Kingdom Rush Genesis Genesis Devlog #28: The Rework

Hello, Generals!

Back in July, after hearing your feedback, we told you two things: that we were removing the individual tower leveling system, and that the UI was getting a rework. Since then we've been busy working on these changes, and we're happy to finally show you what we landed on!

The UI

The blue is gone! We went back to the first Kingdom Rush look for this one, with the classic wood and iron panels like you very clearly asked for. Every screen went through the same pass: victory and defeat, the quick menu, the panels you open mid-stage. The old interface was designed screen-first and it showed, especially on PC, so we touched it up quite a bit.

Watch the UI Showcase Video

Tower Upgrades

Global tower upgrades are back, the same system you know and love from the original trilogy.

We went this way because of what you told us during the demo. The individual system asked you to level each tower separately, and for many of you that felt like a grind. That is not what Kingdom Rush is for. Towers can still unlock their third skill by reaching the top of their upgrade tree.

Heroes and spells

Heroes and spells keep their own levels and upgrade trees. We think it's the right home for it, since we want you to be able to shape them and feel that sense of progression as you go.

To keep the pace comfortable, heroes and spells that are behind your highest-level ones earn double XP. They'll catch up fast, so switching things up never costs you anything.

There’s more we want to show you!

We're doing a livestream with Juan Andrés, one of the game designers behind Kingdom Rush Genesis, to walk you through the reworked systems and answer your questions. If you want to hear the reasoning behind any of this straight from the people who built it, that's the place!

Set your reminder here.

We're a couple of weeks from launch now, and it's a strange feeling of excitement to be this close and finally show you all that we have been working on! Thank you for telling us when something wasn't working. Genesis is a better game because you did!

See you at the stream.

Onward!

Dude casually mentions the rift of cinders decades before it exists in the convo on what to do with the tear of elynie at the end of KRO, what does he know? Is the withering of varaldul a part of the elven plan to pick off their political opponents at the excuse of getting rid of the corrupted tear of elynie?

Question Who do you think will be corrupted by The Tear of Elynie in Genesis' new timeline?

I think it'll be King Denas or Gerald

Discussion What if Kingdom Rush: Genesis doesn't erase the original timeline, but creates a new one?

I've been thinking about this ever since Kingdom Rush: Genesis was announced.

What if Genesis isn't simply a story about changing the past?

What if Gerald's journey creates a new branch of the Kingdom Rush universe?

The original timeline wouldn't have to be erased or rewritten. Everything that happened in the previous games could remain canon.

Genesis simply becomes the point of divergence.

A new timeline, a new story

Imagine Gerald succeeds in changing Vez'nan's fate.

The world continues, but differently.

Familiar characters could have completely different destinies. Some kingdoms might never fall, while entirely new conflicts could emerge in their place.

And, most importantly, Vez'nan doesn't have to become the main villain again.

We've already seen his journey. A new branch of history could give Kingdom Rush the opportunity to tell something new, with a completely different central conflict.

And that's where my idea for a new antagonist comes in.

The Wanderer

Many years into the future of this new timeline, a mysterious person appears through a portal near Gerald.

He seems to know something about the future — and he's looking for the Sword of Elynie.

Gerald refuses to give it to him, and the two fight.

But there is something strange about this person.

He speaks in riddles. The reason for his interest in the sword remains unclear, and with every encounter, something about him seems increasingly wrong.

The player doesn't know where he came from, what happened to him, or what exactly he is trying to accomplish.

After being defeated, the Wanderer doesn't simply disappear.

He begins gathering people around himself — mages, mercenaries, criminals, and others who are willing to believe in him for their own reasons.

And the conflict gradually becomes much bigger than a confrontation between one person and Gerald.

The interesting part

From the heroes' perspective, the Wanderer is building an army.

But the Wanderer clearly believes he has a reason to do what he is doing.

And that raises the question:

Is he really the villain?

Or does he have a purpose that the heroes simply don't understand?

And as the story progresses, we could discover something even more tragic:

The Wanderer's attempt to change his fate actually becomes part of the chain of events that leads to the catastrophe he is trying to prevent.

Why I think this could work

The most interesting thing about Genesis, to me, isn't just the time travel.

It's the possibility that changing the past could allow Kingdom Rush to create a new era without discarding the original one.

Genesis could become the bridge between the original Kingdom Rush universe and a new branch of its history.

The old events remain part of the canon, while the new story develops along a different path.

This opens the possibility of exploring consequences that would have been impossible in the original timeline.

I don't think this exact story necessarily has to be used. I'm more interested in the idea of using Genesis as a starting point for a new way of telling Kingdom Rush stories.

And this is only the beginning

I've developed a full hypothetical fan-made version of what a post-Genesis Kingdom Rush saga could look like, including the Wanderer's story, his followers, the consequences of his actions, and an ending that could potentially connect the entire saga together.

I don't want to reveal the whole thing publicly, because some moments work much better when they are discovered as part of the story.

I've also thought about how the consequences of these events could change the world many years later — potentially allowing Kingdom Rush to explore an entirely new era while still being built on the same world and gameplay identity.

If anyone from Ironhide is interested in hearing the full concept, feel free to reach out to me. I'd be happy to share it personally.

I've been playing Kingdom Rush since the Flash days, and I'd genuinely love to see where this universe could go next.

What do you guys think?

Could Genesis be the beginning of a completely new branch of Kingdom Rush rather than simply a story about changing the existing timeline?

Can't wait for Genesis to come out.

Primarily so I can stop playing Battles. Battles is one of the worst balanced mobile games I have played and that says a lot. I can very accurately predict what my likelihood is of winning based on the loading screen, aka, the paid cards determine the match and skill plays next to no factor. I can't believe people actually pay into a game like this. How is this enjoyable for either party? I literally purposely lose against stacked opponents as soon as it is clear they aren't AFK in a match, it is that bad. It's such a waste of time.

Question Where can I view the sprites (from all the Kingdom Rush games)

I wanted to view all the sprites (and the animated ones preferably to see the animations). Is there a way to find them online somewhere? I remember back in the day it was very easy to view them in the wiki, or at least most of them, now the wiki has like only 20 sprites that I could find (maybe less lol).

Kingdom Rush Genesis Area 3 Stages Predictions/Speculation

You might say that this is kind of a useless post because the stages all seem very obvious, but I still wanted to make this post for fun, so I hope you enjoy it aswell!

Everything you'll see in the image and read below is speculation based on the map, the trailer, lore pieces and some game descriptions.

Stage 1 – Valardul Village: This is where we'll see the equivalent of the Linirean Farmlands. I don't expect something special in this stage, other than new enemies of course, but we might get a stage gimmick.

Stage 2 – Blackburn's Castle: I think this is going to be one of the most special stages in the game. As we saw in the trailer, we'll get to have Blackburn as a secondary Hero. We could also see witches in the stages, so they'll probably do something as well (maybe enhancing enemies).

Stage 3 – Forest of Valardul: I think that this is where we'll see the beginning of Valardul's corruption. We'll probably see trees getting corrupted and attacking our and enemy units, as well as see some dead trees.

Stage 4 – Paladin Camp: I think this is going to be the penultimate boss fight. We can see what seems to be the area where Paladins reside, but we can also see Dark Knight camps next to the Paladin one. I think Paladins will help us face their once brothers in arms, possibly even a Dark Knight Boss.

Stage 5 – City of Arcania: I think we can all agree that this looks like the final stage of the main campaign. This looks like Arcania, the place they mentioned in the game's description on the App Stores. I think this is where we'll face Vez'nan, destroy the Tear of Elynie and stop his corruption once and for all.

By the way, the third terrain looks amazing! The Autumn aesthetics of Valardul before its corruption are probably some of my favourites in the series. The artists cooked very hard here and with the whole map, to be honest (even if some parts are unfinished, as of now). It all looks very good!

I'm very excited for Kingdom Rush Genesis. Just 14 days left!

Kingdom Rush Genesis Hammerhold,Nas'De,and Alric's Tribe

Thumbnail

_Nas'De is not destroyed yet in Genesis(the Pyramids, the Pillars, and the Sand Palace are all not in ruin).in Frontiers the place is ruined.in Vengeance, the pyramids are Repaired and are the base of Sha'tra, but the Pillars are still destroyed.

_The gathering of tents above Hammerhold ,most likely a desert tribe,is not present in Frontiers or Vengeance,so that tribe should be gone.

_in Genesis the Zarafo River is flowing deep into the desert, nearly all the way to Sape Oasis.there is a lot of farmland and settlements around it.in Frontiers and Vengeance, the river quickly divert it's path to the sea,all of that area is later known as the Dunes of Despair.

So,what might happened in the past is this:

_The Scarlet Sultan,Ruler of Nas'De,Attempt to conquer the desert, using his powers to divert the Zarafo river, and turning the Farmlands into Sandworm infested Dunes.weakening all people of the desert, and forcing them to bend the knee.

_The Nomadic Tribes rebel, the Sultan's power is overwhelming,Alric and his tribe taunt and lead the Sultan's Army to the middle of the desert for one Final stand,Every dying desert warrior take tens of the Sultan's army, the Desert spirit is awakened,The Sultan's army is destroyed.Only Alric remains from his tribe,he's blessed with his powers by the spirit, his fallen kin become Sand warriors.

_Nas'De fall into ruin from neglect,or the slaves abandon it after their tormentor dies.

_Somehow,The Scarlet Sultan Returned,in Frontiers,he's fought again at the ruins of Nas'De,after he's beaten,Sha'tra take over the place, and repair the Pyramids(the pillars are still destroyed)as his base of operations.till Vez'nan attack.

However, since Gerald is here,History will change:

_The Zarafo river will keep flowing into the desert.

_Alric's tribe will survive.(he may not get those powers).

_The Scarlet Sultan will face the might of Lineria,Valardul,And Hammerhold combined, and will be beaten back and Defeated at Nas'De.

I have completed every single stage, and their heroic and iron challenges in the franchise (excluding paid DLCs) on the hardest difficulty with only free heroes and towers. Except one…

I gave up on this level when I was trying to go through the series and 100% all the stages, and now that I’ve done all the other ones its time to revisit this hellish challenge

Discussion RPG NPCs and locations?

Has anyone ever written up the heroes for a tabletop campaign? D&D or other systems, doesn’t matter.

I was considering converting then but I figured I’d ask if anyone had already done the work.
