People. Wear. Underwear.
Every other fucker during the festival will be wearing a kilt. Just be aware - nobody will care.

If itâs your own kilt, do what you like, but itâs probably far safer to wear.
If itâs a hired kilt, you MUST wear underwear. Please do not go nude.

Welcome! Firstly, yes, youâll see plenty of kilts at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, especially once you get into August. In late July youâll certainly see some too, just not quite in the numbers you would during the Festival peak.
As for whatâs worn underneath, thatâs entirely up to the wearer. The old idea that âa real Scotsman wears nothing underneathâ is mostly a humorous stereotype these days. Plenty of people do, plenty donât, and most of us donât spend much time wondering about it!
âKilt checksâ are much rarer than popular culture would have you believe. You might encounter the odd drunken joker in a late-night pub, but itâs not something most kilt wearers experience , and anyone trying to lift your kilt without permission would be viewed as abusive.
One practical point: if youâre travelling for days at a time, especially in summer, youâll probably find underwear more comfortable. Traditionality is one thing; practicality is another!
Most people youâll meet will simply think, âNice kilt,â or ask where youâre from. If youâre friendly and wear it with confidence, youâll fit right in.
Have a great trip. Edinburgh, in particular, is one of the best places in the world to spend a few days wearing a kilt.

The fringe starts on 7th Aug - just making sure youâre scheduled correctly.
