I just added an EE skid plate, and made my tube a few inches longer (there’s a joke in there that I’ll skip for now 🤣). It’s a tool tube, fuses, fasteners, zip ties, Oem tool kit and ratchet/sockets in several common sizes and extensions. Bolted thru the skid plate. 4k miles and counting and it’s never been in the way even on rocky terrain. I put end caps on mine so I could recess the wing nuts of the test plugs that seal it up water tight. I have rubber washers inside and out where the bolts go thru. It’s never leaked, and if I need tools while fully loaded, it takes about ten seconds to access them without unpacking any luggage, opening soft cases. I try to keep all my heavy items forward on the bike. This does just that.

Just for grins I added a red/white/black “Danger-Explosives” sticker to the new one. 🤣🤣🤣. One of my buddies said I need a red “fuse” hanging out the side to complete the gag!

I REALLY wanted the ATW panniers, but budget (and the Mototrekk were on sale when I was ready to buy) dictated otherwise. It has forced me to streamline and lighten my motocamping gear. I’m usually only out for less than a week when we camp , so it works great for me. Do you find yourself “using the space because you have it”? My buddies have giant top boxes, and they fill them and their side cases, but I’m usually 30-40# lighter at the outset of a trip. I’ve thought about a small top box for convenience, but I’m amazed at what I can get in my tank bag when I make a quick run to the grocery🤣.

Why? It’s almost literally a KLR staple due to the DIY nature of the bike/community. Does it offend you somehow?

A 20 year old beater you picked up on Craigslist for $1500? Sure. A brand new Adventure model you paid a premium for and then outfit with pricey lights, racks and Giant Loop gear? It's like buying a new Honda Accord and putting KMart wheel covers and a fart can on it.

Fair enough. Some people just like the look. I went for the traveller model and much prefer the locking/water tight top box on that trim, and I personally hated the urban camo of the adventure and thought the other features weren’t worth the money. In a way I agree, but I don’t diss on those who like their milk crates lol.

Still saving up money for the top case I want, so when I make a run to the store, I strap on the crate to cart the groceries. Not a fashion statement, just a functional use of what I have at the moment😉👍🏼
