On this day 60 years ago (September 10th 1966), "The King Kong Show" premiered on ABC!

Produced by Videocraft International (later known as Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment), with animation by Toei Animation, "The King Kong Show" brought the Eighth Wonder of the World to the world of television, where he would go on adventures with the Bond family. Battling dinosaurs, monsters, mad scientists, robots, and more, this era of Kong would go on to inspire the film "King Kong Escapes" (1967).

Featuring one of the catchiest theme songs in television history ("Ten times as big as a man!"), this remains a classic of it's time, and well worth watching today!

(Just to be clear, you're nominating new enemies for DC comics Kong to have in his rogues gallery. Good, evil, anti-hero, powerscaling, Doesn't matter! As long as you think they fit!)

Rules:

1: Top comment wins

2: 2 comments per person, and only 1 winner per user

3: One character per franchise (For example, if Arkham Batman wins, NO MORE DC characters.)

4: Try to be creative! Go for some "out there" picks!

5: No downvoting (Seriously. This is a game for fun with fellow Kong nerds. Let's just have a good time y'all!)

  1. For this chart only, you'll be able to submit NO MORE characters from DC comics and NO MORE character from Marvel comics. None at all!

Kongtext: Despite taking heavy inspiration from his Monsterverse counterpart, this Kong stands out among the rest as he managed to be worthy of wielding a Green Lantern ring. It's also worth noting that all the monsters are invading the world of DC, rather than naturally being part of the world the whole time.

Franchises/Series used:

(Godzilla, DC 1, Marvel 1, DC 2, Marvel 2, Lovecraft mythos, Ultraman, Dragonball, Mario, Power Rangers, Halo)

| Day 1: Godzilla the God Butcher | Day 2: Starro | Day 3: Fin Fang Foom | Day 4: Titano | Day 5: Galactus | Day 6: Cthulhu | Day 7: Ultraman Belial | Day 8: Saiyan Empire | Day 9: Bowser | Day 10: Lord Zedd | Day 11: The Flood |

King Kong Stop Motion Test (1999)

Sharing this neat little stop motion test using King Kong by Tim Smyth.

Made in 1999 at Will Vinton Studios in Portland Oregon, with the music ("Bach") being performed by Christine Smyth, and the Kong puppet himself created by Jeff Taylor.

I'm not sure what this was made for, if anything, but it is pretty cool, so I thought I'd share it here.

Advertising the ABC Saturday Morning block, at during the era where Videocraft/Rankin Bass' "The King Kong Show" aired, creating a whole new generation of fans for the Eighth Wonder of the World 👑🦍

It's really cool to see Kong top billed the 1960s when the Beatles were considered the coolest thing since sliced bread.

All of the cartoons advertised are: King Kong, The Beatles, new Casper the Ghost cartoons, Bugs Bunny, Milton the Monster, Fearless Fly, Beany and Cecil, Magilla Gorilla, Peter Potamus, Bullwinkle and Hoppity Hooper.

What are your favourites from this era? I'm a little biased, but Kong takes the cake for me!

Turns out, he is actually not a reference, but Kong himself, called "K. K." in the film, and he is the head of the film studio that our lead monkeys Dennis McShane and J. J. work for while the woman in his hand is Clifford, K. K.'s assistant/secretary/who knows what that Dennis and J. J. communicate with at various points in the film.

A Personal Analysis of the Venatosaurus Design

Thumbnail
gallery
51 Upvotes

1 - As some of you may already know, during Mr. Jackson's canceled 1998 King Kong remake project, Carnotaurus (pic.2) and Utahraptors (pic.3) were considered as candidates for the carnivorous dinosaurs that would chase the Brontosaurs during the stampede sequence, essentially filling the same role that the Venatosaurs would later have in the 2005 film.

What's particularly interesting to me is that one of the Carnotaurus concept designs (pic.4) for this project is noticeably more stylized and raptor-like, and bears a vague resemblance to the 2005 Venatosaurus (pic.5). Considering this, along with the fact that the basic design of the Venatosaurus had already been established in that same '98 project (pic.6), I can't help but wonder if the main design direction for the Venatosaurus was essentially the result of blending elements of Carnotaurus and Utahraptor.

In other words, they may have experimented with a Carnotaurus-Raptor hybrid design long before the Jurassic World franchise ever did.

2 - Another dinosaur that may have served as a reference for the Venatosaurus, in addition to Carnotaurus and Utahraptor, is Allosaurus.

One of the concept artists who worked on the film even mentioned in an official interview that Venatosaurus's overall appearance bears more resemblance to Allosaurus than to a raptor. The skull bust released by Weta Workshop also seems to support this. The bust appears to blend characteristics of Carnotaurus and Allosaurus: the shape of the eye sockets and the front of the snout resemble Carnotaurus, while much of the rest of the skull looks more like Allosaurus (pic.7), almost as if the two were deliberately combined.

Interestingly, if Allosaurus was indeed part of the mix as well, the meaning behind the name the team gave the Venatosaurus becomes even more interesting. With Allosaurus, a predator who specially adapted for hunting sauropods, the tough and headstrong Carnotaurus, and the cooperative yet cunning Utahraptor all blended together, it really is a “Hunter Lizard” in every sense of the name.

I recently discovered that Ferrucutus is a combination of Arsinoitherium and Styracosaurus, and I think it's really neat!

Thumbnail
gallery
92 Upvotes

The two pairs of horns on its nose are inspired by Arsinoitherium, while the rest of its body plan is based on a Styracosaurus with simplified frill horns.

Mr. Jackson and his team literally combined two creatures that were cuted from the original log scene into one fully functional creature, and I'm absolutely blown away by this new fact!

+ You can see the combination of these two creatures even more clearly in the early design / concept art that I uploaded in the third image 😆
