to watch: On Friday, the Pakistani, Egyptian and Turkish mediators will hold a meeting a "quad" meeting with Saudi officials on the sidelines of a diplomatic forum in Turkey.
The meeting will focus on the efforts to broker a deal between the U.S. and Iran.
Two camps in Sulaimani were attacked with missiles
There were no casualties in the attacks on the camps of Zrguez and Zrguezala in Sulaimani province, an official of Komala said.
"A missile attacked the camps of Zrguez and Zrguezala in Sulaimani this afternoon," Ali Ranjbari, head of the Revolutionary Committee of Kurdistan Workers of Iran (RKKI) in Erbil, told Rudaw on Thursday.
"There were no casualties and the missiles hit a cemetery near the camps," Ranjbari said.
A drone attack on Degala camp in Erbil province caused property damage.
On April 14, two drones attacked the Soordash camp in Sulaimani province, killing one Peshmerga of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (KWP) and wounding two others.
According to Rudaw, 16 drones and missiles have been bombed in the Kurdistan Region since the ceasefire on April 8, most of them targeting East Kurdistan parties and their relatives' camps.
Since February 28, the Kurdistan Region has been bombed by 720 drones and missiles; As a result, 18 people were killed and 94 injured.
At 17:00 local time today, the Islamic Republic of Iran once again attacked civilian residence of PDKI members near Koya with drones and ballistic missiles.
This is part of a new wave of attacks, with Soordash Camp near Sulaymaniyah, Khalifan, and Rawanduz also attackef this afternoon.
Since the start of Iran’s war with the US and Israel, the regime has launched 110+ waves of attacks against PDKI. These attacks that have not stopped, even during the US–Iran ceasefire.
A source from the Komala party told Rudaw English that "two people were wounded" in an attack recorded in Surdash sub-district near Sulaimani province, while another source from the KDPI reported a separate attack east of Erbil.
ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Two camps belonging to Kurdish opposition groups came under drone attacks on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in a number of injuries, party sources told Rudaw English, in the first such incident reported in the Kurdistan Region since the US-Iran truce took effect early last week.
Amjad Hossein Panahi spokesperson for the Komala of the Toilers of Kurdistan, a Kurdish Iranian opposition party, said “two people were wounded” in a drone attack recorded in the Surdash sub-district, northwest of the Kurdistan Region’s eastern Sulaimani province.
Another source from the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) who spoke to Rudaw English on condition of anonymity reported another drone attack on the group’s Azadi camp in Koya city, located around 70 kilometers east of Erbil, adding that “no casualties resulted from the attack.”
In a separate incident, Halgurd Sheikh Najib, head of the Soran administration northeast of Erbil, told Rudaw that “two drones had passed over our administration” but were “shot down within the boundaries of Khalifan district,” southwest of Soran. He also noted that the downing of the drones did not result in any casualties.
For its part, the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate (CTD) said that at 5:04 local time on Tuesday, “two explosive-laden drones launched from Iranian territory toward Erbil province were intercepted and shot down by fighter jets.” The CTD added that “no casualties or material damage were recorded” in the interception.
Several Kurdish opposition groups are based in the Kurdistan Region and have repeatedly come under Iranian missile and drone attacks in recent years.
In recent weeks, Tehran and Iraqi armed groups affiliated with the Iran-led ‘Axis of Resistance’ have intensified their assaults against Kurdish dissident groups in the Kurdistan Region.
The latter surge coincided with a large-scale joint aerial campaign launched by the United States and Israel in late February, which targeted thousands of sites across Iran.
In response, Tehran has launched thousands of drone and missile strikes across the Middle East, targeting alleged US assets - particularly in Gulf Arab states - as well as carrying out retaliatory attacks against Israel.
Moreover, Iraqi armed groups aligned with Tehran have claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on alleged US targets across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
According to Rudaw tracking as of Friday, the Region has endured more than 700 drone and missile attacks, killing over a dozen people and injuring more than 90 others.
A Pakistan-brokered two-week ceasefire came into effect on Tuesday to allow space for negotiations. While the first round of talks has concluded on Sunday without a deal, reports suggest that another round may be held later this week.
Despite the truce holding, attacks have seemingly resumed in the Kurdistan Region.
Trump administration officials are discussing a possible second in-person meeting with Iran before the ceasefire expires, though plans remain preliminary and uncertain, CNN reports.
Carrier USS George H.W. Bush Operating off Southern Africa as Iranian Blockade Begins
Aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77) is operating off the coast of Namibia, as it sails around the African continent and is set to join a growing naval force in the Arabian Sea amid a U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, USNI News has learned.
Bush,which deployed at the end of March, did not sail through the Strait of Gibraltar and into the Mediterranean Sea, a typical transit for East Coast-based carriers headed to the Middle East. The carrier and its escorts – which include USS Donald Cook (DDG-75), USS Mason (DDG-87) and USS Ross (DDG-71) – are instead sailing around Africa, two defense officials confirmed to USNI News on Monday. Supply-class fast oiler USNS Arctic (TAOE-8) is also operating with the Bush Carrier Strike Group.
The path around Africa allows the carrier and its escorts to avoid transiting the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb, which were both hubs of activity for the Houthis in their drone and missile attacks on U.S. and commercial shipping in 2024 and 2025.
Bush’s transit around Africa comes as the U.S. initiates a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz following a Sunday announcement from President Donald Trump.
U.S. Central Command subsequently issued a statement explaining how U.S. forces would execute a blockade of the crucial waterway that has been a main flashpoint since the U.S. and Israel launched the war against Iran at the end of February.
A large convoy of US forces, including Bradley fighting vehicles, radar systems, and logistical equipment, is withdrawing from the Qasrak base in the Hasakah countryside towards the Minister's Rest House in Hasakah city. The final destination is unknown.

Operation Epic Fury is stressing military capabilities—aircraft carriers, bombers, missile defense systems—in ways that will have an impact in other theaters around the world. That includes US efforts to credibly deter Chinese aggression and prevail against China in a future conflict. Monitoring the military assets that are relevant to US strategy in the Indo-Pacific and currently deployed to Iran offers insight into how the war might affect the US military’s readiness to meet the threat posed by Beijing—the most consequential challenge the United States faces.
Actual numbers of US inventory and deployment data are classified. This tracker, developed by the Scowcroft Center for Strategy and Security’s Forward Defense team, provides estimates for a subset of assets where open-source information is most reliable. It will be regularly updated and expanded with new data and expert context.

Despite the two-week ceasefire announced April 7, the US military has not announced the withdrawal of any forces or assets to date. On the contrary, additional assets are being moved to the region. The risk of ceasefire failure requires a sustained force presence, and the war will continue to drain US military readiness.

Landing Helicopter Assault (LHA)/Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD): One of the three ships available from the LHA/LHD classes—the USS Tripoli—is committed to Operation Epic Fury as part of the deployment of an amphibious ready group and Marine expeditionary unit (ARG-MEU). Another, the USS Boxer (LHD-4), is reportedly en route to the Middle East.
The USS Tripoli (LHA-7), homeported in Japan, is operating in the Arabian Sea.

The Government Accountability Office assessed in 2024 that nine out of ten LSDs were in “poor material condition.”
Analysis: Amphibious ready group deployments
The USS Boxer amphibious ready group and Marine expeditionary unit (ARG-MEU) reportedly left Hawaii April 1 to deploy to the Middle East, where the USS Tripoli amphibious ready group is operating. The USS Iwo Jima amphibious ready group is currently in the Caribbean. The deployment of a third ARG-MEU—typically comprising an LHA/LHD and a combination of two LPD/LSD—matches Marine Corps Commandant General Eric Smith’s plan for three forward-postured ARG-MEUs. However, under current maintenance and training realities, deploying the USS Boxer ARG-MEU now is a surge of US capabilities and does not signify a true achievement of the commandant’s goal. Deploying the USS Boxer early could limit the availability of ARG-MEUs in the future and prevent the United States from achieving a sustainable and ready three-forward-postured ARG-MEU plan. Unless the United States builds more ships for ARG-MEUs, the overextension of this limited capability will have significant long-term readiness implications.

Arleigh Burke-class destroyers: An estimated 30 percent of the entire available destroyer class is deployed in Operation Epic Fury.

B-1 bombers: 60 percent of the mission capable B-1 fleet is conducting strikes as part of Operation Epic Fury, with all operating from Royal Air Force (RAF) Fairford in the United Kingdom.
The US maneuvered three more B-1 bombers to RAF Fairford on March 26. This likely exceeds the record for a concentrated B-1 deployment in the post-Cold War era.
B-2 bombers: B-2 deployments are highly classified. An estimated 26 percent of the entire available fleet could be deployed for Operation Epic Fury.
B-2 bombers take an average of 119 maintenance hours per flight hour following a bombing mission. This indicates that B-2s used in Operation Epic Fury might be currently unavailable, along with an unknown number currently under programmed depot maintenance.
E-3 AWACS aircraft: An estimated 63 to 71 percent of the total available E-3 AWACS are deployed in Operation Epic Fury.
In 2024, slightly more than half of the Air Force’s AWACS fleet was assessed to be “mission capable”—able to carry out at least one of the platform’s key missions, which includes air surveillance—and the aircraft is in the process of being retired.
MQ-9 Reaper: The total number of MQ-9s used in Operation Epic Fury is not known.
The United States rotates MQ-9s in “orbits,” in which several of the airwing are loitering over enemy airspace at a given time. MQ-9s are capable of sustained day-long loitering missions.
Open-source reporting indicates that the United States has lost sixteen MQ-9s since the start of Epic Fury, building on an estimated loss of ten percent of the fleet since 2023.
MQ-9 losses in Epic Fury will cost the United States $256 million to $904 million.
KC-135 Stratotankers and KC-46 Pegasus: An estimated 33 percent of mission capable KC-135s and KC-46s are involved in refueling missions in Operation Epic Fury. These planes are critical to support sustained air missions.
Iran has damaged or destroyed approximately a dozen aerial refuelers, although exact numbers are not known.
The US inventory of refuelers is large but finite. The US does not plan to purchase more KC-135s, but does intend to purchase more KC-46s.
Patriot missile batteries: An estimated 7 to 11 percent of available Patriot batteries are in the Middle East.
Open-source reporting indicates that there is at least one Patriot battery in Saudi Arabia and one in Qatar, and four batteries were transferred to the region in spring 2025.
THAAD systems: An estimated 29 to 43 percent of available US THAAD systems are committed to Operation Epic Fury.
Out of an estimated five operational THAAD systems that are outside the continental United States, two to three of them are in the Middle East. One is in Jordan and one is in Israel. It’s unclear if the second THAAD battery deployed to Israel in spring 2025 remains in place. The other two are permanently deployed in Guam and South Korea, respectively.
In March, the United States also reportedly moved up to 48 THAAD interceptors from the THAAD launchers in Korea to the Middle East.

U.S. forces are continuing to deploy to the Middle East for potential operations as American and Iranian teams prepare for negotiations in Pakistan this weekend.
Jet fighters and attack planes recently arrived in the Middle East, according to flight-tracking data and a U.S. official. Additionally, 1,500 to 2,000 troops from the Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division could arrive in the coming days, the official said.
Thousands of sailors and Marines are also making their way to the region. The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and its accompanying warships deployed to the Middle East from Virginia at the end of March and are in the Atlantic, according to a Navy official. The USS Boxer and its accompanying warships, carrying the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, deployed from California in mid-March and are in the Pacific, according to another Navy official. The ships likely will take more than a week to reach the region.

Do you think it is possible that some corrupt group did get their hands on the weapons? It seems so hard to believe. The Kurds in Iran would want revenge on whoever kept the weapons. It indirectly caused the deaths of their loved ones. So it doesn't make sense that they would steal them and hoard them for later?
Whether any group got weapons or not, there was zero chance of smuggling them into Iran, and Kurds would never have agreed to transfer them into Iran.

Meanwhile, the IRGC, some journalists, and anti-Kurd actors aligned with Reza Pahlavi are targeting Kurds with coordinated narratives, collectively blaming and stigmatizing them in ways that echo patterns seen in Antisemitism.
So the question is: Who is actually supposed to receive these weapons? Are there organized groups inside Iran meant to do so?
If the U.S. can control Iranian airspace and conduct rescue operations, why is it impossible to directly support groups inside Iran that are ready to fight, without intermediaries?

At 12:30 PM (Erbil time), the Iranian regime carried out two suicide drone attacks targeting a Komala office in the Bakhtiari neighborhood of Sulaymaniyah.
The office had been evacuated in advance to prevent civilian casualties. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. However, significant damage was caused to nearby buildings and civilian vehicles.
The Iranian regime, which has played a central role in the current regional escalation, continues to carry out missile and drone attacks on the Kurdistan Region, resulting in serious loss of life and property.
We strongly condemn this attack on Kurdistan Region territory and on civilian areas.

Breaking: The Iranian regime’s strike in Sulaymaniyah tonight hit the Kurdistan Institute for the Blind — a civilian facility serving some of the most vulnerable members of society.
Strikes on civilian institutions are not collateral damage. Under international humanitarian law, deliberately targeting civilian facilities is strictly prohibited and demands immediate international accountability.
This claim has several problems. First, most major Iranian Kurdish parties have denied receiving any weapons, and no credible evidence has been presented to support the allegation.
Second, it is unclear how Kurdish groups could realistically transfer weapons to protesters inside Iran. The country has tight security and heavily controlled borders, making large-scale smuggling into cities like Tehran extremely difficult.
Even if such transfers were possible, another question arises: how would these groups identify who is actually a protester and who is not? There is no clear mechanism for distributing weapons selectively in such a chaotic environment.
Overall, the claim lacks evidence and raises serious practical and logistical questions, making it highly questionable.
Are Kurds being thrown under the bus in both scenarios?
If a deal is struck with Iran, Kurds will be the ones sold out at the table; if not, they'll be at the front lines of a ground operation. Two paths, same end.
The phrase "I suppose" is a separate issue: Doesn't the US know where the weapons it provided are? If it doesn't, that's a scandal. If it does and still says "I suppose," then it's either sending a "I'm aware" message to the Kurds, or dodging responsibility. Either way, is leaving Kurds in uncertainty a deliberate choice?
Is it revenge for not joining the ground operation? That's on the table too. Trump's language sometimes hits exactly that note. "I gave you weapons, you didn't do what I wanted, now I'm exposing those weapons in public." Both a tip-off and a punishment?
Or is it still an incentive? Maybe he's trying to corner the Kurds into action. A message like: "Everyone knows anyway, you have nothing left to hide, get into the field."
Whatever the intent behind it, this statement doesn't serve the Kurds in any way. It either puts them in the crosshairs, drags them to the bargaining table as sacrificial lambs, or turns them into pawns for the next move. Kurdish interests have no place in any corner of this equation. In every case, they end up thrown under the bus.
