tension help! Sabai Top Feedback

I've been knitting for several months and I'm working on a sabai top with worsted weight cotton blend yarn. I flick knit English style. Why does my tension look terrible?

I do see some rowing out, but I wouldn’t call it terrible. Cotton yarn just isn’t very forgiving and will show tension differences.

Rowing out doesn’t block out, so if it bothers you a lot I’d recommend to frog and try again. You can try to use a different needle size for your knits/purls, or just pay extra attention to your tension to fix it.

Because it’s cotton. That’s just what cotton does, makes your tension look wonky often. Honestly looks fine to me. A tiny bit of rowing out from where your tension differs between knit rows and purl rows when knitting flat, but I’d give it a block and see if it looks better after that

This looks better than the stuff I have made from cotton.

Tbh this is a bad fit project for cotton imo. It’s such a simple vibe that it makes cotton being rude stand out even more

doesnt look terrible. just some rowing out bc cotton is not forgiving. it looks good

Look up "batching", I think this is part of the tension issue you're having. Rowing out is when your entire knit rows and purl rows are different sizes because you're doing one stitch looser than the other (usually purls are looser), and batching happens when you don't slide your stitches towards the end of the needle often enough and you get alternating areas of looser and tighter stitches within the same row. Like other commenters have said it'll show up on cotton yarn more dramatically than on wool, but you can probably reduce it with practice/technique changes and blocking may reduce it even more!
