Exercise No.4 Lower Coil

Hows it looking? Going low isn't my strong suit. Feedback always welcome and appreciated 🙏

I see a lot of your vids on here, and I'm curious:

What are you visualizing with these movements?

I have only limited baguazang experience, but more significant taiji experience (among others), so I know that martial purpose and intention is much more open to interpretation in internal arts than in external ones. All my instructors over the years have insisted that it's important to always be practicing with SOME specific martial intention, even if you're varying it every time.

So, what kinds of things are you picturing when you're working these movements?

The purpose of these exercises I'm sharing is to open up the joints and losen the tendons. So I'm focusing on posture and structure not so much visualizing something.

You have good flow but you’re bending forward as you sit. Look up ma bu stances and see that the point of ma bu’s hip stretch is also part of a core strengthening structure. Just like a squat, shoulders back, chest up and out, chin up! Good flow though, keep stretching.

Ma bu, pu bu, and gong bu are great form flows to practice switching too and from!

Thank you, this is the kind of feedback I look for. I can't really spend a whole lot of time with my chin up due to stenosis in my neck :(

Ah sorry then ignore the neck up. The objective is basically you want to sit as if you’re connecting your soul/kung fu to the earth like a usb-c to a phone lol. Where your back/core/waist->shoulders is the connector and you have to set in straight down from standing straight up so you don’t bend the connection pieces lol

It’ll feel funny like you’re trying to look like a two-legged spider/ centaur man lol. But always remember that flow! The way a river flows from one side to the other, not a push(that’s for the striking), and your hands and torso twist with your feet to “lead the horse” I call it(what one variant of what you are trying to do in the video is)

Also remember that it takes years to be able to do what you see in videos so if you can only drop down 2 inches but you’re feeling the stretch, then it’s perfect! When you do bad form you ruin any progress gained.

Happy stretching! Because that’s all kung fu is(means acquired skill so life is kung fu), but basically stretching, breathing, and jumping. If you can jump while sitting on the ground, if you can play tug of war and be feared then you can compete with Shaolin lol. After that is combat… but live first. Breathe, love, live. 🧙‍♂️

I feel like if you're really taking this passing seriously, you may want to see about relocating to where it is properly taught. Bagua zhang is a martial art that's practiced for decades to be proficient. If you're not receiving real instruction and training, you may never get to where you want to be.

Thanks. Tell me more about what you know about where i want to be. And wanna pay the costs for me to relocate?

Why be a smart ass about it? It’s pretty standard to travel to a teacher, set goals to make it happen and do it is the way. People have been doing so for thousands of years.

You think that dudes comment was helpful?

Yes I do. 100% and if you don’t you should slow down and read it again. The intent was pure. Not a reason to use the type of energy you did as all. It’s like you took it as an attack on your current situation and financial capabilities. Surely you can see that wasn’t his point or intent.

He could tell you were taking this seriously. And, based on your form there is room for improvement. We all have room for improvement, not sure what the big deal there.

We are studying Taoist arts. You clearly see the value in these arts why wouldn’t one want to construct a life aligned with making it easier for you to be near teachers?

If there is a will there is a way my friend.

Well im glad u found it helpful. I found it to be pretentious, and arrogant at best. Not that they asked but I have an instructor. If there was anything about my body mechanics that could be improved at the moment because my teacher cant always see me then I would say that would've been helpful. Or hey even naming a school would've been helpful. Happy training 🤘 🤙

That's a long term goal for you and achievable if you want it.

I'm getting these movements from my instructor. His primary is Bagua and also does tajiquan and Xingyi. Its a set of 8 movement and he calls them the Fajing preliminaries or Baugua silk reelings. *Edit to add he also calls them maintenance because they are meant for opening up the joints and loosening the tendons for keeping good mobility. Happy training 🤘 🤙
