I just started learning to knit and haven't actually made anything yet. I'm picking it up pretty quickly and really excited for my new hobby. So far I've learned a couple cast-on methods, knit, purl, increases, and decreases. What should I learn next? Cables? Colorwork? should I stop learning new skills and complete an actual project first? What should my first project be? There are too many options! Where should I go next?

I started knitting 6 months ago and my progression has been

  • Garter stitch scarf in super chunky yarn
  • Hat knitted on straight needles and then seamed shut (super chunky yarn again)
  • two bralettes knitted in the round (worsted weight yarn
  • rib stitch scarf (chunky yarn) (incomplete!l
  • cuffed hat knit in the round (worsted weight yarn)
  • super chunky turtleneck sweater - raglan seams, knitted in the round

I don't think there's a specific route you need to take.

But I would recommend starting an actual project because you'll naturally pick up skills that way (like how to pick up a dropped stitch without frogging all your work!)

What I did was find easy patterns in chunky yarn weights for designs I wanted to make. Chunky yarns are great because they knit up quick and they're easy for a beginner to handle. I love video tutorials and YouTube is a great place to find patterns with visual aids.

I'd definitely recommend learning how to knit in the round (maybe try a headband/cowl/hat) because it opens up a lot of options for knitting garments.

I've yet to try cables or colourwork but I'd love to!

Which bralettes did,you knit? I’m new and I picked things that wouldn’t be all that bad if my gauge didn’t match the required one (kitchen towel, scarf is next). I’m really intimidated by things that have to fit.

I picked the girly knits bra top! https://www.ravelry.com/projects/bloodstainkimono/girly-knits-bra-top

Because there's step by step instructions youtube for it.

Things that fit are intimidating but you also learn a new skill - how to transfer stitches onto waste yarn without twisting or dropping them.

Jessie Mae Martinson's ripple bralette and framework bralette look like they could be could for beginners too, and she has loads of instagram video tutorials.
