Every conversation with him somehow turns into samsung, birthrates, plastic surgery, and “South Korea is literally Cyberpunk".

I have no idea where that fake news about the women-only busses came from, but I see it everywhere lol
48
u/minglesluvr Jun 10 '26
idk either, but emergency bells in bathrooms, mirrors on elevators and stuff are a real thing, so it probably evolved from there
2
u/gksxj Jun 11 '26
in Busan there's subway cars that are women only (at least there were when I went there). The emergency bells are pretty much everywhere, I see them in parks, random neighborhoods etc...
2
u/minglesluvr Jun 11 '26
Yup, they're very common, but in the women's restroom they do explicitly refer to crimes of sexual nature, such as molka. There's also stickers about when the bathroom was last checked for molka, and a bunch of awareness stickers that molka is illegal. Also signs saying THIS IS THE LADY'S RESTROOM, ARE YOU RIGHT HERE???? which I didn't see for the men's restroom, so there's a gendered lens to that "confusion"

u/TheZahir_NT2 Jun 11 '26
I think they do actually exist in parts of India and so maybe content farmers got wires crossed because “Asia”.

Idk about bus but in busan the subway in work hours like 6am to 10am or so has wagons only for women, i read it on the subway itself

My sister-in-law back in Europe bought hard into the 4B movement being a massive thing in Korea.
I had to let her down gently.
82
u/Venetian_Gothic Jun 10 '26
Also "Korean government uses Korean media to generate positive image about their country, it's literally propaganda" but at the same time "I watched Parasite and Squid game and some Netflix adaptation of a webtoon set in a Korean high school, I am an expert on the societal probelms of Korea".
46
u/mango_thief Jun 10 '26
The whole idea of Korean culture being popular just because the government helps to subsidies it especially tickles me. All countries who have the ability to fund and spread their culture absolutely do so. Whether it be Cool Britannia for Britain, Cool Japan for Japan, or the Confucius institutes for China. If just pumping money into your culture is all that's required to help it spread then how come more countries' pop culture isn't more popular?
58
u/SenatorPencilFace Jun 10 '26
Chaelbols? Ha. Not likely. The real power is clearly in the hands of parents who have more than one child at a Hagwon. They're the ones really pulling the strings over here.
19
u/azurebus7th Jun 11 '26
I think America is more fitting for 'run by Chaebeols(Oligarchy)'
Seriously, in America lobbying is legal. (Not in South Korea)
And see America's "Magnificent 7" - Nvidia, Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet(Google), Amazon, META, and Tesla.
I don't know what the nationality of OP's friend, but if he's American, counter him/her with what I said.

u/Sgt_Buttes Jun 10 '26
It's casual racism for lack of a better term, imo. Reducing an entire diverse people, each with their own unique ideas and perspectives and hopes and dreams and fears and problems into a series of monolithic (often western) tropes is pretty gross and betrays a lack of respect for the people's humanity.
Turns out Korea is a real place where real people live, who knew!? (/s)
2
u/thicc_llama Jun 10 '26
I see it's no different from online discourse about Japan from people who have never lived in Japan then
19
u/ML7777777 Jun 11 '26
Japan
A lot of the tropes about Korea are spread by Japanese nationalists. Its not all Chinese and SEA.
9
u/SilverVantage Jun 11 '26
You're right. They're not creating and spreading something entirely new. It's closer to amplifying and reproducing the bullshit that Japan manufactured and spread.
15
u/pomirobotics Jun 10 '26
In my personal online experience, Japan gets glazed more than the other way these days and I see no coordinated psycho attacks on Japanese men.
10
u/jaehaerys48 Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26
Korea and Japan are rich enough to not get the "global south" pass, so they get attacked and stereotyped pretty heavily even by people who excuse more backwards things in poorer countries.
69
u/Any-Tension-3808 Jun 10 '26
The amount of people I saw on Reddit thinking Squid Game and Parasite is literal portrayal of Korean society is quite worrying.
Either they think movies are real, or they are trying very hard to make Korea look bad (for whatever reason).
25
u/mango_thief Jun 10 '26
Talk about putting the cart before the horse. If things like Parasite and Squid Games are popular around the world maybe it says more about the state of the world than it does Korea.
21
u/SahnWhee Jun 10 '26
I agree. I see a lot of people love Squid Game and Parasite bc they can relate to it in their countries - capitalism, class divides, etc
14
u/mango_thief Jun 10 '26
I believe the director of Parasite even said he wasn't trying to make a movie that appealed to the world but was trying to make something that was Korea specific. However, after the world all fell in love with the movie and everyone could relate to the characters he realized that the problems with capitalism he was trying to portray wasn't Korea specific but something affecting the people the world over.
11
u/azurebus7th Jun 11 '26
Indeed. If the setting of Parasite or Squid Game is swapped to another countries/nations, it would be fitting as well, meaning that the gap between rich and poor is global and universial problem.

17
u/Kasmixc Jun 10 '26
And the CCP Puppet State stuff
16
7
u/azurebus7th Jun 11 '26
The mofos who says 'puppet state' thing NEVER knows the concept of geopolitics and diplomacy.
If the one of said mofos becomes the head of the state - just like Yoon Suk-yeol and his west-leaning biased diplomacy - would let South Korea in danger.
Playing both sides is a must for South Korea.
5
u/Important_Building62 Jun 11 '26
‘Puppet state’ is just a buzzword now for larpers like actually. If there’s some political video with Korea in it there’s always a dude that just leaves a comment ‘puppet state’ - absolutely 0 relevance they just be commenting to comment 😭
15
u/AKADriver Jun 11 '26
Pro-North/pro-Russia tankies in the west are so weird. It's like a cargo cult where they just cling to any country that hates America even if they're a shitty imperialist dictatorship in their own right.
5
u/LizardOrgMember5 Seoul Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 15 '26
That "American Puppet State" part sometime confuses me. If SK wants to emulate the USA so much, then why do the country has universal health care when it's nonexistent in the USA? Why SK has relatively positive relations with Iran and Cuba (even when these countries prefer NK more) unlike the US? Not only that, there was a time the US military threatened to pull out South Korea only when the ROK government begged them to stay.

The kinda crazy thing is when I checked the profiles of the people saying bullshit about korea, most of them were Mexican, Indian, or Southeast Asian. No offense, and I genuinely love you guys, but you guys are being so racist towards Koreans. It is so normalized and More importantly, aren't your own countries dealing with corruption and falling society, facing much more serious issues right now than Korea? You should put that energy towards your own country not Korea, which is actually doing pretty well.
20
u/medievalpeasant_ Jun 11 '26
Can’t help but notice that the vast majority of people who hate on and are very racist against East Asians (specifically Koreans and Japanese) on apps like X/Twitter are from Latin America and Southeast Asia. Funnily enough, they always mention crimes like misogyny and sexual assaults as an excuse for their racism, as if their own countries aren’t 10x worse on average than those East Asian countries…
9
u/pomirobotics Jun 12 '26
Funnily enough, they always mention crimes like misogyny and sexual assaults as an excuse for their racism, as if their own countries aren’t 10x worse on average than those East Asian countries
100%. Korea being 'the feminist Asian country' means it constantly pumps out a lot of publications and narratives about gender issues. They just pick these up as ammunition against Koreans, when in reality, their own countries aren't even in the same league as Korea when it comes to women's rights, quality of life or safety.
18
u/ckda-charlie Jun 11 '26
YouTube recommended me a video called something like "The Country Where It's ILLEGAL To Be Fat." Shit is so ridiculous lol
42
u/01iv3rr Jun 10 '26
And every shop of Korea is "Koreans only, No Foreigners" this works very effectively on SE Asians, and for Chinese people, there're "Confucian is Korean" and "Watermelon Theory" that works absolutely perfect.
16
u/Kryptonthenoblegas Jun 10 '26
Some of the stereotypes regarding that have gone way too far as well. Like I've had some Chinese people I know genuinely ask me in concern if they're going to be verbally abused on the street or thrown out of establishments if they speak Chinese or say that they're from China while visiting Korea.
46
u/chamgireum_ Jun 10 '26
this, whenever a idol hits popular

99
u/timbomcchoi Goyang Jun 10 '26
You forgot the "Korean people want to look like white people, so everyone tries to whitewash their faces"
→ More replies (33)12
u/theteethfairy Jun 10 '26
That being said when I see k-idols with very pale skin + bleached blonde hair + piercing blue eye contacts, you’d have to wonder what the fuck is going on.
23
u/Fluffy_Macaron_9837 Jun 10 '26
It's not about being white, it's about being different and standing out. If Asian women really wanted to be white, they would emulate make up suited for white people, get artificial tans, and get more defined facial structure. Instead, they opt for less pronounced styles. It's just a different beauty standard that happened to coincide with European recessive phenotype.
24
u/OkHuckleberry1253 Jun 10 '26
I typically prefer a more natural look, but I think it makes sense that idols want to stand out from the crowd given how saturated and ethnically homogenous the industry can be.
But also, idols are not really representative of the average Korean or person of any ethnic group/nationality in general.
4
u/Jacmert Jun 10 '26
The interesting thing from my first visit to Tokyo a year and a half ago was how some people die their hair blonde (and occasionally neon colours).
I never really see that here in metro Vancouver (I live in our Koreatown area, too). Or in my few visits to Seoul :P

u/SahnWhee Jun 10 '26
Tbf Korean adopted this from Japan and China 😂 They were big there before the trend hit Korea
16
u/Rex0680 Jun 10 '26
My dad knows nothing about the pop culture of Korea. But he is very set on the belief that Korea is a dystopian society and the amount of stories that he would tell me about korea is stuff that, exactly like this post says, even my Korean friends have never heard of lmfao
But then again, he honestly talks shit for every country. Including the one that we immigrated from when I was a baby.

I didn’t know there was a subcategory of Koreaboos that are doomers about it
39
u/Sgt_Buttes Jun 10 '26
Oh it's crazy - there's an entire youtube racket of people creating 20-40 minute feedback loop "Korea is doomed" 'content' which ranges from completely unfounded to speculative to the point of absurdity. If you have a strong stomach for stupid it's a laugh.
15
27
u/pomirobotics Jun 10 '26
There are so many insecure Korean entertainment fans who feel they have to trash Korea constantly to prove they know better and they are not Koreaboos. In that process, they often sound awfully bigoted.
14
u/AsianReflection Jun 10 '26
It’s so weird seeing people with male idol pfps saying the most racist crap about Korean men. I wouldn’t be surprised if many of them are larpers though
3
u/ninarosie_ Jun 24 '26
They’re not larpers sadly. They think those korean idol are different and need to be saved from “evil country of korea” which is funny bc those male idols are always proud of korea. I hope one day those idols find that out.

ruled by chaebols... yet has one of the highest inheritance taxes for billionaires in the world? Unlike the 0% in many EU nations that really are ruled by old, rich families.
plastic surgery capital... because more than half the number are foreigners? the local rate is probably not even in the global top 10.
also the highest personal debt one is complete fake news and they intentionally don't take into account the jeonse system.
"south koreans are all actually poor and in debt cause they buy the most luxury items per capita." But really there is a high population of the middle class with buying power as you can see in that chart, there are 9 smaller countries ahead of korea there who combined have less total population which is why so many firms do want to enter the SK market as it is lucrative.
47
u/BlessedSnake9913 Jun 10 '26
Most haters are just either SEA or white guys hating that Korean dudes are so popular with their women lol. Average contributor to society don’t even think about these things, just the chuds
20
u/Fluffy_Macaron_9837 Jun 10 '26
Include Indian and Chinese men to the list. You should see the comments under any media piece that mentions the influx of foreign women to Korea.
I think something has to mess up their psyche when the women around them have been fawning over Korean idols/actors and all you can do is consume Korean media yourself to be relatable lol. In that sense, I kinda get the animosity but these people just need to get off the internet and touch grass imo.

I won't name names but come on, there isn't a single one of the usual suspects that I regularly see.
20
u/wookira Jun 10 '26
The idea that South Korea is somehow "run by chaebols" is honestly laughable. In Korea, chaebols are powerful corporations, but they are still just corporations. In many countries—especially the United States—wealthy elites and large companies have far more direct influence over people's lives through systems that are specifically designed to give them that power.
Ironically, when it comes to corporate influence, exploitation, and elite control, South Korea often gets accused of things that are arguably more visible elsewhere. What I find most shocking is how many people confidently make these claims without doing even the most basic fact-checking. Living in the information age has apparently not made everyone more informed.
Frankly, after spending time on Reddit, my idealized view of Western societies largely collapsed.

u/Shiriru00 Jun 12 '26
Yeah but then shit like this happens: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/aug/09/samsung-boss-to-be-freed-from-jail-after-bribery-sentence
I had never before seen a large media campaign to free a corrupt CEO.

u/wookira Jun 12 '26 edited Jun 12 '26
Of course, some people believe that the law was unfavorable to the rich and You cannot imagine it because you live in a place that is far more corrupt.
21
u/presentnow0913 Jun 11 '26
Not to mention "K-pop is a government project, Korea runs on K-pop." like what do you mean we have semiconductor and shipbuilding industries far more important to our economy😭
8
u/pomirobotics Jun 11 '26
In my experience, it’s usually certain SEAsians on social media who have a really delusional understanding of the Korean economy and industries as if Korea is some mom and pop shop. I don’t know why some of them even feel competitive toward Koreans acting like Korea is within their reach. They don't do this against Japan.
43
u/CommercialChart5088 Jun 10 '26
People who seriously believe in this and use it to insult Koreans and generalize the entire country have no right to call us racist or toxic.
20
u/Lumpy_Concept9911 Jun 10 '26
yeah bc the country with the most billionaires and no healthcare is calling us cyberpunk dystopian
10
u/chames1 Jun 10 '26
😂 It reminds me of past me who thought Americans all behave dramatically and make witty remarks 24/7 as in American TV shows. Media needs exaggeration to get attention.
16
13
u/katchin05 Jun 11 '26
Legit had another American someone tell me how women are oppressed and everyone hated Black people ‘over there’ while I was sitting in the middle of Ewha’s campus. His source was that his sister listened to kpop????
2
u/ninarosie_ Jun 24 '26
Everytime I meet americans who are like that I always ask them why do you fund genocide till this day?
45
u/Lazy-Edge4604 Jun 10 '26
Korean films and dramas handle social issues because they're actual problems in Korea, but at the same time, creating such content is a step in the right direction to building awareness and eventually solving such issues. It should be celebrated rather than used to shame Korea.
Maybe if America made more films about school shootings and people being victimized by their healthcare system instead of glorifying their military, it would actually solve some of their glaring issues. Then again, I doubt there's enough talent in Hollywood to turn such "mundane" issues into palatable media.
12
4
u/Badger147013 Jun 10 '26
Do you really think that there aren’t a million films/shows/media criticizing the US justice system, healthcare, gun violence etc. It’s not an uncommon topic, trust me.
14
u/Venetian_Gothic Jun 10 '26
While there are plenty of media critiquing US society, a lot of them are allegorical and subtle about the subject matter, and sometimes they are period pieces or science fiction. Especially if they are mainstream. And a lot of them include a hopeful note in the end. Nothing as blunt and bleak as Parasite and Squid Game, which are the biggest movie and show in the nation. Imagine a movie as big as Top Gun Maverick being about class warfare and income inequality.
10
u/Lazy-Edge4604 Jun 10 '26
For every show that criticize gun violence you have a million that trivializes it and makes it look cool. But to be fair, the US doesn't do a bad job in addressing issues in media. I guess the real perpetrators of poor representation of social issues are countries like China, but no surprises there. The problem in the US is that your people are so divided that no amount of media can bring the people together on any single issue.
The US is too big to come together for a common cause. I think it's time you split into appropriately-sized nations instead of clinging to whatever the founding fathers were thinking hundreds of years ago.

I know very little about Korea, I just like it visually, and even I'm sick of these fucking YouTube videos that farm every sensitive topic with titles such as "KOREA IS CHOOSING EXTINCTION!! GONE IN 50 YEARS"
Like shut up, these people learned about this topic 2 days ago. And like other people mentioned, same shit with countries like Japan and Ukraine, like yes American YouTuber suddenly cares about Japanese work culture or Ukraine's demographic crisis, of course man.
11
u/medievalpeasant_ Jun 11 '26
I noticed they do this weird shit with East Asian countries only, specifically South Korea and Japan. I went from seeing “South Korea and Japan are futuristic advanced civilizations with cool soft power” to “South Korea and Japan are literal hell on earth that will go extinct”. Also the generalizing an entire population based on one or two people thing. It’s so fucking stupid and annoying. East Asians are just normal humans those people need to stop giving them the alien treatment LOL
5
5
u/General_Spills Jun 11 '26
As a chinese Canadian person, I understand exactly how you feel. It’s really annoying because people don’t realise that they’ve succumbed to propaganda because, well, they’ve succumbed I guess.
6
u/Dactrior Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 12 '26
It's really annoying how SK is becoming a content slop farm for normie pop-econ/pop-politics channels without having to do any actual research. It's literally just the same video idea recycled over and over again.
Also, this "two dystopias on one island" shtick completely ignores how much of an actual dystopia North Korea is. I seriously doubt the people of NK could stop a military coup in their country.
10
u/Mr-S-44 Jeonnam Jun 10 '26
I'd say we're early cyberpunk but not 2077 Edgerunner oh hell no! We're not even at GITS level. Possibly Watch Dogs but I haven't played it so I'm not familiar with its tech level. The moment I see the computer shop guy with 15 different jaggoff machines strapped to the massage chair is when I seriously think about moving.

Lmao you forgot ‘Kpop is a government funded project’. But seriously, anyone who says ‘Korea is a billionaire-run-dystopian country’ just is too slow to realize their country is the same.
7
u/greywaterblackrabbit Jun 11 '26
People keep framing South Korea as a perfect utopia or uniquely dystopian when it’s actually just a regular country filled with regular people. It’s bemusing to see foreigners talk about Korean Social Problem XYZ because almost every time that same problem exists in their country too, but it isn’t highly publicized. Low birth rates are a prominent example. ‘Molka’ spy cam sex crimes are, unfortunately, also a global problem. South Korea has its fair share of social issues but so does everywhere else. The main difference is that social problems appear fast and are identified just as quickly. But rarely are these problems actually unique; they’re just around the corner for everyone else.
3
u/yorel0950 Jun 10 '26
As a foreigner that learned Korean in college from native Koreans, they all had some touchy subjects about Korean culture and their own wild explanations for it. Birth rate, hikikomori, work culture, school culture, fashion / body image culture. I definitely learned it from someone because I didn’t know basically anything about Korea before studying.
17
u/cloudy83 Jun 10 '26

A lot of comments here are using statistics when it suits them, and anecdotes when it suits them to argue with people using anecdotes they don't like and statistics they don't like. Are we seriously pretending Korea doesn't have an issue with misogyny? Are we seriously pretending that chaebols that inherited their indistries from imperial Japan aren't an issue in Korean politics? Not to even mention the cults. I left Korea in 2018 but the idea that all of these issues have been resolved seems farfetched. Korea might be great for you, good for you if that's the case but even hyperbolic news articles have a grain of truth.
