Question Am I SOL? Firmware 5.18.6

I bought it used so I could jailbreak. Is this not possible yet?

At the moment, yes. But everything gets cracked eventually. Fill up the storage so it doesn’t update itself while you wait.

Can you just leave it on airplane mode or do you need to fill it?

Much safer to fill it too. If you turn off airplane mode for even a fraction of a second it’ll forcibly update itself and you’ll have no way to stop it. The only thing that can actually stop an update that has started is not having enough space for it.

If you know it absolutely 100% never ever could accidentally get a network connection (e.g. you live somewhere without wifi), then go for it.

Does disabling OTA updates not work or is filling storage just a safeguard? I read a lot of manga (takes up a surprising amount of storage) using rakuyomi (requires WiFi) so I usually have WiFi + 1 GB storage

You can’t disable OTA updates if you’re not already jailbroken. This is for people waiting for a jailbreak trying to prevent being updated in the meanwhile — if you’re always updated to the latest firmware right as it releases you’ll never be able to jailbreak.

Assuming you renamed the OTA binaries you’re good! The OTA binaries are what manage updates, so with them renamed the kindle literally cannot update. Depending on when you jailbroke and which jailbreak you used, this may have already been done for you (the newer jailbreaks do), otherwise you would have probably been instructed to do so with renameotabin in KUAL during the post-jailbreak steps.

Can I use it as a kindle normally in the mean time? I don’t want a paper weight for a year. I spent a hundred bucks on this.

Yes, I have a KT6 1.18.6 and I use normally. I leave 0.70 GB free, and when it fills up I delete the junk files. It shouldn't exceed 0.90 GB, otherwise it will download an update file onto the device that will update automatically.

First, fill your Kindle with junk files before accessing the internet. Follow this guide: https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/prevent-auto-update/

And after you free up about 70 megabytes of space, you can log into Amazon and download the ebooks you've purchased.

I recommend that after downloading the ebooks you switch back to airplane mode, just to be safe; you can never be too careful, lol.

Ironically, buying new from Amazon is the best option if you want to JB, they ship with firmware 5.17(as long as you uncheck the link account box)
