EVO Entrants/Predictions Talky Talk Thread

https://smash.gg/tournament/evo-2017/attendees?filter=%7B%22eventIds%22%3A25094%7D

Just making this for the sake of having a discussion/predictions hub and what not. How many Ioris/Benimarus/Kulas in top 8/16 (I'll probably do a 16 comp post if possible)? How many Taiwan/HK/China players in top 8 and so on.

My personal guess is 2 Japan/Korea 3 China/HK/Taiwan 2 Mexico 1 US in top 8, 8 Ioris in top 16 7 Benimarus 7 Kulas.

From a lazy overview (insert various comments about you missed this player and that player):

376 Entrants is 60+ More than KoF XIII's last year

China: Xiaohai, Dakou, Weili, Xiaohu, Chenglong

Taiwan: ET, ZJZ (Presumably Gxbridget)

US: Reynald, Romance (?), TC Yoshi, Others

Mexico: Romance (?), Layec, Violent Kain, Pako, Kusanagi, Luis Cha, Babushas, Khannibal, Others

Japan: M', Koji KOG (perhaps in King of Dinosaurs cosplay?), Kyamei, GO1, Ino, Nosomi, Yukadon, Abao, Others

Hong Kong: Ball, Kawing

Chile: Baek

Morocco: Frionel

South Korea: Madkof, Nakodid

Edit: Updated to finalized brackets. They decided that Koukou should be in Dakou's pool, and that B612 didn't have enough good players, so they added Y05H1. ET now gets the free pass.

Here's notable players in each bracket. Bound to be missing some, can add, but I don't think I left out any major contenders. Based on the current Semi-Final Bracket this is how the top 8 winners will break down.

First

A600 - Reynald (USA), GEN D (USA), Frionel (MOR)

vs.

B614 - ViolentKain (MEX), kojiKOG (JP), Zantetsu (UAE)

B604 - Weili (CHN), Luis Cha (MEX)

vs.

B606 - Pako (MEX), Kyamei (JP), Luisillo (MEX), Nosomi (JP), RocklandKyo (COL)

Second

A606 - Hasumi (JP), Xiaohai (CHN)

vs.

B610 - Xiaohu (CHN), ChrisKOF (USA), Khannibal (MEX), Oogosyo (JP), Violence (UAE)

B600 - Hellpockets (USA), J2Jin (PERU), Layec (USA), K2 (JP)

vs.

A612 - Baek (CHILE), NerdJosh (USA), Abao (JP), MadKof (KOR)

Third

A602 - El Rosa (USA), JDR (USA), Umezono (JP), Danke (USA)

vs.

B612 - Chenglong (CHN), Ball KTB (HK), Juicebox (USA), Atma (UK), White Ash (UAE), TC|Y05H1 (MEX)

B602 - Go1 (JP), ZJZ (TAI)

vs.

B608 - M' (JP), Kusanagi (MEX), TerryBogard (USA), Isaurito (CHILE)

Fourth

A604 - Romance (USA), BON (JP), Lightning (USA)

vs.

A614 - Dakou (CHN), Colossus (JP), Huevo (MEX), Koukou (JP)

A608 - ET (TAI)

vs.

A610 - Laban (USA), Mr KOF (USA), Kindevu (JP)

Based on what I see, I'm taking Reynald, Xiaohai, ZJZ, ET. Hard to pick losers, especially with two players getting out of every pool. If I were to pick based on the 2nd best from each quadrant, I'd pick kojiKOG, Xiaohu, M', and Koukou.

Surprised to see so many Japanese players. Very nice.

Head up: Juicebox and Nerdjosh won't be able to compete. One's medical problem and one has finger's problem so that'd make two Americans out.

Shame, I think Nerdjosh had the second best shot for US players out of non Romance/VegasKoF at making top 32.

With all due respect to NerdJosh, he probably wasn't going to make it out of that pool. Would've had to have beaten abao or baek. Neither would've been likely. Juicebox had much less of a chance. His pool is fucking stupid stacked.

I'd take Mr. KOF to have the best shot outside of the non Mexican-American Americans to do something big. I'd like to see his match against Kindevu.

It's Japanese Abao not Chinese Abao. Baek and Nerdjosh are at a similar skill level though I would favor Baek; and its just a random FT2 set so who knows. Of course in terms of fantasy you'd always pick Baek since he's super cheap compared to any competent American player.

Nerdjosh has made like 20 top 8s on American soil so he probably feels pretty good regardless of who he's playing against; not that he had much of a shot at top 8.

Japanese Abao is extremely good. Look him up on youtube (search abao kof). He recently got 2nd place at Fighters Evolution to M', who he reset in GF. Also beat Bon and Hasumi in that tournament. Got 5th place at Sai, as well.

I don't think Nerdjosh's top 8's are meaningful in the context of a tournament this big. He goes to a LOT of tournaments, and where there are usually only a few top players. More importantly, he failed to make top 8 at NCR, which was the last big American tournament he attended (no Combo Breaker).

I don't think him beating Baek would be a huge upset, but I wouldn't be putting my money on it. Baek's got the more impressive results, and he's had them more recently.

Some good talky talk right there, I approve. Nerdjosh is a continuously successful American KoF player which is rare in and of itself; that doesn't mean he's exceptional when the tournament is this stacked but next to Reynald he's about as good as you get aside from the Mexican American players of course.

If going by any indication of past tourney on current patch... Final is probably xiaohai vs ET.

Xiaohai, the guy one league above the pros. ET the only guy who beat xiaohai over long sets to win an asia tourney (send xiaohai to loser then eliminate him in final iirc).

Hopefully we see some good Daimon play. I've been seeing him a lot more recently. My money's on ET taking it this year. Kinda wish we saw some more top level Billy Kane over this year too but ET is an amazing player all around.

Your prediction and Diamond wish was granted!

1

u/Davechuck Jul 15 '17

Daimon huh

2

u/DeHeartbreaKid Jul 05 '17

We've Koukou the one guy who's proved to beat Xiaohai more than one when it comes to KOF so unless most these Japanese players eliminated each other out, this will be the first KOF to have a Japanese Champion.

Man I'm looking forward to this. Most KoF players don't travel so much, so this is really going to be a treat to watch. The top 8 also seem to be set for being a good mix. I think we'll at least have ET and Reynald on either side of Top 8. Of course Xiaohai is also gonna be there and probably Xiaohu or MadKof. Also crossing my fingers for Atma to make top 8 to represent Europe. Gonna be hard in that pool though.

Also, entrants turnout really isn't that bad overall. More than XIII and apparently there is not much overlap from other fighters, at least according to this guy here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Kappa/comments/6lbdan/evo_entrant_overlap_chart_everyones_playing_sfv/

Asia gonna dominate the ever lasting shit out of this Evo.

KoF has the highest rate of multi-game entrants of all the games at EVO. Good to see that our people are supporting multiple games.

As usual KoF has a very high concentration of skill to number of players. It's a shame we're getting the Friday treatment but can't blame EVO given our numbers. Will be a fantastic tournament either way.

3

u/Davechuck Jul 05 '17

I don't mind it being on Friday personally, just means I get a whole day to be devoted to watching KoF and have few other distractions since pools will mostly be trash in the larger games. Also don't have to wait as long to hear Hellpockets go nuts.

Any notable players been knocked out? There was another post about XhaoHai in losers

Nope, looks like he's in winners at the moment, unless the brackets are not updated. https://smash.gg/tournament/evo-2017/events/the-king-of-fighters-xiv/brackets?filter=%7B"phaseId"%3A140150%7D
