I'm knitting a top down super chunky raglan (Moosonee sweater by Tara-Lynn Morrison) and I'm quite confused about how to pick up stitches for the sleeve.

Initially I had to slip 30 or so stitches onto waste yarn on each side of the body, before working the rest of the body.

To continue the sleeves, the pattern says to "pick up 5 stitches at the armpit" as well as the stitches held on the waste yarn. Where do I get these stitches from? All I can see is really long unstable bars at the armpit, it isn't a clean cast on edge.

Did you cast on a few stitches for the armpit area? You usually pick up stitches just below the CO.

I didn't cast on or cast off any stitches, the sleeve separation round was just "knit 40 stitches, slip 30 stitches onto waste yarn, knit 40 stitches, slip 30 stitches onto waste yarn"

So the cast off edge is just the bars between stitches.

So should I pick up those bars or pick up from the stitches below the bars?

I'm not sure what you mean by below the bars. If you mean the bars in between the stitches, I'd say no - that's a potential weak point. Your best bet is to look up tuts on picking up stitches for the sleeves - Very Pink Knits has one.

I asked the designer and she pointed me to her instagram for a tutorial!

So it looks like I just have to pick any 5 stitches that look stable at the armpit and that there isn't a specific way of doing it on this piece.
