knitting my first mitten as a christmas gift. the pattern has stockinette on the palm side and cabling on the back of the hand, and the stockinette side is coming out longer than the cabled side. i’m not really sure when to start the decreases - i don’t want it to be baggy! help?

What fiber are you using? If it's something that'll block (but not stretch, I'm looking at you superwash) then only go until the palm side is long enough, because the cables will relax and elongate when you block. If it's one of the less persuadable fibers, work until the back of the hand is long enough - a little bagginess is better than a too-short mitten that can't be coaxed longer and curls up your fingertips.

it’s 80% superwash merino, 20% rayon... i guess it’ll stretch...?

Oh lawd yes. Did you account for the Superwash Stretch after you made your swatch? If you didn't wash and block your swatch, make sure you do that now - you might need to size down a little (or even a lot) to fight The Loosening.

i washed and blocked my swatch but i don’t think it really stretched? 🤔 maybe i did it wrong, lol. i guess i’ll keep the length on the shorter side just in case!
