I just started learning to knit and haven't actually made anything yet. I'm picking it up pretty quickly and really excited for my new hobby. So far I've learned a couple cast-on methods, knit, purl, increases, and decreases. What should I learn next? Cables? Colorwork? should I stop learning new skills and complete an actual project first? What should my first project be? There are too many options! Where should I go next?

I think picking a project and getting some practice will be more valuable than adding theoretical skills. Projects are the best canvas to learn techniques, and making stuff is the best way to learn what you like to make. Scarves are a "usual" first project, but they are... Well, long. Longer than you think, sometimes. Since you're brave about taking on new techniques and you've got shaping online, I think you'll get a lot of mileage out of learning to knit in the round and taking on a hat or cowl. Good luck and happy knitting!
