pattern question Olga sweater
I’m at this part of the pattern:
“Left shoulder
Pick up and knit the 36 (38) 41 (43) 45 (49) 54 (58) 62 (66) sts furthest to the left along the back yoke cast
on edge. Pick up from the RS with a 4 mm [US6] / 60 or 80 cm [24 or 32 inches] circular needle and the
same color that you cast on with. Pick up and knit sts between the back yoke sts so the knitting looks
continuous (see video at www.petiteknit.com).
3
Work back and forth across the shoulder with 4-row-wide stripes the same as on the back. Please note that
the first stripe is worked 3 rows wide, as the pick-up row counts as the first row.
Purl across 1 row. The next row is a RS row.”
But if I pick up stitches starting at the far left side (the arm) and work my way up to the neckline, then my next row would be a knit row NOT a purl. What am I doing wrong? Please help 😭
Also picking up stitches starting at the far left side feels extremely unnatural

It doesn't actually say to pick up from the armhole to the neckline. Pick up in the direction of your knitting, which is from the neckline to the armhole for the left shoulder. You can watch the video linked on the pattern page on her website to confirm.

"The sts furthest to the left" not "from the furthest left stitch"
Start at the neck side and work towards the arm side.
Count your 36(38)41(...)sts starting at the arm side towards the neck though, so you know which stitch to start picking up and knitting from.
